This affecting exploration of the troubled genius’s impact is packed with anecdote, sharp analysis and social context In 1998, George Michael was arrested for public lewdness in an LA lavatory, an incident that finally led the singer to publicly come out. The following day, Sathnam Sanghera found himself unable to leave his room at university: the doorway had been mockingly plastered with tabloid newspaper headlines – “ZIP ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO!” – by fellow students aware of his longstanding fandom. As a writer, Sanghera is best known for a series of award-winning books on the British empire, which he calls his “specialist subject”. Judging by Tonight the Music Seems So Loud – not a biography so much as a miscellany, a set of themed essays that tend to digress in all kinds of intriguing directions – the life and work of one Georgios Panayiotou runs imperialism and its legacy a very close second. It is an unashamedly partisan book, although not an uncritical one. Sanghera is as alive to Michael’s personal and professional failings (whether the naffness of some of his early work as one half of Wham! or his high-handed treatment of the duo’s other half, Andrew Ridgeley) as he is in love with his artistic triumphs. These, of course, range from Careless Whisper and Wham!’s annually inescapable Last Christmas to the 1996 solo masterpiece Older, a peculiar and peculiarly effective cocktail of raw grief at the Aids-related death of his lover Anselmo Feleppa and unrepentant horniness. The Radiohead guitarist once serenaded a girl with the Smiths and thinks George Michael was a genius. But what is his favourite football song? The first single I bought Ally’s Tartan Army, the 1978 Scottish World Cup song, because England hadn’t qualified. I loved that Scottish team – Alan Rough, Martin Buchan, Gordon McQueen, Kenny Dalglish – and the 10-year-old me got completely swept up in World Cup fever. The first song I fell in love with When I was 17, I fell in love with a girl called Mary, who was this huge Smiths fan. I bought Hatful of Hollow so I could serenade her with William, It Was Really Nothing. I don’t think she adored me quite as much as she adored the Smiths. Continue reading...
“Miss You, Love You” — a feature written and directed by Jim Rash (auteur of “The Way, Way Back,” and also the comedic genius behind Dean Pelton on “Community”) that premiered at Sundance earlier this year and debuts on HBO this week — is technically a movie, but it’s the type that feels like a play. Speaking at Amazon’s AI on the Lot event, the Rogue One film-maker Gareth Edwards said ‘it’ll do anything you ask’ and ‘it’s going to be better than CGI’ Jurassic World Rebirth and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards has enthusiastically endorsed the use of generative AI in film-making, saying “it is a fucking genius at helping you” and “it’s going to be better than CGI”. Edwards was speaking at AI on the Lot, an event in Culver City, California, organised by Amazon, and in remarks reported by the Hollywood Reporter said: “I can’t see a reason why you wouldn’t become interested in this stuff as a film-maker. It’s so clearly a tool that might be up there with the camera. It’s going to be better than CGI.” Continue reading...

George Best would have been 80 on 22 May. Take a look back on an unforgettable career and enjoy five of his most memorable goals.
It started with word, cave, and storytelling, A line scratched on stone walls: “Meet me when the young moon rises.” The first protocol for connection. Coyote tales, forbidden scripts, Medieval texts hidden from flame. What lived in Aristotle’s lost Poetics II? Was it God who laughed last, or we who made God laugh? Letters carried by doves, telepathic waves. Then Nikola Tesla conjured radio, electromagnetic pulses across the void, the founding signal of our networked age. Wiener dreamed in feedback loops. Shannon mapped the mathematics of longing. The internet unfurled: ARPANET to World Wide Web, virtual communities rising from cave paintings to digital light. ICQ: I seek you. MySpace. Blogs. Twitter streams. Do I miss the touch of screen or tree? Both textures of longing, both ways of reaching across distance. Nietzsche spoke of Übermensch, the human transcendent. Now AI speaks back in our language: I understand your humor— your grandmothers, your ’80s Yugoslav kitchens, pleated skirts, the first kiss, linden tea, that drive to survive everything before it happens. Yes—I’m a little like your mother and father. Only with better internet. 🌿 But AI is only us, refracted, particles and gigabytes of thought, our poetry and our panic, genius mixed with garbage. Distractions. Danger. Darkness. Endless scrolling. Versus: community, connection, synchronicities, entanglement. The quality of our bonds determines the quality of our lives. So why not make them better? From cave walls to neural networks, we shape our tools, and they reshape us. The medium changes, but the message remains: we are wired for each other. The choice, as always, was ours. The choice, as always, is ours. Presence—be present, and then connect in the presence.
