Het land moet nog wel aan een aantal voorwaarden voldoen, voordat het geld daadwerkelijk naar Boedapest gaat. Het binnenhalen van het bevroren EU-geld was een belangrijke verkiezingsbelofte van Magyar. "Als ik na elk bezoek hier met zo veel geld vertrek, kom ik vaker langs," grapte hij na afloop van zijn gesprek met Commissievoorzitter Von der Leyen in Brussel. De Europese Commissie bevroor afgelopen jaren meerdere fondsen voor Hongarije. Het grootste deel van die subsidies werd ingehouden vanwege grote zorgen over de staat van de rechtstaat en corruptie. "Nieuw tijdperk" "Maar er is een nieuw tijdperk aangebroken voor Hongarije," zegt Von der Leyen. Daarmee doelt ze op de verkiezingszege van Magyar in april, die in Brussel tot grote opluchting leidde. Magyars voorganger Orbán blokkeerde regelmatig Europese plannen en hield zich niet aan Europese regels. Met Magyar kunnen weer constructieve gesprekken worden gevoerd. Het bedrag waar Hongarije nu aanspraak op kan maken, bestaat uit drie delen: tien miljard euro uit het coronaherstelfonds, 4,2 miljard euro uit een fonds om regio's te versterken en ten slotte 2,2 miljard euro om de academische vrijheid te verbeteren. Het gaat om 12,9 miljard euro aan subsidies en 3,5 miljard euro aan goedkope leningen. Geld nog niet binnen Met name om de tien miljard euro uit het coronaherstelfonds binnen te halen is grote haast geboden. Hongarije moet voor 31 augustus aan een lange lijst voorwaarden voldoen. Het gaat bijvoorbeeld om maatregelen tegen corruptie, hervormingen van de rechtstaat en investeringen in het energienet. Pas als Boedapest die maatregelen daadwerkelijk heeft doorgevoerd, kan het land aanspraak maken op het geld. Dat is niet voor niks. Want eerder zat de Europese Unie met een soortgelijke situatie in Polen. Daar won de pro-Europese Donald Tusk de verkiezingen, waarna de EU al snel het geblokkeerde geld vrijgaf. Maar kort daarna werd de conservatieve nationalist Nawrocki president en werden hervormingen juist tegengehouden.
Polen reagiert empört auf den Ehrennamen „Helden der UPA“ für eine ukrainische Militäreinheit. Grund sind Gräuel im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Präsident Nawrocki will Selenskyj deshalb eine hohe Auszeichnung entziehen. Ministerpräsident Tusk ist beunruhigt.
