Initiatives by Palazzo Chigi to mark the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic
The Presidency of the Council of Ministers is marking the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic with a series of initiatives planned for 1 and 2 June 2026.
On Tuesday 2 June, at 09:15, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, will attend the ceremony at the Altare della Patria memorial in Rome, where the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. She will then watch the traditional military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali on the occasion of Republic Day. In the evening, at 21:00, President Meloni will attend the event ‘The Faces of the Republic’ in Piazza del Quirinale.
From 21:00 on Monday 1 June until 23:59 on Tuesday 2 June 2026, with a break during daylight hours, Palazzo Chigi’s main façade, overlooking Piazza Colonna, will be embellished with an innovative and immersive 3D architectural projection mapping show dedicated to Republic Day. This video-mapping show will include a series of virtual compositions and deconstructions in dialogue with the building’s architectural features, alternating with symbolic references to the tricolour flag, in a story combining technological innovation and institutional remembrance. The show will culminate with the logo created by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers to mark the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic being projected onto Palazzo Chigi’s main façade. The logo is the result of an artistic and digital reworking of the historic floor pattern at the centre of the Council of Ministers meeting room.
On Tuesday 2 June, Palazzo Chigi will be opening its doors to citizens. Guided tours will take place from 12:30 until 19:30 (last entry at 19:00), including the Courtyard of Honour and the main rooms of the palace. Visitors will receive a publication printed especially for the 80th anniversary of the Republic, containing the Italian Constitution, the words of the national anthem, and the official colour scheme of the Italian flag. The publication will also include a QR code to connect citizens to a multimedia section of the Italian Government website dedicated to Republic Day.
The special opening of Palazzo Chigi will be accompanied by a programme of musical performances by the bands of the armed forces, police forces, and emergency services.
The programme will begin at 14:30 with the Fanfara dei Bersaglieri [Bersaglieri brass band], which will perform the national anthem in Palazzo Chigi’s Courtyard of Honour. Performances will then continue in Piazza Colonna by: the Bersaglieri brass band; the Roma Capitale Local Police band; the Italian National Fire Service band; the Italian Red Cross band; the Guardia di Finanza [Italian finance police] band; the Italian Prison Police band; the Italian State Police band; the Arma dei Carabinieri band; the Italian Air Force band; the Italian Navy band. The musical programme will be brought to a close at around 19:15 with the Italian Army band performing the ‘Canto degli Italiani’ in Palazzo Chigi’s Courtyard of Honour.
