Committee formed to drive AI boost: FS

Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Sunday said a committee dedicated to artificial intelligence development in Hong Kong would hold its first meeting this month. Writing in his weekly blog, Chan said the Committee on AI+ and Industry Development Strategy consists of experts, academics and business representatives. It will study the use of AI in life and health science, embodied AI as well as AI application strategies in various aspects such as transport, culture and sustainable development, he said. Chan also said the government had allocated HK$50 million to launch AI training for all, including courses on AI application, lectures and competitions. He said over 200 events were expected to be hosted in two years, benefiting some 50,000 people. Chan went on to say that the form of AI training would be diversified to meet the needs of different groups. “For example, training for students can place more emphasis on encouraging practical application,” he said. “To help the elderly gain a basic understanding of AI so that they can better use the tool and avoid being scammed, we will first offer training for the community and students and let them become ambassadors for seniors’ AI learning.” The FS also said a mainland firm working on embodied AI would launch a robot retail store at the Hung Hom harbourfront soon, with a robot store manager serving customers in multiple languages around the clock. “A person-in-charge told us they chose Hong Kong as the first stop for their retail stores to go global because of the city’s international platform, open atmosphere for new technologies and visibility of innovation and technology projects,” Chan said. “International capital continues to pay attention to and be optimistic about our country’s leading advantages in several emerging industries. The Hong Kong market, as an important international financing centre for these companies, also enhances the city’s attractiveness to start-ups and technology companies.” Chan added that the SAR has been promoting AI development at full speed over the past few years. AI als voetbalorakel? Waarom chatbots geen garantie zijn voor winst WK-pool

Het voorspellen van het WK voetbal van deze zomer zal voor veel fanatieke of juist minder betrokken voetbalfans niet de makkelijkste opgave zijn. Menig persoon die een voetbalpool invult, zal met moeite een winnaar kunnen aanwijzen bij Iran tegen Nieuw-Zeeland en Congo-Oezbekistan. Als je daarbij optelt dat er dit toernooi veel meer teams (48 in plaats van 32) meespelen en dus ook veel meer wedstrijden te voorspellen zijn, zal het invullen van een voetbalpool kunnen voelen als een heuse opgave. Dankzij de opkomst van AI-chatbots in de afgelopen jaren is het aannemelijk dat meer mensen de hulp zullen inroepen van een digitale assistent. Sterker nog: het is het eerste WK voetbal waarbij een AI-chatbot op grote schaal kan worden gebruikt voor voorspellingen. De eerste publieke versie van ChatGPT werd uitgebracht in november 2022, toen de groepsfase van het WK in Qatar nog bezig was. Sindsdien zijn er meerdere AI-modellen op de markt gekomen en is het gebruik van kunstmatige intelligentie gemeengoed geworden voor veel mensen. Westers gericht Een aandachtspunt daarbij is dat chatbots als Claude, ChatGPT en Gemini niet specifiek zijn getraind om voetbalwedstrijden te voorspellen, zegt Ruud Adriaans, hoofd AI bij accountantsbureau BDO. "Dat zijn modellen die heel breed ingezet kunnen worden. Ze hebben data van zo'n beetje het hele internet gebruikt." Maar meer data betekent niet automatisch een grotere kans op een goed antwoord bij het invullen van een WK-pool. "Als je een open vraag zou stellen aan een AI-bot, krijg je een soort gemene deler als antwoord." Concreet leidt dat ertoe dat de landen die als favoriet worden gezien, in het antwoord van de chatbot vaak netjes door de poulefase heen komen. De data waarmee de chatbot rekent hebben nog een effect, zegt Adriaans. "ChatGPT en veel andere westerse AI-modellen baseren zich onder meer op data van het internet en die zijn overwegend westers. Westerse nieuwssites zijn bijvoorbeeld meer vertegenwoordigd." Dat heeft weer impact op het antwoord dat je van een chatbot krijgt. Zo is de kans groter dat westerse en 'mediagenieke' landen overschat worden door AI, simpelweg omdat ze vaker voorkomen en meer worden opgehemeld in de aangeleverde data. Geen verrassingen Die vooringenomenheid is meteen ook de valkuil, omdat een AI-model je dus niet zomaar een verrassende uitkomst geeft. Marokko dat de halve finale van het WK haalt en daarbij Spanje en Portugal uitschakelt, zoals in 2022, zou een AI-bot niet hebben voorspeld. Daar komt bovenop dat een chatbot een compleet ander antwoord kan geven als je dezelfde vraag vijf minuten later stelt. Dat merkte ook Peter Neef, die de website Pouletips.nl beheert. Hij werkt al jaren met een rekenmodel dat zich baseert op data van wedkantoren en vergeleek dat dit jaar met de antwoorden van AI-chatbots. Die lopen nogal uiteen. ChatGPT en Gemini verwachten een 1-1 bij de groepsfasewedstrijd Nederland-Zweden, Claude denkt 2-1 voor Nederland en Neef zelf gaat uit van een 1-0 winst voor Oranje. De data van de wedkantoren zouden betrouwbaarder moeten zijn, omdat daar ook bijvoorbeeld WK-selecties, blessures en recente wedstrijden in worden meegenomen. Volgens Neef hebben de bookmakers een duidelijke voorkeur. "Frankrijk en Spanje, die hebben de grootste kans om wereldkampioen te worden. Maar die hebben net wel net allebei een oefenwedstrijd niet weten te winnen, dus dat moeten we echt nog maar zien." Hij wacht in elk geval nog even met het invullen van zijn pool. "Dat is een van de tips ook: vul alles zo laat mogelijk in. Want wie weet zijn er nog blessures of gebeuren er nog andere dingen." Onverwacht goed Kortom: AI een volledige voorspelling laten genereren is geen goed idee als je een pool wil winnen. Maar hulp vragen kan wel, als het maar zeer specifieke vragen zijn, zegt Adriaans van BDO. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld ermee onderzoeken welk van de Afrikaanse landen het de afgelopen periode onverwachts goed heeft gedaan. "AI kan je daar wel, mits je de vraag goed kadert, een prima antwoord op helpen vinden. Zolang je het maar met een bron kunt verifiëren." Adriaans omschrijft het als volgt. "Zie het qua betrouwbaarheid een beetje als je oom die voetbal volgt en ook wat heeft gegoogeld. Uiteindelijk moet je kiezen of je hem vertrouwt of toch liever zelf je research doet."

Nvidia CEO mounts charm push in South Korea with TV talk show, baseball appearances

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang makes his second visit to South Korea in just seven months this week, it won’t be only to meet top memory chip and robotics executives, but to throw the first pitch at a baseball game and appear on a TV talk show. While a celebrity in his own right, the charm push by the Taiwan-born 63-year-old highlights South Korea’s critical position in the AI landscape. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix between them make about 70 per cent of the memory needed for AI chips like Nvidia’s. And the country’s strength in manufacturing and robotics sets it up to be a key player in physical AI, where AI is embedded in robots, cars and factories. “Nvidia’s dependence on South Korean suppliers is rising,” Jeff Kim, an analyst at Seoul-based KB Securities, wrote in a research note. Huang “needs a manufacturing site for physical AI”, Kim said. “South Korea is emerging as a perfect testbed.” Asia’s fourth-largest economy is also a major Nvidia customer, with the Silicon Valley-based company announcing in October that it would supply more than 260,000 of its most advanced AI chips to the government and some of the country’s biggest businesses. Analysts and investors say South Korea’s importance has been magnified after trade frictions spoiled sales of the most advanced semiconductors to China. “South Korean companies are running high-end factories, which need a lot of these kinds of chips,” said Seung-yub Lee, a fund manager at Seoul-based Quad Investment Management. President Lee Jae Myung has vowed to make AI investment a top policy priority, aiming to turn South Korea into one of the world’s top three AI powers amid a broader push to counter the economic impact of a shrinking population. “Korea is a critical part of our ecosystem,” Huang told reporters at a dinner with South Korean tech executives on Monday in Taipei, the first day of the annual, industry-defining Computex trade show. He highlighted robotics when asked where Nvidia could invest, because “Korea is a manufacturing country, and Korea has a population limit”. “We have a lot to do together,” he said. Huang’s plans clearly include courting the country’s 50 million-strong population. He will appear on one of South Korea’s most popular talk shows, “You Quiz on the Block”, which its production company, CJ ENM, likens to the Jimmy Fallon Show in the US. And he will don a Doosan Bears jersey to throw the first pitch at Sunday’s home game against the Kiwoom Heroes, with Doosan Group Chairman Park Jeong-won acting as the ceremonial first batter. Arms of chaebol Doosan develop robots and make materials used in Nvidia’s Blackwell chips. Park Ju-gun, head of corporate analysis firm Leaders Index, said Huang learned a lesson from his visit in October, when a meeting over chicken and beer with the chiefs of Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor at a Kkanbu Chicken outlet generated a big media buzz. Huang was coy when asked by Reuters which South Korean executives he would meet this time, but food will again be a feature. According to local media, he may have a Korean barbecue dinner in Seoul’s trendy Sungsu area with executives from SK Group, Hyundai Motor and LG Group.
