New graduates’ careers are unfolding in an era when AI is not optional. The most successful engineers treat artificial intelligence as leverage, not competition. Here are seven tips to help keep young professionals in demand no matter how quickly the field’s tools evolve. 1. Master the fundamentals first. AI tools can help you code, but you still need strong fundamentals in: Data structures and algorithms for problem-solving. Operating systems, databases, and networking for system-level understanding. Core programming languages such as C++, Java, and Python. AI can autocomplete syntax, but if you don’t understand how things work under the hood, you’re likely to struggle to debug or optimize. 2. Learn how to work with AI, not against it. The best engineers will not try to out-code AI. Instead, they will learn to: Write clear prompts to generate better code snippets. Review and debug AI-generated code for accuracy, performance, and security. Use AI for productivity boosts while still exercising judgment. Think of AI as a teammate. The real skill is knowing when to trust it and when not to. 3. Build projects that showcase end-to-end thinking. Employers increasingly look for engineers who can design and build systems, not just solve problems. Create projects that show you can: Define requirements clearly. Use AI tools responsibly within the workflow. Deliver a product that scales and is maintainable. 4. Sharpen your system design skills early. Even junior engineers are now asked questions about basic system design with AI. Expect to explain to prospective employers: How you would responsibly integrate AI into a system. How to design fallbacks when AI fails. How to ensure scalability and reliability. 5. Develop strong communication skills. Today’s engineers don’t just code in isolation. You will be expected to: Explain design choices to teammates and stakeholders. Document decisions clearly. Collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams. This is one area where AI cannot replace you. Clear communication is a career accelerant. 6. Stay curious and keep learning. The tech industry moves fast, and AI is accelerating that pace. Cultivate habits such as: Following industry news, blogs, and open-source projects. Experimenting with new AI tools, frameworks, and libraries. Engaging in communities such as GitHub, IEEE Collabratec, LinkedIn, and Medium. Employers value engineers who keep themselves sharp and relevant. 7. Think beyond coding. AI will increasingly handle routine coding tasks. The differentiators for you will be: Problem-framing: Can you take a vague idea and turn it into a solution? Architectural judgment: Can you design systems that scale and last? Ethical awareness: Can you spot risks in AI use and address them responsibly? South Korean equities have gained 88% in 2026 so far while Taiwan has expanded market cap by 58%. India's market cap, on the other hand, has fallen by over 8% since the beginning of the current calendar year, impacted by heavy selling from foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) amid geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia. They have sold equities worth $24 billion (₹2.2 lakh crore) in the first five months of 2026 compared with $18.9 billion (₹1.7 lakh crore) in the whole of 2025.Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, South Korea's two largest companies by market cap, have led the current rally in local equity markets with a year-to-date gain of 182% and 231% on bourses. The Asian semiconductor companies are benefitting from the rising AI capital expenditure since memory chips are a part of the building blocks of the technology.

Mumbai: Information technology stocks surged on Monday, dodging a weak broader market, with the Nifty IT index closing at its highest level since April 23, as attractive valuations and recent AI-led partnerships drew investor interest and prompted traders to build some fresh long positions. The Nifty IT index advanced 2.7%, its strongest single-day gain in nearly two weeks (since May 19), even as the benchmark Nifty declined 0.7%. Tech Mahindra, Infosys and LTM rose 3.7% each, while Persistent Systems gained 3.6%. Coforge and Oracle Financial Services Software advanced 2.6% and 2.1%, respectively."Indian IT firms are following suit of American companies like Anthropic and OpenAI by taking up contracts and tie-ups which are perceived as promising by investors," said Gaurav Sharma, head of Research, Globe Capital.Wipro's expanded Agentic AI partnership with ServiceNow and Coforge's acquisition of Encora have helped ease concerns that had weighed on the sector earlier due to AI-linked disruption fears. The rebound comes after a sharp underperformance this year. The Nifty IT index has fallen over 21% so far in 2026, compared with a 10.5% decline in the benchmark Nifty. The recent momentum has turned positive, with the IT index gaining about 3% over the past week, while the Nifty has fallen 2.7%.131452365"The open interest has doubled in the past couple of months in large-cap IT stocks, indicating a huge build-up of short positions," said Jay Vora, Technical Analyst, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. "On Monday, while short positions remained as is, traders built fresh long positions in the space."Vora said that a more meaningful short covering rally would require stocks to move above key technical levels, with most large-cap names currently 2-3% below their 40-day exponential moving averages."There are short positions in the midcap IT companies as well, but it is not as significant as the large caps," he said. The rebound in IT shares is also on account of valuations falling below 10-year averages following the recent sell-off."Large-cap names like TCS and Infosys are trading at mouthwatering levels, close to 16-17 times Price to Earnings, while midcap companies like Coforge, Oracle and Mphasis are around 20-30 times PE, which are attractive," Sharma said. While near-term volatility may persist, valuations remain compelling over a two-to-three-year horizon, he said. Sharma's top picks are OFSS, Tech Mahindra, Coforge and Mphasis, and recommends IT Exchange Traded Funds for retail investors. The momentum favours IT stocks now, though the index is nearing key hurdles."Technically, the Nifty IT index has immediate support established at the 29,300-28,900 zone, while initial resistance is positioned at 30,500, with a broader multi-week position of 31,200," said Nischal Jain, Quant Researcher, Share.Market by PhonePe.Sharma said the Nifty IT index is on the verge of a breakout from an inverse head and shoulder pattern, which could extend the rally towards 31,500.

AN artificial intelligence age estimation tool that aims to detect adult migrants posing as children will be deployed at the UK’s borders from next year, BBC News reported. A software company has been awarded a contract to develop and test the technology, which would estimate a person’s age by analysing photographs of them taken at the border. The report cited the UK Home Office as saying the technology would make it easier to identify adult migrants “attempting to game the system”, after initial testing indicated “promising performance and accuracy”. However, the Human Rights Watch urged the government to scrap the scheme, describing it as “unproven technology” that would undermine the protections vulnerable children were entitled to. New technology to be deployed from next year for strengthening asylum checks Unaccompanied child migrants receive support from local councils and are housed in the care system rather than more traditional asylum accommodation such as hotels. They are entitled to legal protections which can simplify the asylum application system and make it easier to stay in the country for longer. According to the BBC, the decision to use the software comes after years of heightened levels of people crossing the English Channel in small boats and claiming asylum at the border. Rising numbers A total of 111,084 people claimed asylum in the UK in the year ending June 2025, 14 per cent more than in the previous year. In the year ending March 2026, more than 6,400 migrants claiming to be children were age-assessed at the border, with 43pc found to be adults, according to Home Office data. A report carried out by the UK government’s independent immigration inspector last year found cases where adult migrants had been classified as children — and cases where child migrants had been wrongly classified as adults. The report said in the absence of a “foolproof” test, it was “inevitable that some age assessments will be wrong, which is clearly a cause for concern, especially where a child is denied the rights and protections to which they are entitled”. According to BBC, the government announced plans to use AI facial estimation technology to combat this problem last year. Published in Dawn, May 30th, 2026
