The Swiss director has staged court cases against Pussy Riot, mining companies in Congo and Gisèle Pelicot’s abusers. But after his invitation to Palantir founder Peter Thiel caused a row in Vienna, is Rau’s method eating itself? Milo Rau, once the enfant terrible of continental European theatre, is a little less buoyant these days. The Swiss theatre-maker has done something he says he explicitly hates: he has cancelled a guest. “Yes, we hit a wall,” he says. “But at least it made the wall visible.” In his capacity as the artistic director of the Wiener Festwochen theatre festival, Rau, at the end of last month, first invited, then disinvited, the American tech billionaire Peter Thiel. The Austrian weekly Falter called it a fiasco. Continue reading...

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and local partners have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the development of a maritime business district on prime Karachi Port Trust’s (KPT) waterfront land, the maritime affairs ministry said on Saturday. In a statement, Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the MoU was signed between KPT, Saudi Business Council–Najd Gateway Holding Company, Arif Habib Dolmen REIT Management Limited (AHDRML), and the Pakistan Corporate Consortium. The proposed project would be built on a 140‑acre KPT site on Karachi’s MT Khan Road and is intended to transform the area into a major commercial and maritime hub, the minister said. The development is envisaged to include modern commercial infrastructure aimed at attracting investment, generating employment, and supporting urban development, he added. “This strategic collaboration is a transformative opportunity to unlock the full potential of KPT’s waterfront assets and position Pakistan as a regional hub for maritime commerce and investment,” Chaudhry was quoted as saying. The minister affirmed that all regulatory and legal requirements under the Pakistani law would be met before the project proceeds. Members of the Saudi delegation showed keen interest in broader cooperation in the maritime sector, including potential involvement in port infrastructure and related projects, he added. The minister noted that the visit was part of wider efforts by Islamabad and Riyadh to deepen economic ties and explore investment opportunities in ports, logistics, infrastructure and trade facilitation. “Subject to regulatory approvals, the development could become one of the largest waterfront commercial projects in the region,” the minister added. In November last year, the ministry had invited proposals from the business community for the development of 140 acres of KPT land, proposing a joint venture model where the port acts as a strategic partner to establish an industrial park. Chaudhry had also said the government planned to expand the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation’s (PNSC) fleet by 50 per cent. He said the PNSC’s target of 30 vessels, initially planned for three years, should now be achieved within a year.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday invited Saudi investors to participate in the construction of the long-awaited Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway (M6) and two other major highway projects, as Islamabad sought to attract foreign capital into its expanding transport infrastructure sector. Once completed, the motorway is expected to provide uninterrupted motorway connectivity from Karachi Port to Peshawar and onward to Gilgit. The offer was extended by Federal Communications Minister Aleem Khan during a meeting with the Chairman of the Saudi-Pakistan Joint Business Council, Prince Mansour bin Muhammad Al Saud, who held high-level talks with the minister on promoting bilateral economic cooperation and investment. According to the Ministry of Communications, Aleem Khan presented investment opportunities in three strategic road projects: the M6 Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway, the M10 Karachi Port and the M13 Kharian-Rawalpindi motorways. The minister described the projects as commercially attractive ventures with strong potential for long-term returns. Karachi Port and M-6 among three key projects highlighted to attract foreign capital The outreach comes as Pakistan accelerates efforts to develop its road infrastructure and secure private-sector participation in large-scale transport projects. In April, the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an agreement for the construction of two sections of the M6 Motorway, a project regarded as a critical component of the country’s north-south transport corridor. Missing link At the time, Mr Khan termed the agreement a significant milestone, saying the motorway project, which had remained unrealised for nearly three decades, was expected to move forward within two years. He described the M6 as the missing link in the Karachi-Sukkur corridor and a project of considerable economic importance. The 306-kilometre, six-lane motorway will include 15 interchanges and 10 service areas. It is the only remaining missing segment in the motorway network connecting Karachi and Peshawar. During Friday’s discussions, the minister formally invited the Saudi Business Council (SBC) to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan’s transport infrastructure, particularly in motorway development and related connectivity projects. He said the proposed routes offered strong commercial prospects and could generate attractive returns for investors due to their strategic location and economic significance. Business councils The minister assured the Saudi delegation that investors would be offered commercially viable investment models and noted that the expansion of Pakistan’s road network was playing a key role in facilitating trade and economic activity across the region. Both sides also reaffirmed the importance of strengthening economic cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia through institutional platforms such as the Saudi-Pakistan Business Council. Prince Mansour expressed the SBC’s interest in examining partnership opportunities in the motorway schemes, saying the council was well positioned to collaborate in Pakistan’s communications and infrastructure sectors.
