Miniworld Rotterdam is failliet, blijkt uit een brief van de directie aan de leveranciers van het overdekte miniatuurmuseum. De miniatuurwereld, die in 2007 opende vlak bij Rotterdam Centraal, verkeerde al langer in financieel zwaar weer. "Het valt mij zwaar om dit bericht aan u te moeten sturen", schrijft Miniworld-bestuurder Marc van Buren in de brief. "Miniworld staat al langere tijd voor grote uitdagingen. Helaas moet ik berichten dat er nu een situatie is ontstaan die ertoe leidt dat een faillissement onafwendbaar is", schrijft Van Buren. Iconische bouwwerken De toeristische attractie aan het Weena begon in 2007 als Railz Miniworld, met een focus op modelspoorbanen. Later werden daar iconische Rotterdamse gebouwen aan toegevoegd. Het museum was met ruim 650 vierkante meter uitgegroeid tot de grootste overdekte miniatuurwereld van de Benelux. Anno 2026 waren vele bouwwerken te zien zoals De Kuip, de Euromast, de Ballentent en Hotel New York. Daarnaast reden er nog altijd treinen en trams rond, schrijft de regionale omroep Rijnmond. Ook werden actuele gebeurtenissen geregeld toegevoegd aan Miniworld. Zo was na de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen een abseilende Carola Schouten van de Euromast te zien. De Rotterdamse burgemeester had beloofd om van het bouwwerk te abseilen, als het opkomstcijfer in haar stad hoger dan vier jaar geleden zou zijn. Er is overigens nog geen datum bekend waarop Schouten zich in een klimgordel zal hijsen om haar waaghalsactie daadwerkelijk uit te voeren. In de brief aan de leveranciers schijft Van Buren dat het faillissement over enkele weken officieel zal worden gemaakt. "Op 19 juni zal een eigen aangifte tot faillissement worden gedaan. Naar verwachting wordt het op 23 juni uitgesproken door de rechtbank Rotterdam en wordt er een curator benoemd." In die wetenschap zijn de deuren van de miniatuurwereld voorgoed gesloten: "Voor nu is besloten dat alle activiteiten per direct worden gestaakt. Het is niemand meer toegestaan om Miniworld te betreden."
