Tweeënhalf jaar lang versloeg Hisham Zaqout als journalist de oorlog in Gaza. Hij is nu in Nederland om met zijn ervaring journalisten in conflictgebieden te helpen. Dat doet hij door onderzoek te doen doen naar de overlevingsstrategieën van Palestijnse journalisten. Daarvoor kreeg hij een beurs van onderzoeksinstituut NIAS, dat een speciaal programma heeft voor onderzoekers uit oorlogs- en conflictgebieden. Zaqout kwam in februari naar Nederland. Hij is een van de drie Gazanen die via de rechter probeerde af te dwingen dat het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken hem zou helpen om zijn visum op te halen. Dat lag klaar in Jordanië, maar zonder hulp kwamen de drie Gaza niet uit. De bestuursrechter oordeelde dat Nederland hen niet hoefde te helpen. Op Zaqout had die uitspraak geen effect meer, hij was net in Nederland aangekomen met hulp van Qatar. Zijn werkgever Al Jazeera heeft in de Qatarese hoofdstad Doha zijn hoofdkantoor. Nooit gedacht aan stoppen Zeventien jaar werkt Zaqout voor de Arabische nieuwszender, de laatste 2,5 jaar vanwege de oorlog van Israël tegen Hamas onder zeer moeilijke omstandigheden. "Als correspondent maakte ik reportages en deed ik veel live verslag. We hadden geen kantoor meer. Mijn collega's en ik woonden in tenten en hadden vaak geen toegang tot schoon drinkwater, eten, genoeg benzine of een auto die werkte. Ondertussen werden we door het Israëlische leger aangevallen," vertelt hij. Dertien van zijn ruim dertig collega's kwamen om het leven. Volgens de Verenigde Naties zijn er sinds het begin van de oorlog in Gaza bijna 300 journalisten vermoord. Aan stoppen heeft Zaqout nooit gedacht. "Ik had geen keuze, we konden niet weg. Dus dan doe je wat wel kan en dat is werken. Het is de enige manier waarop we de rest van de wereld konden laten zien wat hier gebeurde." Behalve dat hij met het verlies van collega's te maken had, verloor hij 120 familieleden. Dat zijn naasten, maar ook verre familieleden. Familie die het overleefde, heeft hij in Gaza moeten achterlaten. Zijn vrouw en kinderen konden wel samen met hem Gaza te verlaten, zij wonen in België. Helpen op afstand Hoewel Zaqout niet meer in Gaza is, probeert hij zijn collega's waar hij kan vanuit Nederland te ondersteunen. "Veel van de apparatuur die ze gebruiken is beschadigd of werkt niet meer. Ze gebruiken hun mobiele telefoons om verslag te doen. Ik help ze om technologische problemen die ze hebben op te lossen." Ook schrijf hij nieuwsartikelen of reportages over Gaza. "Ik ben op een veilige plek, ik heb hier alles wat ik nodig heb. Ik werk nog steeds in Gaza, maar op afstand." Hoewel hij van zijn werk hield, mist hij het niet. Zijn collega's mist hij wel. "Ik leefde 2,5 jaar met hen. Mijn collega's zijn niet enkel mijn collega's. Ze zijn mijn vrienden." Sinds 10 oktober 2025 geldt er een staakt het vuren in Gaza. Toch betekent dat volgens Zaqout dat er voor zijn collega's weinig is veranderd. Ze wonen nog steeds in tenten, hebben geen kantoor en hebben nog dagelijks met bombardementen te maken. Journalisten zijn doelwit De ervaring die hij als journalist in Gaza heeft opgedaan, probeert hij nu in te zetten om collega's in conflictgebieden te helpen. Vijf maanden lang doet hij onderzoek bij het NIAS. Hij krijgt er gedurende zijn onderzoeksperiode onderdak, een kantoor, een beurs en hij heeft veel contact met Nederlandse en internationale onderzoekers die hier ook tijdelijk zijn. Zaqout onderzoekt hoe het journalisten in Gaza lukt om, ondanks pogingen om hen het zwijgen op te leggen, toch verslag te doen en te overleven. Hij hoopt uiteindelijk te kunnen helpen de handleiding voor journalisten in conflictgebieden van de International Federation of Journalists te actualiseren. "Toen ik op de universiteit zat, leerden we over de handleiding, die bevat veiligheidsprotocollen. In Gaza werken die niet. Niet alleen burgers, maar ook journalisten werden aangevallen. Wat doe je dan? Onderdeel moet zijn hoe je als journalist overleeft wanneer je wordt aangevallen en niet aan je basisbehoeften kunt voldoen, maar ook hoe je schrijft, filmt en live verslag doet met je mobiele telefoon. Welke applicaties handig zijn en hoe nieuwsredacties daar beter op ingericht kunnen worden." Eind juli zit zijn tijd in Nederland erop. Als journalist krijgt hij naar eigen zeggen geen toestemming om terug te gaan naar Gaza. "Ik was correspondent en dat werk wil ik voortzetten. Al Jazeera heeft verspreid over de wereld meer dan 100 kantoren. Ik ga daar werken waar ik nodig ben."

A top White House artificial intelligence policy adviser on Saturday said he will leave his position at the end of June, marking the exit of a leading figure helping craft policies for frontier technologies. “This journey has been the privilege of a lifetime,” the adviser, Sriram Krishnan, posted on social media platform X. Krishnan did not give a reason for leaving, but wrote in the post he intends to help “tackle some of the large challenges facing America” related to AI. Krishnan has been involved in the Trump administration’s efforts to create a national framework for regulating developments in AI.
