Long-term unemployment remains high in Sweden

Unemployment has fallen since last summer, but the number of long-term unemployed people in Sweden remains high. The Public Employment Service has been criticised for not doing enough to help people get a job, or to offer training for professions where there are jobs available. The agency's director general, Maria Hemström Hemmingsson, says that they have relied too much on digital channels in the past. Now they will prioritise to meet in person with people who are, or who risk becoming, long-term unemployed.

More Swedes need treatment for obesity — treatment available

The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare says in a new report that more people with obesity need to be assessed and receive treatment from the healthcare system. More and more people in Sweden are being diagnosed, but healthcare still reaches too few, despite there being effective treatment methods. Obesity leads to increased excess mortality and a risk of related diseases. An estimated 1.3 million adults in Sweden are affected by the condition.

Social Democrats vow to scrap work permit salary rule

The Social Democrats say they will scrap the system with a set salary requirement for work permit holders if they get into power after the election this autumn. The party's spokesperson on migration Ida Karkiainen tells Radio Sweden they want a system where salary requirements and possible exemptions are agreed on by the employers organisations and the trade unions, not by government. "We will keep the high requirements for salary, but it needs to be modeled with the trade unions due to a collective agreement that is more flexible in the labor market," she says.
