Statement by Palazzo Chigi on anti-money laundering operation

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, and the Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, express their profound satisfaction with the large-scale anti-money laundering operation that has led to the seizure of substantial assets worth over EUR 200 million. They also extend their congratulations to the Guardia di Finanza [Italian Finance Police], which carried out and coordinated the operation internationally.

This is yet another severe blow dealt to the mafia under this Government, enabling drug trafficking proceeds that flourished under Cosa Nostra and bosses like Matteo Messina Denaro to be recovered.

The Government reaffirms its commitment to allocating recovered assets to measures aimed at improving security for citizens. The funds seized during today’s judicial operation may in fact be distributed among the relevant authorities as early as next year, to then be used to step up police action, in particular to strengthen police presence at railway stations.
