The physicist Paul Dirac once proposed that it is more important that a formula is beautiful than that it can be proven: when a perfectly beautiful theory produces results that cannot be real, he argued, then we should not discard the theory but reconsider what is real. Since the 1970s, Terry Winters has been rebuilding that bridge between art and science. Taking inspiration from disciplines including botany – his early paintings, particularly, evoke sprouting pods and tangled roots – engineering, computer modelling and cybernetics, his paintings might be understood as diagrammatic approximations of the patterns that govern everything from the division of cells to the constellation of stars. Launched in 1976, the publication was designed to keep members informed about IEEE and what its constituents were doing, as well as to report on the organization’s initiatives, technical standards, products, and services. That directive expanded over the years to include our reporting on key historical technical achievements recognized as IEEE Milestones and support for young professionals with career-guidance articles and information about educational resources. The Institute has gone through many iterations in the past 50 years. What began as a monthly four-page insert in the print edition of IEEE Spectrum became a separate newspaper published six times a year and mailed along with Spectrum in 1977, and then a monthly publication the following year. Today we publish all of The Institute’s articles online, with a curated selection appearing in our 16-page quarterly printed in the March, June, September, and December Spectrum issues. To provide members with a quick summary of the latest online news, in 2003 a bimonthly newsletter, The Institute Alert, began appearing in your inbox. O cooperativismo tem um papel fundamental na construção de um futuro mais sustentável ao unir desenvolvimento econômico com responsabilidade social e ambiental. Neste 5 de junho, Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente, esse compromisso ganha ainda mais destaque e reforça a importância de iniciativas sustentáveis por meio da cooperação. O acesso à água potável e ao saneamento básico é um dos grandes desafios no Brasil, mesmo sendo um dos países com maior disponibilidade hídrica no mundo. Dados do Sistema Nacional de Informações em Saneamento Básico (Sinisa) mostram que, dos 213 milhões de brasileiros, cerca de 33 milhões não têm acesso à água potável e aproximadamente 90 milhões vivem sem coleta de esgoto. Diante deste cenário, iniciativas como o Cresol Siga, têm cada vez mais relevância. A linha de crédito voltada para saneamento, infraestrutura e gestão da água promove mais qualidade de vida às pessoas, igualdade de oportunidades e reduz os impactos ambientais. Acesso a água potável e saneamento Desde 2022, o projeto da Cresol em parceria com a ONG norte-americana Water.org já liberou mais de 2 mil financiamentos e transformou realidades em diversas partes do Brasil. O objetivo é reduzir barreiras no acesso das pessoas às soluções de água potável e saneamento básico, seja no campo ou na cidade. Através do crédito facilitado com isenção de IOF, é possível financiar itens como poços artesianos, sistema de reaproveitamento de água da chuva, caixa d’água, banheiro, limpeza e renovação da fossa, ligação da rede coletora de esgoto, entre outros. “A Cresol está atenta à realidade e sempre pensando em como contribuir para melhorar a vida das pessoas, seja através das soluções financeiras ou projetos voltados aos desenvolvimento social. Nós queremos gerar impacto positivo nas comunidades. Queremos promover o acesso a direitos básicos, garantir um mundo mais sustentável, com mais oportunidades e inclusão”, explica o presidente da Central Cresol Sicoper, Carlos Cupercini. A iniciativa também está alinhada aos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) 3 e 6 da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), reforçando o compromisso da cooperativa com práticas ambientais, sociais e de governança. Transformando realidades pelo Brasil Ter um banheiro adequado é algo básico quando se trata de dignidade, saúde e bem-estar. Em um lar de idosos no município de Sede Nova (RS), a priprietária Dulce Avozani aproveitou o Cresol Siga para fazer melhorias no banheiro da instituição. O financiamento tornou o local mais acessível, seguro e confortável aos idosos atendidos. O recurso ainda contemplou a implantação de um sistema de reaproveitamento da água, contribuindo para o uso consciente e redução de desperdícios. “O Cresol Siga se encaixou exatamente no que eu precisava, no momento certo. É um sonho realizado e já tenho planos de ampliar, novamente com a parceria da Cresol”, destaca Dulce. No norte do Rio Grande do Sul, a estiagem que causava prejuízos ao agricultor Silvano Baldin, de Iraí (RS), não gera mais a mesma preocupação em relação à produção de verduras. O investimento em uma grande caixa d’água agora garante o cultivo. “A água é a minha sobrevivência. Sem água eu não conseguia manter o meu negócio. Eu procurei a Cresol e fiz o financiamento do Siga para instalar a caixa d’água. Antes do investimento, eu plantava cerca de 400 pés de verduras. Depois, eu passei para 1.500 pés e já penso em ampliar”, conta o agricultor. Água no semiárido nordestino Se a falta de chuva traz transtornos para os produtores gaúchos, o que dizer de quem planta no semiárido nordestino, onde a água é ainda mais escassa? O agricultor pernambucano Rômulo Costa de Almeida conhece bem as dificuldades causadas pela falta de água. Para ele, a estiagem era um grande desafio e sinônimo de perdas na produção de hortaliças. “Aqui no semiárido, cada gota de água é de grande importância. A água é vida tanto para produção quanto para o sustento familiar e para os animais. Ter água é essencial”, diz o agricultor, que viu a vida mudar através do Cresol Siga. Rômulo perfurou um poço na propriedade localizada na cidade de Tabira (PE). A garantia de água trouxe a certeza da produção e do sustento da família. “Hoje, eu consigo produzir sem preocupação com a questão da seca aqui no semiárido. Toda água que eu preciso agora é do poço. Minha produção é 100%, o ano inteiro, graças ao programa da Cresol”, afirma o agricultor. Cresol Siga na COP 30 O Cresol Siga foi apresentado ao público na 30ª Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas (COP 30), realizada em Belém (PA). O projeto foi um dos selecionados pela Organização das Cooperativas Brasileiras (OCB) para representar o cooperativismo brasileiro na conferência, como um exemplo de desenvolvimento das comunidades através de linhas de crédito para investimentos sustentáveis. A importância do Cresol Siga também foi reconhecida em 2024, com 1º lugar no Prêmio ProsperaCoop, categoria meio ambiente. A premiação da Confederação Brasileira das Cooperativas de Crédito (Confebras) valoriza as melhores práticas de sustentabilidade promovidas pelas cooperativas de crédito do Brasil. Relatório de Sustentabilidade Em maio, a Cresol lançou o Relatório de Sustentabilidade 2025, que já está disponível na íntegra em seu site oficial. O documento reúne os principais avanços da instituição nos pilares ambiental, social e de governança e apresenta, de forma transparente, os resultados consolidados ao longo de 2025. Elaborado com base em padrões internacionais como a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), o Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (Sasb) e o International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), o relatório reúne mais de 90 indicadores e evidencia a evolução da estratégia da Cresol na integração da sustentabilidade ao negócio.
