This article was first published by The Korea Times in a partnership with the South China Morning Post. Two of China’s leading memory-chip makers are moving closer to public listings, posing a significant long-term challenge to South Korean giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, despite a limited immediate threat, according to analysts. ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China’s leading dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) producer, won approval last week for its nearly 30-billion-yuan...
Nine major industry trade groups have warned the Trump administration that the rapid expansion of AI data centers is severely straining global memory chip supplies. This surge in demand is driving up prices and reducing availability for critical sectors like automotive, healthcare, and consumer electronics, posing risks to US supply chains and the broader economy.
Microsoft's AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, revealed a strategic shift, prioritizing competition with Anthropic over rivals like Google and Meta. This focus stems from Anthropic's aggressive entry into enterprise software and coding tools, posing a direct threat to Microsoft's core business. Microsoft is now developing its own advanced AI models to counter this challenge and reduce reliance on OpenAI.

Defense tech is red hot right now. Anduril and Mach Industries just doubled and quadrupled their valuations, respectively, and the U.S. government is proposing a 40% increase in defense budget. A wave of new startups is chasing those government contracts, but according to Ross Fubini, the venture investor who wrote Anduril’s first check, most of them will get lost in the Valley of Death between prototype contract […]
The former U.S. energy advisor warned the industry must change how it talks to the public or risk being blocked from building data centers and power plants fueling AI.

The state legislature plans to vote on imposing a one-year ban on constructing new, massive energy-devouring data centers in New York amid a backlash.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Monday said that he will soon introduce a bill proposing to give the public a 50 percent stake in large artificial intelligence (AI) companies. In a nearly seven-minute video message, the progressive senator said that he will introduce the AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act “in the coming weeks.” He said...
Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act, proposing a one-time 50% tax on the stock of major AI firms. This aims to transfer control from Silicon Valley billionaires to the American public, arguing AI was built on 'stolen' data. The fund would grant public voting shares and eventually distribute dividends.

Microchip development has always been a race to build smaller and smaller transistors – the fundamental components of chip circuits. Now China’s Huawei Technologies wants to change the game entirely. Faced with US tech export restrictions that block its access to the world’s most advanced chipmaking machinery, Huawei is proposing a fundamental shift in semiconductor progress: stop obsessing over how small the transistors are and start focusing on how fast data moves through the system. It is a...
AN artificial intelligence age estimation tool that aims to detect adult migrants posing as children will be deployed at the UK’s borders from next year, BBC News reported. A software company has been awarded a contract to develop and test the technology, which would estimate a person’s age by analysing photographs of them taken at the border. The report cited the UK Home Office as saying the technology would make it easier to identify adult migrants “attempting to game the system”, after initial testing indicated “promising performance and accuracy”. However, the Human Rights Watch urged the government to scrap the scheme, describing it as “unproven technology” that would undermine the protections vulnerable children were entitled to. New technology to be deployed from next year for strengthening asylum checks Unaccompanied child migrants receive support from local councils and are housed in the care system rather than more traditional asylum accommodation such as hotels. They are entitled to legal protections which can simplify the asylum application system and make it easier to stay in the country for longer. According to the BBC, the decision to use the software comes after years of heightened levels of people crossing the English Channel in small boats and claiming asylum at the border. Rising numbers A total of 111,084 people claimed asylum in the UK in the year ending June 2025, 14 per cent more than in the previous year. In the year ending March 2026, more than 6,400 migrants claiming to be children were age-assessed at the border, with 43pc found to be adults, according to Home Office data. A report carried out by the UK government’s independent immigration inspector last year found cases where adult migrants had been classified as children — and cases where child migrants had been wrongly classified as adults. The report said in the absence of a “foolproof” test, it was “inevitable that some age assessments will be wrong, which is clearly a cause for concern, especially where a child is denied the rights and protections to which they are entitled”. According to BBC, the government announced plans to use AI facial estimation technology to combat this problem last year. Published in Dawn, May 30th, 2026
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on Friday warned the public against artificial intelligence (AI)-generated photos of rescuers, noting that such photos can easily spread during times of emergency and disasters. In a Facebook advisory, the BFP flagged as “fake news alert” the circulating photos of BFP rescuers posing and dancing in
