Brit in Sweden still hopeful on receiving citizenship before deadline day

With the clock running down towards midnight and the introduction of the new, stricter requirements for Swedish citizenship on June 6th, without transition rules for those currently waiting for a decision, Brit David Hollingsworth is still keeping his fingers crossed his application will be processed in time. Applying for Swedish citizenship three years ago, David Hollingsworth appeared in person at the Migration Agency office in Stockholm last week after getting an email to say it was the last leg of his application process. Radio Sweden spoke to him today, Friday, to find out the latest on his citizenship application.

Sweden's Left Party removes local candidates who praised terror groups

The Left Party has removed 13 candidates from its party lists for upcoming municipal elections after the newspaper Expressen reported that they had praised terror organisations or their acts.

Man accused of torture under former Syrian regime seeks to live in Sweden

Swedish Radio's investigative programme Kaliber has discovered that a man accused of torture, rape and killing of prison inmates during the former Syrian regime is walking free in Damascus. He's currently awaiting a decision from the Swedish Migration Board on a residency permit in Sweden. Following Kaliber's revelations, the Syrian authorities are currently looking for the man.

New poll has Liberals below parliamentary threshold

According the party preference poll by Statistics Sweden published today, the Liberal Party doesn't make it over the four-percent threshold to stay in the Swedish parliament as it currently gets just 2,5 percent. The centre-left opposition parties also get larger support in comparison with the governing parties and the Sweden Democrats. The difference between the blocs is 12,6 percentage points. The party preference poll is published annually and shows what the election result would have been, had an election been held in May 2026.

Takeaway pizza prices hold steady despite VAT-cut

Takeaway pizza hasn't become cheaper despite lowered VAT on takeaways. That's according to a survey by Swedish Radio's local channel P4 Jönköping. VAT on foodstuffs and takeaways was cut in half from 12 to 6 percent on April 1st this year, with the aim of reducing prices for customers. Pizza restaurant owners say wholesale prices have gone up and if not for the VAT-cut, they would have had to raise their prices.

13 Left Party candidates cut from municipal election lists

Thirteen Left Party candidates will be removed from municipal election lists following revelations by newspaper Expressen about the candidates’ praise of terrorism. Left Party candidates in Helsingborg celebrated Hamas’s attack on Israel in 2023 on the very day the attack was carried out. The candidates concerned were on election lists in the municipalities of Örebro, Sävsjö, Eksjö, Växjö, Landskrona, Halmstad and Helsingborg, party secretary Maria Forsberg told Swedish Television.

Public health report: Sexual satisfaction in Sweden varies by age and gender

Women in Sweden are generally more satisfied with their sex lives than men in comparable age-brackets. That's according to a new survey by the Public Health Agency of Sweden in which nearly 16,000 people aged between 16 and 84 were asked about sexual health and reproductive rights. However, the survey also points to continued challenges when it comes to women experiencing unwanted sexual attention and sexual violence.

Report: Foreign-born pensioners receive thousands of kronor less every month

The difference in pension between those born abroad and those born in Sweden has increased significantly in recent decades, according to a new report by insurance provider Folksam. For people born in 1957 abroad, the difference amounts to almost SEK 5,700 in their pension as a whole per month before tax compared to those born in Sweden. For people born in 1937, the corresponding difference was only SEK 650 per month. New customs fee will make that cheap purchase from outside the EU more expensive

From July 1st a new customs fee will be introduced for products ordered from outside the European Union, which could significantly rack up the cost of your small purchase. For packages worth less than 150 euros a fee of three euros per product will be added, according to Swedish Customs. The new EU rules, which are to be applied across the union, are supposed to stop products that don't meet the EU's safety requirements, and to create healthier competition for companies inside the EU.

Employer groups predict lower growth ahead of wage negotiations

Ahead of Sweden's next big round of collective bargaining, several employer groups in Swedish industry say the economy is developing worse than previously expected. They have cut their growth forecast for this year, from about 3 to just over 2 per cent, and say there is no space for wage increases similar to the last two rounds of collective bargaining, when union wage demands rose to just over 4 per cent. Industry employers organisations Teknikföretagen and Industriarbetsgivarna speak about economic uncertainty, while trade unions in the industry sector have no plans to lower their wage demands.

Proposal: Tighter rules for people wanting to bring family to Sweden

The government and the Sweden Democrats want to raise the bar for people who want to bring their family to Sweden from abroad To bring a partner and two kids here, the parties propose that you need to earn at least SEK 23 818 per month after tax, in addition to your housing costs. Students will not be able to bring their families here, and people who have asylum-related status in Sweden will have to wait for two years before they can apply to bring their families here.

Swedish MP suspected of child pornography

An MP with several high-profile roles within the Sweden Democrat Party is being investigated for child pornography offences, reports Swedish Radio News. During a search of the politician’s home, police seized several electronic devices, which are now being analysed, reports Swedish Television News. The Sweden Democrats tell SVT that the person has left all assignments for the party.

Survey: Housing shortage puts young Swedes off having kids

Almost one in five young adults (18 per cent) hesitate to start a family due to the housing shortage, according to a new survey by the Tenants' Association. Four years ago, that number was just 4 per cent. Fewer municipalities report an overall housing shortage, compared to four years ago, but it is the affordable housing that is scarce, according to the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning.

Syrian transitional government offers Sweden access for war crimes evidence

Syria’s transitional government says Sweden and other European countries can come to Syria to gather evidence of Assad-era war crimes, Swedish Radio's investigative programme Kaliber reports. Spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba says investigators can get access to documents, witnesses and crime scenes, and that security and intelligence archives are largely intact. This comes after Kaliber found that 15 men with alleged ties to the Assad regime are living in Sweden.

Long-term unemployment remains high in Sweden

Unemployment has fallen since last summer, but the number of long-term unemployed people in Sweden remains high. The Public Employment Service has been criticised for not doing enough to help people get a job, or to offer training for professions where there are jobs available. The agency's director general, Maria Hemström Hemmingsson, says that they have relied too much on digital channels in the past. Now they will prioritise to meet in person with people who are, or who risk becoming, long-term unemployed.
