Hong Kong Palace Museum and the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan have begun discussions on co-curating exhibitions in late 2028, with plans to bring each other's collections to Hong Kong and Tashkent, according to Hong Kong Palace Museum director Louis Ng. Speaking during Chief Executive John Lee’s visit to Central Asia, Ng said the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday, covering cooperation in research, exhibitions, education and talent training. Ng added that preliminary talks on the exhibition exchange have already taken place. “We will bring collections from the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan to Hong Kong,” he said. “On the other hand, we will bring our collections from the Hong Kong Palace Museum – including our ancient gold artefacts and textiles – to exhibit here in Uzbekistan.” He said the timeline is still subject to further negotiations between the two museum teams and depends on their respective schedules, as well as any other exhibition commitments for the Uzbek artefacts. Ng described Uzbekistan as an ancient civilisation and a “cultural hub” along the historic Silk Road and said the collaboration aims to bring Central Asian history to Hong Kong audiences. “We hope to take this opportunity to present the history of Central Asia, the history of Uzbekistan and the history of the Silk Road through an exhibition in Hong Kong,” he said. He also emphasised that the initiative supports both the Belt and Road Initiative and Hong Kong’s development into a centre for Chinese and international cultural and artistic exchanges. He said this marks the first time a Hong Kong museum has cooperated with a Central Asian counterpart. “Central Asian museums don’t know much about Hong Kong’s museums either,” Ng said, adding that he has invited Uzbek museum directors to visit Hong Kong in the coming year to share experiences and expertise. “Together, we can advance the development of our respective cultural and museum sectors more prosperously,” Ng said. Uzbeks in the capital of Tashkent voiced enthusiasm about the prospect of closer ties with Hong Kong on Thursday. Earlier, the SAR and Uzbek governments had agreed to begin detailed talks on a 30-day visa-free stay for travellers on both sides. Currently, HKSAR passport holders may visit Uzbekistan visa-free for 10 days, while Uzbek passport holders require a visa to enter Hong Kong. Uzbek citizens told RTHK that the proposed arrangement, revealed by Chief Executive John Lee on Wednesday night during his Central Asia visit, would significantly ease current travel restrictions and that the news could not come soon enough. "It’s a big opportunity for our nation, for our population, for our locals," said Jasur Abdumavlonov, an English teacher in Tashkent. "China is the fastest developing country. It develops very fast." Abdumavlonov, who described himself as eager to learn, said he hopes to visit Hong Kong within the next five years, drawn by curiosity about its food and people. He predicted the visa-free scheme would spark a two-way exchange of traditions and world views. "A lot of people will exchange their traditions, their point of view," he said. "They’re going to learn a lot about Asia, about Central Asia. And our people will learn a lot about Chinese [people]." For younger Uzbeks, Hong Kong’s pop culture has already built a powerful pull. Yasmin Kholmurodova said she has wanted to visit the city for a long time, inspired by its cinema, books and music. "That’s great news. I wish to come to Hong Kong for a very long time," she said. Kholmurodova said that the more visa-free destinations available to Uzbek travellers, the better. She also added that the proposed deal would foster prosperity through greater people-to-people contact. "Let’s be friendly, let’s visit each other’s countries, let’s be more global," she said. "I think it will definitely be more prosperous." Beyond tourism, business ties are already emerging. Khurshid Shomurotov said his brother travelled to Hong Kong just 10 days ago to meet potential partners. He said he now plans to visit Hong Kong himself in the future, adding that business discussions with partners in the city had gone well. The chief executive said the two governments would promptly advance the specific implementation measures to bring the arrangement into effect as soon as possible. Edited by Tony Sabine
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers on Wednesday that Washington’s military campaign against Iran, codenamed “Operation Epic Fury”, had concluded and that any subsequent American military action would be defensive in nature rather than part of an ongoing offensive operation. Rubio made the remarks during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing when members of Congress questioned the administration’s assessment of the conflict and its aftermath. His comments came amid continuing concerns over regional security, the deployment of US forces across the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route through which a significant share of the world’s oil exports pass. During the hearing, Rubio announced, “We’re no longer conducting sustained strikes inside of Iran to degrade their military, because Epic Fury is over.” Later, he reiterated: “Epic Fury is over … that operation has concluded.” Rubio argued that the operation was a “victory” as Washington achieved its objectives by severely degrading Iran’s conventional military capabilities. According to the secretary, the United States had destroyed Iran’s defence industrial base, significantly reduced its missile launchers and drone stockpile, destroyed what remained of its air force and wiped out its conventional navy. “Those are all gone,” Rubio said. “So, I consider that victory, and we did, too. And that was the purpose of Epic Fury.” He also noted that despite the extensive damage inflicted by the United States and Israel, Iran retained some drone and maritime combat capabilities. Rubio’s comments prompted a sharp exchange with Democratic Representative Sara Jacobs, who questioned the administration’s assertion that the war was over while American troops remained deployed across the region and the Strait of Hormuz remained closed. Jacobs asked: “You can change the name of the operation, it doesn’t change the fact that the Strait’s still closed, and my service members and all of our service members are still in harm’s way.” She continued: “I’d like to talk about the war in Iran. Yesterday, in your testimony, you told Senator Booker that the war in Iran is over. This is news to me. It’s also news to my 2,500 constituents Marines, San Diego, Marines, in the Middle East, the other of my constituents who are deployed there and the thousands more of my constituents who have 48-hour deployment notices whose families are still very concerned.” Jacobs said she was willing to accept the secretary’s claim but still had a question for him: “Who won?” Responding, Rubio defended the administration’s definition of victory and said the operation had accomplished the goals set by Washington. “We’re no longer conducting sustained strikes inside of their military because Epic Fury is over. The second point, as on the question of who won, I can tell you this: we define victory. “We define victory as destroying their defence industrial base significantly, reducing the number of missile launchers that they possess significantly, reducing the stockpile of drones,” he added. “And we achieved all of those in addition to destroying what they had left of an Air Force and wiping out their entire conventional navy. Those are all gone, so I consider that victory and we did too, and that was the purpose of Epic [Fury]“ The lawmaker countered his argument, saying that, “You can change the name of the operation, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Strait of Hormuz is still closed and my service members and all of our service members are still in war.” In a further exchange during the hearing, Jacobs accused Rubio of failing to recognise that the administration was “losing this reckless war of choice”. She added a personal remark, saying: “And just like you couldn’t admit that the shoes the president bought you were too big, you clearly don’t know what winning means.” Secretary Rubio appeared momentarily confused by the reference and responded with frustration: “I don’t know what shoes she’s talking about… They’re some Florsheim’s. They’re actually pretty good. They fit fine.” Jacobs then challenged the administration’s claims regarding Iran’s military capabilities, citing intelligence assessments. “Our intelligence community has said that Iran is reconstituting its military industrial base faster than we had predicted,“ she said. “Analysts assess it still holds roughly 70% of its missile stockpile and 70% of its mobile launchers,” said the lawmaker. Jacobs further argued that the strategic situation had deteriorated since the conflict began. “The Strait of Hormuz was open before the war, it is now closed…” Secretary Rubio pushed back on her assertions, disputing the basis of the intelligence being referenced. “Well, first of all, I don’t know what intelligence assessments you’re referring to.” “We wouldn’t discuss intelligence assessments if they were real.” The exchange highlighted the continuing debate in Washington over the consequences of the conflict with Iran. While the administration maintains that the operation successfully achieved its military objectives and has now ended, critics argue that threats to US forces and instability in the Gulf region persist despite the cessation of large-scale American strikes. Rubio’s remarks nevertheless marked the clearest public declaration by the administration to date that the military phase of “Epic Fury” has concluded and that the United States no longer considers itself engaged in an offensive campaign against Iran. Political aims, diplomacy debate Rubio also told lawmakers that while the administration would welcome political change in Iran, it was not the objective of the US military mission. “We would love to see a change in Iran and that they be governed by people,” Rubio told the Committee after Republican Congressman Michael McCaul expressed hopes for a “free Iran”. However, he stressed: “That was not the goal of our mission,” adding that the objective was to deprive Tehran of the ability to threaten the region with missiles, drones and a potential nuclear weapons capability. “The goal of our mission was to take away their ability to threaten the region with an overwhelming number of missiles and drones,” he said, adding that the US had to prevent Iran from “break[ing] out to a nuclear weapon.” The hearing also featured sharp criticism from Democrats. Representative Gregory Meeks, the ranking member of the committee, accused the Trump administration of abandoning diplomacy and escalating regional conflict. In prepared remarks, Meeks said President Trump had promised Americans “no new wars — only to send a new generation of troops back to the Middle East.” He argued that the administration had “traded dialogue for bombs yet again” and claimed that “America First” had left the United States isolated. “The record says otherwise on all three,” Meeks said, referring to Rubio’s pledge to make America “safer, stronger, and more prosperous”. He added that Americans were “not safer while fighting an unnecessary war” and “not more prosperous when this administration has done everything it can to enrich the president and his allies, while everyday Americans struggle to afford groceries, gas, and healthcare”.
“As a government, we remain deeply committed to consolidating on these achievements while continuing to align our local governance priorities with the broader developmental vision of the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for a greater and more prosperous Enugu State,” the Chairman, Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, says. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that Youm-i-Takbeer stands as a defining moment in Pakistan’s history when the nation demonstrated unwavering resolve, unity and courage by emerging as a nuclear power and restoring the strategic balance in South Asia. Youm-i-Takbeer marks the historic day of May 28, 1998 when Pakistan joined the ranks of nuclear powers after atomic tests in the hills of Chagai, Balochistan. In his message, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan conducted successful nuclear tests on May 28, 1998 in response to India’s nuclear explosions, sending a clear message to the world that the country would never compromise on its defence and sovereignty. He said the day bears testimony that the defence of Pakistan remained in strong and capable hands. He also paid tribute to all those who contributed to Pakistan’s nuclear programme, including former prime ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. He also acknowledged the services of national heroes Abdul Qadeer Khan and Samar Mubarakmand, along with scientists, engineers, experts, armed forces personnel and workers who played a historic role in making Pakistan’s defence impregnable. The prime minister said India carried out nuclear tests driven by militaristic ambitions and expansionist designs, while Pakistan responded with wisdom and determination to foil hostile intentions. He noted that despite international pressure, economic threats and financial inducements, then-prime minister Nawaz refused to compromise on the country’s independence and security. PM Shehbaz said that Youm-i-Takbeer symbolised national dignity, sacrifice, unity and an unshakeable commitment to the defence of the homeland. He said Pakistan’s nuclear capability and the preparedness of its armed forces remained a decisive deterrent against enemy aggression. Referring to recent tensions with India, the prime minister said, Pakistan had demonstrated its resolve by delivering a befitting response to aggression during Marka-i-Haq. He said that India had staged a false flag operation in occupied Kashmir’s Pahalgam, targeting Pakistani civilians and mosques under that pretext. He said that Pakistan’s armed forces and nation stood united like Bunyanun Marsoos to thwart enemy designs and challenge its perceived military superiority. PM Shehbaz also praised the leadership of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, stating that the armed forces displayed exceptional professionalism under his command. He also commended Chief of Air Staff Zaheer Ahmad Babar and Chief of Naval Staff Naveed Ashraf for their exemplary performance. The prime minister said Pakistan has no aggressive intentions against any country but retained the full right to defend itself. He warned that after facing setbacks in direct confrontation, hostile forces were now attempting to undermine Pakistan’s security through proxy elements, including Fitna al Khawarij and Fitna al Hindustan. Fitna al Khawarij is a term the state uses for terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, while Fitna al Hindustan is a term designated by the state for terrorist organisations in Balochistan. PM Shehbaz said Pakistan remained determined to eliminate all such threats and their facilitators through continued operations, including Operation Bunyanun Marsoos and Operation Ghazab lil-Haq. He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s armed forces were fully prepared and equipped with modern capabilities to defend every inch of the motherland. He urged the nation to renew its pledge for unity, stability, peace and progress and to continue working collectively for a strong, prosperous and dignified Pakistan. ‘Defining moment in Pakistan’s history’ Separately, President Asif Ali Zardari said that Youm-i-Takbeer marked a defining moment in the country’s history, describing May 28, 1998 as the day Pakistan attained strategic sovereignty and ensured an impregnable defence of its independence and territorial integrity through successful nuclear tests at Chagai. In his message, the president said the nuclear tests conducted 28 years ago established Pakistan’s deterrence capability and made the country the seventh nuclear power in the world. He said Pakistans nuclear programme was initiated in response to India’s nuclear ambitions and regional security challenges. President Zardari said successive Pakistani governments had faced international pressure, sanctions and other challenges aimed at deterring the country from pursuing its strategic programme, but Pakistan remained steadfast in protecting its sovereignty and national security interests. Paying tribute to the scientists, engineers and armed forces, he said their dedication, professionalism and patriotism enabled Pakistan to achieve a historic milestone. He also acknowledged the role of national leadership and institutions in strengthening the countrys strategic capabilities. Referring to the events of May 1998, the president said India’s second nuclear tests posed a grave challenge to Pakistan’s security, prompting the countrys political and military leadership to take what he termed a decisive step in line with national aspirations and interests. Despite economic sanctions, threats and international pressure, Pakistan conducted its nuclear tests on May 28, 1998, thereby restoring the balance of power in South Asia, he added. The president said the achievement reflected national unity and collective resolve in defending the country’s independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty. He described Pakistan’s nuclear capability as one of the nations most valuable assets and a trust representing the aspirations of the people. Highlighting evolving security challenges, President Zardari said modern warfare increasingly involved cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence, drones and other advanced technologies alongside nuclear deterrence. He said Pakistans armed forces had equipped themselves with expertise in these domains and demonstrated professional excellence during Marka-i-Haq last year. He reiterated that Pakistan was a responsible and peace-loving nation that respected international laws and norms, while reserving the right to self-defence under the United Nations Charter. Referring to Operation Bunyanun Marsoos, the president said Pakistan had responded effectively to Indian aggression last year, attributing the success to national unity and the professionalism of the armed forces. President Zardari said Youm-i-Takbeer also served as a reminder of the nations commitment to safeguarding the motherland against all threats. He expressed confidence in Pakistan’s ability to meet future challenges through self-reliance, innovation and professional excellence. Armed forces reaffirm unwavering resolve to defend Pakistan against all threats In a statement released by Inter-Services Public Relations, CDF Munir and the naval and air chiefs said that Youm-i-Takbeer commemorated the historic achievement of when Pakistan emerged as a nuclear power and restored the strategic balance in South Asia. “This defining milestone symbolises the nation’s unity, resilience and unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty, territorial integrity and national honour,” they said. “This historic achievement is a testament to the visionary leadership, remarkable contributions of our scientists and engineers, and the sacrifices of the armed forces and the people of Pakistan. Pakistan’s strategic capability remains a sacred national trust and a guarantor of peace, stability, territorial integrity and credible deterrence in the region,” they said. They added that the armed forces reaffirmed their unwavering resolve to defend the motherland against all threats and remain committed to ensuring the security, stability and prosperity of the nation. “On this momentous occasion, bowing in humility to the Almighty, Pakistani nation renews its pledge of unity, vigilance, resilience, and dedication for a stronger and prosperous Pakistan,” the statement concluded.
