MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government on Friday urged outsiders to avoid travelling to the region and asked current visitors to leave immediately, ahead of a major protest that has prompted the deployment of federal paramilitary troops. The strict travel advisory, effective from June 5 to June 20, comes in response to a strike call for June 9 by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a civil society alliance spearheading a volatile rights movement in the territory. “The measure is advised to save intending visitors from any unexpected situation or inconvenience,” an unnamed official spokesperson said in a press release issued by the region’s Press Information Department (PID). “The government also requests those already in the territory for sightseeing or any other purpose to leave by Friday evening so that they do not confront any unpleasant situation,” the spokesperson added. Zahid Aslam, who owns a guest house in Neelum Valley, told Dawn that the administration had urged him to ask his guests to leave. His guest house was booked till June 16, but guests are now requesting refunds. The JAAC has previously led mass demonstrations over local economic grievances and political rights that turned deadly during clashes with law enforcement in May 2024 and September 2025. The alliance’s latest protest wave centres on a highly contentious demand to abolish the 12 seats in the region’s Legislative Assembly that are reserved for refugees from Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir who settled in mainland Pakistan after 1947. JAAC alleges that these seats are frequently used by mainstream Pakistani political parties to influence the formation of governments in Muzaffarabad. On Thursday, the AJK Legislative Assembly strongly defended the status quo, backing the refugee seats and calling for elections to proceed on schedule. Anxious to prevent a repeat of past bloodshed, Islamabad has dispatched federal paramilitary forces to reinforce the region’s thinly stretched police force. On Thursday, AJK Inspector General of Police Captain (retired) Liaqat Ali Malik formally requested 14,000 additional personnel from the federal government to secure the territory from June 7 to June 21. Video footage circulating on Friday showed convoys of security personnel entering Muzaffarabad, suggesting that reinforcements were already being moved into the region ahead of the planned strike. “Our foremost responsibility is to protect public and private life and property, and the police will act in accordance with their mandate,” Malik told Dawn. “I urge people not to join any mob seeking to create unrest or attack security forces. Anyone with grievances or demands should pursue them through democratic and peaceful means,” he added. A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that the requisitioned force was “well over 14,000”, as two additional requests had been sent to the federal government for supplementary deployments. Meanwhile, speculation mounted on social media that authorities might suspend internet and mobile data services from Friday midnight, as they had during the weeklong JAAC strike in September-October last year. The previous shutdown had severely disrupted academic activities, online businesses and freelance work, while also hampering communication by rendering internet-based calling and messaging services inaccessible across the region. There was, however, no immediate official confirmation of the reports. Separately, the University of AJK on Friday postponed its Spring 2026 term examinations, scheduled to commence on June 8, until further orders in view of the JAAC strike call.

How does a 100-year-old dance company face the 21st century? For Rambert’s Benoit Swan Pouffer the answer is combining innovation with popular adaptations such as the Brummie crime saga On 15 June 1926, the Lyric theatre in Hammersmith played host to “an engaging little ballet” called A Tragedy of Fashion, a “chic trifle” according to the press, that had been first concocted round a west London dinner table. Yet it turned out to be a momentous moment in the course of British dance. The show was produced by Marie Rambert, a Polish émigré who had performed with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, and it was the beginnings of a dance company that’s still going strong 100 years later. Marie Rambert was a force of nature. She has been called “an inspired talent spotter and legendary bully”, with “wit, taste and a sharp instinct for trends”, and with her nascent company (first known as the Marie Rambert Dancers, then Ballet Club, then Ballet Rambert), she kindled the talents of Britain’s most influential choreographers of the age, including Frederick Ashton and Antony Tudor. “This woman was a pioneer,” says the company’s current artistic director, Benoit Swan Pouffer. “She was really ahead of her time.” Nonetheless, fast-forward 100 years and Marie Rambert wouldn’t recognise the company that still bears her name, written in capitals down the side of a sleek building just behind the National Theatre, on London’s South Bank. ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the “Shanghai spirit” and called for a joint strategy among SCO member states to counter terrorism, organised crime, drug trafficking, cybercrime and terror financing. Naqvi said this at a special meeting of the Ministers of Interior and Public Security of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He said the region faced “serious and complex security challenges” that were interconnected, noting that criminal and terrorist networks were rapidly adapting to technological advancements, exploiting artificial intelligence, digital platforms, online networks and cryptocurrency transactions to expand their activities. The interior minister emphasised the importance of modernising institutional coordination and enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms across the region to tackle these threats. Shared threats demanded shared solutions, Naqvi told the delegates, further calling for a comprehensive regional strategy to tackle transnational crime and emerging security risks. Highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the SCO, he said: “Pakistan fully adheres to the principles of the Shanghai Spirit, which is based on mutual trust, equality, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty.” Naqvi further stated that Pakistan had rendered “unparalleled sacrifices” against terrorism and continued to strengthen its security architecture to address evolving threats. Under the National Action Plan, he said, Pakistan had strengthened intelligence coordination, border management and anti-money laundering measures. “These initiatives have significantly strengthened the country’s capacity to combat terrorism and organised crime.” He called for more effective cooperation under SCO’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) for intelligence sharing, joint threat analysis and countering online radicalisation and extremist propaganda. Pakistan, he said, fully supported workshops and expert exchange programmes building collective capabilities. Turning his attention to cybersecurity, he said cyber intelligence and digital forensics cooperation were “the need of the hour” and noted that technological advances had created new opportunities for criminal organisations and terrorist groups. On the issue of narcotics trafficking, he warned that the illegal drug trade remained a major source of terror financing. He called for a coordinated joint strategy against drug trafficking networks, online criminal operations and illicit financial flows facilitated through digital currencies. Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force, he said, remained actively engaged in SCO-led counter-narcotics initiatives and stood ready to deepen cooperation with partner countries. He said border security was key to regional peace and stability and stressed greater cooperation on preventing the use of forged documents for travelling, watch-list coordination and human smuggling. He also said that stopping terror financing was among Pakistan’s key priorities, adding that the country had reformed its anti-money laundering (AML) regime and that the country’s enhanced financial monitoring framework was playing “an active role” in detecting and preventing illicit financial activities. Moreover, strong regional cooperation was indispensable for dismantling terror financing networks, he said, emphasising that no country could effectively confront transnational threats in isolation. “Our challenges are common, so our efforts must also be collective and coordinated,” Naqvi said. “The common goal of our joint efforts is a peaceful and secure SCO region.” Concluding his address, Naqvi said that Pakistan looked forward to welcoming participants at the SCO summit to be held in Islamabad in 2027. A day earlier, Naqvi met his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, on sidelines of the SCO moot and the two discussed bilateral relations and the current regional situation. Both ministers also exchanged views on Pakistan-Iran relations and the latest regional situation.
