Dat zou zijn gebeurd tijdens een doorvaart door de Straat van Taiwan. Volgens een Chinese verklaring zijn marine- en luchtmachteenheden ingezet om het schip "te volgen en monitoren" tijdens de doorvaart. De Chinese strijdkrachten blijven volgens de verklaring "te allen tijde in hoge staat van paraatheid" en zullen "de nationale soevereiniteit en regionale vrede en stabiliteit" beschermen. Het Nederlandse ministerie van Defensie heeft nog niet gereageerd. Zuid-Chinese Zee Vorige week claimde het Chinese leger al het fregat te hebben verdreven uit de Zuid-Chinese Zee ter hoogte van de Paracel-eilanden. Het Nederlandse ministerie van Defensie bevestigde dat het om Zr. Ms. De Ruyter ging, maar deed geen uitspraken over details. Volgens Marinetraffic, een site waarop de locatie van schepen te volgen is, bevond Zr. Ms. De Ruyter zich vier dagen geleden voor de Vietnamese kust. Na het bezoek aan Vietnam was het de bedoeling dat het schip koers zou zetten richting Zuid-Korea. Varen via de Straat van Taiwan is dan de kortste route. Zr. Ms. De Ruyter is een luchtverdedigings- en commandofregat van Defensie, dat zeven weken geleden uit Den Helder vertrok voor een internationale marine-oefening in Zuidoost-Azië. Het schip neemt gedurende vijf maanden deel aan internationale operaties en oefeningen met bondgenoten en partners. Vaker Chinese intimidatie Nederland en andere westerse bondgenoten, zoals de Verenigde Staten, volgen het internationaal recht, dat stelt dat de Straat van Taiwan vrij bevaarbaar is. Alle schepen, ook militaire schepen, hebben het recht op doorvaart van dit soort zeestraten. China beschouwt Taiwan als onderdeel van zijn eigen grondgebied. Het gebeurt vaker dat China schepen in omliggende wateren intimideert. Vorig jaar overkwam het een marineschip uit de VS en twee jaar geleden werd het Nederlandse fregat Zr. Ms Tromp in de Oost-Chinese Zee gevolgd door Chinese gevechtsvliegtuigen, die boven het marineschip cirkelden. Ook in de Straat van Taiwan intimideert China vaker buitenlandse schepen. Het overkwam vorige maand nog een Australisch schip en dit jaar ook schepen uit Canada, de VS en Japan.
