In de geboortestreek van d'Artagnan, de beroemde Franse musketier van wie mogelijk het skelet in Maastricht is ontdekt, wordt met verbazing en verontrusting gekeken naar de gang van zaken rondom het onderzoek. Bij de opgraving zouden ernstige fouten zijn gemaakt, waardoor een aanzienlijk deel van de botresten mogelijk niet meer kan worden geïdentificeerd. "Wat me kwaad zou maken, is als de beenderen zodanig zijn aangetast dat we niet meer kunnen vaststellen of het om d'Artagnan gaat of niet", zegt Aymeri de Montesquiou (83), bij wie DNA is afgenomen om dat met de resten te vergelijken. De Montesquiou zou via de bloedlijn van de moeder van d'Artagnan verwant zijn aan de musketier. De NOS zocht hem op in zijn kasteel in het plaatsje Marsan. Onderzoek had in Frankrijk gemoeten "Ik betreur de verwarring", zegt hij vanuit zijn bibliotheek, omringd door eeuwenoude boeken. "Ik ben er echt van overtuigd - en ik zeg dat niet uit nationalisme - dat het onderzoek in Frankrijk had moeten worden uitgevoerd. In een laboratorium van de politie of de gendarmerie. Dan zou alles waarschijnlijk rustiger zijn verlopen." De Montesquiou stond in Parijs bloed en speeksel af voor vergelijkend DNA-onderzoek. Dat gebeurde volgens hem in aanwezigheid van archeoloog Wim Dijkman, die verantwoordelijk was voor het eerste deel van de opgraving in Maastricht. "De monsters zijn vervolgens naar München verstuurd", zegt hij. "Maar daarna is er in Nederland een verwarrende situatie ontstaan. Ik heb de indruk dat meerdere personen de eer van de ontdekking willen opstrijken." Op de vraag of Frankrijk nu alsnog zou moeten ingrijpen, antwoordt De Montesquiou instemmend. "Omdat het over een heel belangrijk persoon gaat, zouden we de rust moeten terugbrengen", zegt hij. "Frankrijk zou moeten zeggen: geef ons de monsters, dan laten we ze analyseren in een goed laboratorium." De vondst van het skelet was in maart wereldnieuws. Vooraanstaande kenners van d'Artagnan hadden al langer het vermoeden dat de musketier onder de Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk in de wijk Wolder lag begraven. Dat bij het lichaam ook een Franse munt en resten van een musketkogel zijn gevonden, leidde tot nog meer enthousiasme. Maar de aanvankelijke euforie maakt steeds meer plaats voor zorgen. De gemeente Maastricht stuurde vorige week een feitenrelaas naar de gemeenteraad waarin staat dat Dijkman geen vergunning had voor de opgraving. De gemeente nam daarom begin maart de regie over, in samenwerking met de Saxion Hogeschool in Deventer. Het archeologenteam van de gemeente stelt dat de beenderen tijdens de opgraving ernstig zijn aangetast, waardoor het "duidelijk is dat er sprake is van een aanzienlijk verlies aan informatiewaarde". Een onderzoeker die anoniem wil blijven, zei tegen de regionale omroep L1 dat meer dan de helft van het materiaal is "verstoord". Botresten zouden in plastic ijsbakjes los bij elkaar zijn gedaan, zonder goed bijgehouden documentatie. Ook is op beelden te zien hoe Dijkman in het graf stond en met blote handen resten aanraakte. Een deel van de botresten wordt bovendien nog door de voormalig stadsarcheoloog achtergehouden. Nadat hij had geweigerd deze aan de gemeente over te dragen, zat hij kortstondig vast voor het overtreden van de Erfgoedwet. Tasten in het duister "De situatie is voor ons erg onduidelijk", zegt ook Alina Goebel, werkzaam voor het d'Artagnan-museum in Lupiac, waar de musketier opgroeide. "Zeker omdat wij de ontwikkelingen vooral via de pers volgen. Alle verhalen rond de archeoloog, de kwesties met de parochie. We zitten ver bij Maastricht vandaan, dus we tasten ook een beetje in het duister." Hoewel nog verre van zeker is of het skelet inderdaad van d'Artagnan is, krijgt het museum in Lupiac door de vondst al meer bezoekers. "Iedereen is heel nieuwsgierig", zegt Goebel. "We krijgen vaak vragen of er al nieuws is over de resultaten." Aymeri de Montesquiou heeft geen contact met de gemeente Maastricht. De oud-senator had een lange loopbaan als politicus en wordt in Frankrijk ook als omstreden beschouwd vanwege belastingontduiking en innige banden met Rusland. "Ik zou graag willen dat de zaken worden opgehelderd en dat er geen interne ruzie is", zegt hij. "Het is heel goed mogelijk dat het skelet van d'Artagnan is. Maar we moeten afwachten en dit moet op een serieuze manier worden aangepakt." De gemeente Maastricht geeft op 17 juni een persconferentie over het onderzoek naar het skelet. Het is onduidelijk of dan al eerste resultaten worden bekendgemaakt. Bronnen zeggen tegen L1 dat het tot dit najaar kan duren voor een definitieve uitspraak kan worden gedaan.
