In een bos in het Friese Gaasterland is een vredesmonument onthuld ter herinnering aan de ongeveer 2300 Belgische vluchtelingen die daar in de Eerste Wereldoorlog verbleven. Bij de onthulling gisteren benadrukte de Friese commissaris van de Koning Arno Blok dat de geschiedenis van toen nog altijd actueel is. "De opvang van mensen die moeten vluchten voor oorlog en geweld vraagt ook vandaag om begrip, gastvrijheid en betrokkenheid." Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog sloegen ongeveer 1 miljoen Belgen op de vlucht naar het neutrale Nederland. De vluchtelingen waren vooral Belgische burgers die bang waren voor het oorlogsgeweld en de wreedheden van de Duitse bezetters. Er kwamen ook 35.000 Belgische militairen naar Nederland. Veel van die militairen verbleven in afgesloten vluchtelingenkampen, vooral in de provincies Brabant, Utrecht en op de Veluwe. 2300 militairen werden opgevangen in de bossen bij Gaasterland, verspreid over de streek en gehuisvest in boerderijen, barakken, tenten en bij gezinnen thuis. Impact De komst van de Belgen had grote impact op de omgeving. "Hier waren 6500 inwoners en daar kwamen zoveel vreemdelingen bij. Die hadden andere gewoonten, leefden wat losser. Dat ging niet altijd goed." vertelt Henk Luyckx bij Omrop Fryslân. Luyckx kan het weten, want zijn opa was een van die Belgische vluchtelingen die op 23-jarige leeftijd naar Nederland kwam. Hij werd verliefd op een Friezin en bleef, ook toen zijn landgenoten na de wapenstilstand van 1918 weer teruggingen. Juist omdat hij het verhaal van toen wilde vertellen en herdenken nam kleizoon Luyckx een paar jaar geleden het initiatief voor het monument. "Een vredesduif bij het bestaande vredesmonument in het Rijsterbos vond ik wel een goed idee." Landschap vertelt verhaal Daar dacht de Friese landschapsvereniging It Fryske Gea anders over. Het werd uiteindelijk een grote gedenksteen, midden in het bos. "Natuurlijk erfgoed", aldus Chris Bakker van It Fryske Gea gisteren, bij de onthulling van het monument. "Het landschap vertelt zo niet alleen het verhaal van planten en dieren, maar ook van de mensen die hier leefden, werkten en soms noodgedwongen een toevlucht vonden." "Wat mij aanspreekt, zijn de gelijkenissen met de situatie die we nu kennen", zei de Belgische ambassadeur Koen Adam. "Er zijn veel oorlogen en heel veel mensen die daaronder lijden. Die zoeken toevlucht in andere landen." Wat de ambassadeur betreft vertelt het nieuwe vredesmonument het verhaal van toen door. "Het belangrijkste is dat de boodschap wordt overgedragen aan de volgende generaties", aldus Adam. "Het is onze plicht als volwassenen om die over te brengen en te laten zien hoe wij om zijn gegaan in vergelijkbare situaties." Verharding Henk Luyckx beaamt dat. "We moeten het ook doortrekken naar de hedendaagse verharding in de maatschappij.", zegt hij. "Als de Belgische militairen niet zo ruimhartig opgevangen waren in Gaasterland, had ik hier nu niet gestaan." 1 miljoen Belgische vluchtelingen Ongeveer een op de zeven Belgen vluchtte in de Eerste Wereldoorlog naar Nederland. Dat waren vooral vrouwen, kinderen en ouderen die te voet de grens naar Zeeland overstaken. Na de val van Antwerpen op 10 oktober 1914 sloegen ook Belgische militairen op de vlucht. Er werden op tal van plekken speciale (tenten)kampen ingericht voor de opvang, maar ze werden soms ook bij particulieren ondergebracht. Op de hei bij Ede werd een 'vluchtoord' van barakken opgebouwd met 4100 plekken. In 1916 kwamen Belgische militairen die werden opgevangen in Nederland zelf met het idee om een monument te bouwen, om hun dankbaarheid te tonen aan Nederland. Daarna begonnen ze met de bouw van het Belgenmonument in Amersfoort. Dat werd een aantal jaren later onthuld.
