United States President Donald Trump is used to getting his own way with Republican lawmakers— but there are signs of dissent as his party nervously eyes the looming midterm elections. From a vote against the Iran war to dissent over his $1.8 billion “anti-weaponisation fund” and costly White House ballroom, the nearly 80-year-old president has faced growing pushback. It comes as Trump faces record-low approval ratings 500 days into his second term, deepening Republican fears that they could lose control of Congress in November’s midterms. Billionaire Trump, the only president in American history to be impeached twice, has himself warned that he could face a third impeachment if that happens. “Republicans are looking at their own polls and discovering that Trump is turning into a drag on their reelection chances,” Larry Sabato, a political scientist at the University of Virginia, told AFP. Trump himself has begun to appear increasingly bored with the political battles, preferring to talk about grand projects closer to his real-estate-developer heart. But Republicans worry that his focus on pet projects — like an Ultimate Fighting Championship bout at the White House on his June 14 birthday —make him look out of touch. ‘Grandstanders!’ The biggest rebuke to Trump came on Thursday when the House of Representatives backed a resolution seeking to halt the increasingly drawn-out US military action against Iran. Trump on Friday lashed out on social media at the “unpatriotic” move and blasted four members of the Republican majority who crossed the floor to vote with rival Democrats as “GRANDSTANDERS!” Since his extraordinary return to power in January 2025, Trump has largely exerted an iron grip over the Republican Party. The party has, in turn, largely subsumed itself to Trump’s wishes and to the goals of his “Make America Great Movement”. There have been blips, particularly over the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, when lawmakers voted to release files related to the late sex offender. But the economic fallout from the Iran war has deepened recent unease among Republicans about defending Trump’s priorities when voters are worried about the cost of living. In the USA Today newspaper, columnist Rex Huppke said that Republicans were “starting to show the faintest signs of embryonic spines”. Some of the most controversial of those priorities were front and centre as the US Senate embarked on a raft of votes on Thursday. One of those was the proposed fund for Trump’s allies who claim they were unfairly targeted by the government, dubbed a “slush fund” by critics and provoking outrage among some Republicans. The Trump administration said the plan was being dropped earlier this week after a judge ruled against it, but Trump himself indicated on Wednesday that he was still keen on it. ‘Defections can matter’ Another controversial issue — a demand for $1bn for security for Trump’s new White House ballroom — was dropped before it could be voted on. Two of Trump’s recent personnel changes have also sparked dissent among Republican ranks. His choice of relatively junior housing official Bill Pulte to be the new US national intelligence chief has led to threats from some lawmakers to scuttle efforts to renew a powerful surveillance program. Trump insisted on Thursday that Pulte’s appointment was a stopgap, although it is one of his favourite tactics to use a temporary nomination to avoid a messy confirmation by the Senate. A bid to nominate his former personal lawyer Todd Blanche as the US attorney general could run into similar trouble. While the cracks may be showing, Trump’s hold over most Republicans remains clear. Trump has thrown his weight around by successfully backing MAGA candidates over Republican incumbents who defied him in several — very expensive — primaries. But that could also eventually work against him, said Sabato. “He defeated or forced into retirement several senators and representatives. In essence, he publicly humiliated them, and so now they aren’t inclined to do Trump any favours,” he said. “Congress is closely divided in both chambers, and a few defections can matter.”

Yet a shocking glimpse of reality intrudes in Somerset House’s gripping journey through his metaverse. In 1945, Escher designed a diploma for students at a temporary academy in Eindhoven, recently liberated from Nazi rule. Behind a wise old owl in the foreground, twisting columns of black smoke rise from a riverside town, their evil sinuousness reflected in the water. The message of this depiction of war is not only that Escher was a civilised individual surviving a brutal age but also that his visual delights were never just fanciful. Even his wildest speculations reveal the workings of the world itself, grounded as they are in what Galileo called “the language of mathematics” in which “the book of nature is written”. You don’t have to be fluent in that language to lose yourself in Escher’s art. You just need to look, and this exhibition lets you look so much more closely and deeply than you can in books and reproductions and imitations of his work. At times you feel you are actually inside his paradoxical places. I chuckled for ages in front of his 1958 lithograph Belvedere in which a king and queen survey a mountainous landscape in different directions from two storeys of a Renaissance building, but wait, they don’t just face different ways, their separate floors are totally at odds, the king’s pointing sideways while the queen faces out of the picture in a 90-degree shift: the columns on the front of the king’s balustrade support the back of the queen’s floor and the whole building turns in two different dimensions inhabiting two truths at once. The son of Parool columnist Yesim Candan was beaten with a chain lock in Amsterdam-Zuid on Tuesday evening.
Dichter, filosoof en schrijver Lieke Marsman is overleden, meldt haar uitgeverij Pluim. Ze is 35 jaar geworden. Marsman publiceerde essays, romans en dichtbundels. Ze was onder meer bekend van de boeken Op een andere planeet kunnen ze me redden en Het tegenovergestelde van een mens. Tussen 2021 en 2023 was Marsman Dichter des Vaderlands. Marsman leed al jaren aan een zeldzame vorm van kraakbeenkanker en was ongeneeslijk ziek. In 2022 meldde ze dat vanwege haar ziekte een arm geamputeerd moest worden. In haar werk behandelde ze vaak thema's als leven en dood, haar ziekte gaf daarop een nieuw perspectief. "Ik had een obsessie met heftige gevoelens", zei ze recent tegen de Volkskrant. "'Het was meer een wiskundige formule; doodsangst als concept. Nu vóél ik het. Ik voel dat de dood eraan komt, maar ik wil het niet." Leven en dood In 2010 debuteerde Marsman met de dichtbundel Wat ik mijzelf graag voorhoud. Ze won daarmee meerdere prijzen, waaronder de C. Buddingh'-prijs. Drie jaar later verscheen haar bundel Ter gelegenheid van poëzie, een ode aan de poëzie en het belang van het nauwkeurig gebruiken van de taal, gericht en oprecht. "Als essayist in de krant en kernachtig op sociale media was ze een maatschappelijk betrokken commentator", schrijft haar uitgeverij. "Met humor en scherpte wist ze altijd tot de kern van complexe vraagstukken door te dringen." In 2025 kreeg ze de Constantijn Huygens-prijs voor haar literaire oeuvre. De jury noemt het werk van Marsman toonaangevend binnen de hedendaagse Nederlandse letteren. "Ze durft met vorm te experimenteren en weet daarbij een groot, vaak opvallend jong publiek aan te spreken." Gifbeker In 2017 werd bij Marsman kraakbeenkanker vastgesteld. Ze schreef het jaar erop een boek over haar behandeling: De volgende scan duurt vijf minuten. Daarin beschreef ze dat, als gevolg van de tumor in haar bovenrug, ze haar rechterarm nog wel kon bewegen, maar niet meer omhoog kon doen. Later maakte ze bekend dat ze vanwege de tumor haar arm en schouder moest laten amputeren. "De gifbeker moest helemaal leeg, de radiotherapie van dit voorjaar haalde helemaal niets uit." Volgende week verschijnt haar boek De Dichter en de duivel. Dat gaat over een dichter die een huis heeft gekocht, en ontdekt dat haar berging toegang biedt tot een ondergrondse wereld, "die wordt bevolkt door influencers, politici, opiniemakers en columnisten en de duivel", aldus uitgeverij Pluim. Het boek is gebaseerd op Dante Alighieri's hel.

De zoon van Parool-columnist Yesim Candan is gisteravond in Amsterdam-Zuid geslagen met een kettingslot. De politie onderzoekt of er een verband is met een column over een incident waarbij de Amsterdamse voetbalclub ASV De Dijk betrokken was. "Ik ben echt ontdaan", zegt de 51-jarige columnist op sociale media. Tegen de NOS zegt ze dat het "naar omstandigheden" goed gaat met haar zoon. Op 15 mei verscheen in Het Parool een column van Candan over een voetbalwedstrijd tussen AFC en De Dijk, waarbij zij aanwezig was. "Op het moment dat de vrouwelijke scheidsrechter een penalty aan AFC toekende, stormde een groep jongens van de tegenpartij collectief op haar af", schrijft zij in haar column. Ze zouden de scheidsrechter daarbij hebben uitgescholden voor "kankerlijer". 'Structureel probleem' Volgens Candan is dit meer dan een losstaand incident. "Dit gaat over iets groters: over respect, opvoeding en de manier waarop jongens leren omgaan met autoriteit en met vrouwen. En ja, het schuurt om dit te benoemen, maar de tegenpartij was een multicultureel team." Candan schrijft dat in sommige voetbaldistricten ruim 70 procent een sterke stijging van agressie ervaart. "Dat is een structureel probleem." Naar aanleiding van de column ontving Het Parool een anonieme dreigbrief. Daarin staat dat de columnist en de krant gewaarschuwd zijn om niet te publiceren. De schrijvers zeggen te weten waar ze de columnist en haar zoon kunnen vinden. Burgemeester spreekt steun uit "In haar column pleit Yesim Candan voor respect en fatsoen", aldus burgemeester Halsema op sociale media. "In plaats daarvan wordt haar zoon mishandeld, mogelijk om de moeder het zwijgen op te leggen." Halsema noemt dat "afschuwelijk en onverteerbaar". Candan en haar zoon verdienen volgens de burgemeester "alle steun en vrijheid". De hoofdredacteur van Het Parool, Michiel Couzy, noemt de aanval "verschrikkelijk". "Als deze aanval verband houdt met haar column, is dit ook een aanval op de persvrijheid. Een columnist moet in alle vrijheid onderwerpen aan de orde kunnen stellen. Wij staan met z'n allen achter Yesim en haar zoon." De politie bevestigt een mishandeling in Amsterdam-Zuid te onderzoeken en roept getuigen op om zich te melden. Verder wil de politie niet veel kwijt over het incident.
