Hong Kong police have arrested a 69-year-old taxi driver after he allegedly knocked down and killed a 34-year-old woman in a shopping district in the early hours of Saturday. The incident happened at around 2.12am near Park Lane Shopper’s Boulevard in Tsim Sha Tsui. The taxi driver was travelling along Nathan Road towards Mong Kok when he struck the 34-year-old woman as she was crossing Granville Road. The woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed unconscious to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in...
A former assistant director at the Observatory said the El Nino effect will bring fewer but stronger typhoons to Hong Kong this summer. He was speaking after the Observatory predicted that Hong Kong would see four to seven typhoons near the territory this year. Speaking after attending a radio programme on Saturday, Leung Wing-mo, a spokesman for the Meteorological Society, said El Nino increases sea surface temperatures in the eastern part of the equatorial Pacific while Hong Kong is located in the west. "When the pool of warm water shifts to the east, most of the tropical cyclones will develop in the east, which is further away from Hong Kong," he said. "So since the distance of the origin of the typhoons in Hong Kong increases, the chances of the typhoons coming very close to Hong Kong decrease as a result. "But if a typhoon comes close to Hong Kong, then it has a longer time and longer sea track for development. "There is a chance that the typhoons which eventually come close to Hong Kong would be a very strong typhoon, maybe a super typhoon." Leung also said El Nino would bring hot weather to Hong Kong, as well as the entire planet, due to the close interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean. He called on people to pay attention to their health condition, as extreme hot weather can trigger pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Edited by Robert Kemp
Hong Kong is experiencing a rise in seasonal influenza cases, particularly among children and the elderly, as waning vaccine protection weakens community immunity, a leading infectious disease expert has warned. Professor Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, chair professor of infectious diseases at the University of Hong Kong, issued the warning on Saturday and urged high-risk groups who have not received a seasonal flu jab to get vaccinated. The remarks came a day after health authorities said an influenza B...
Australian lawyer Samuel Monkivitch has received a fine and suspended 18-month jail term after pleading guilty to charges relating to a dine-and-dash spree across the territory. Monkivitch appeared on Friday at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts after dining at five-star hotels in Hong Kong without paying. He was previously fined HK$3,000 over similar charges. In the […]
An expert on infectious diseases called on the public on Saturday to get vaccinated against influenza before the current batch of available jabs expires at the end of this month, as cases are on the rise. A recent serious case involved a 17-year-old who was left in a critical condition yesterday after developing complications, including severe pneumonia and shock from catching influenza B. He was not inoculated against the flu. Speaking on a Commercial Radio programme, Professor Ivan Hung, head of the infectious diseases division at the University of Hong Kong and an honorary consultant at Queen Mary Hospital , said the hospital has also logged more flu cases among children and the elderly. “Right now we're seeing a rise in the number of cases in both flu A, which is [subtype] H3, and also flu B, with quite a number of older adults being admitted to hospitals with severe flu cases, and also for children as well. Recently, we have had a 17-year-old with a severe flu B infection,” he said after the show. “But whether it's peaking – it's not yet the so-called summer peak – I think we really have to wait for a few more weeks to see how the trend plays out. "I do recommend anyone who has not been vaccinated to get vaccinated before the end of June because the vaccine is going to expire by the end of June.” Hung urged the elderly, particularly those with chronic diseases, to wear masks in crowded places and use hand sanitisers. People do not have to be too worried over Covid-19, he said, adding that it has become endemic in the city. “I think the coronavirus itself is relatively benign. If you look at the variant, the latest is NB.1.8.1, it’s actually quite close to the LP.8.1, which is the vaccine candidate," Hung said. "Basically, I think it’s not a major concern in terms of coronavirus. “Overall, we have very, very few severe cases being hospitalised. For the last year or so, we didn’t really have a surge in Covid cases. In general, it’s very mild, even for the older adults.” However, those who are immunodeficient and suffer from chronic illnesses should get vaccinated regularly, Hung said, urging those who have not been inoculated against flu to take the jab without delay, as vaccines won’t be available for a short period until the next batch arrives in the fourth quarter. Baby Danny’s future remains uncertain despite having almost completed his birth registration in Hong Kong, as welfare authorities still had to assess the capability of his parents, who were earlier arrested for suspected child neglect and have a troubled parental history. Danny’s welfare sparked public concern over the past week after Tsang Wai-bong and Kwan Pui-sin, who initially declined a DNA test for their home-born son’s birth registration on religious and privacy grounds. They only made a...
Though Hong Kong has overtaken Switzerland as the number one in cross-border wealth management, rather than enter panic mode, Swiss banks seem unruffled — feeling it bolsters the case against looming tighter banking regulations. Hong Kong is now the world’s largest cross-border booking centre thanks to inflows from mainland China, strong initial public offering activity, […]
Hongkongers sweated through the hottest day of the year on Friday, with the Observatory (HKO) recording a maximum temperature of 34.6 degrees Celsius at its headquarters. The mercury neared 37 degrees Celsius in the northern part of the territory. Meanwhile, the Observatory noted 1,263 instances of cloud-to-ground lightening on Friday, and 4,859 cases of cloud-to-cloud […]
The Hong Kong Observatory issued an amber rainstorm warning on Saturday morning as thundery showers and strong gusts swept across the city, following the hottest day of the year so far. The amber alert, the lowest in a three-tier rainstorm warning system, was issued at 10am. It indicates that more than 30mm (1.2 inches) of rain has fallen or is expected to fall within an hour across Hong Kong. “A broad trough of low pressure is bringing showers and thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong,” the...
Carnival Splendor passengers reportedly received a notice to avoid bikinis, G-strings, thongs and monokinis during a stop in Lifou, New Caledonia, respecting local customs.
Weeks before mainland Chinese student Carol Chen graduated from Baptist University in Hong Kong in July, the 22-year-old did the math and weighed the cost of living in the city against returning home. Renting a room in the city would consume around half of the HK$20,000 (US$2,552) starting salary she expected as a junior data analyst. “If I go back to Shanghai, I will only need to worry about daily expenses,” said Chen, a maths and statistics graduate. Language barriers compounded the problem....
The Hong Kong parents of undocumented baby Danny have expressed confidence that they can obtain legal guardianship of their son, who is now in a care home, as immigration authorities could process his birth certificate as early as Saturday. The unmarried couple also said they saw a “glimmer of hope” in resolving the custody case of their four-year-old daughter Lily, whom Swedish authorities have taken into care over child welfare concerns. “We believe the social workers will handle the matter in...

Police said officers intercepted the suspect at the boundary checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The victim, 17, is understood to be a Form Three student. The incident took place at around noon on Friday as the KMB bus was stopping near an intersection of Mong...
Police have arrested a 65-year-old man on suspicion of indecent assault. The case came to light after a video taken by a pedestrian and circulating on social media purportedly showed a bus passenger touching a female passenger who was sitting in front of him on board a double-decker bus in Mong Kok. Officers said the suspect had left Hong Kong briefly following the alleged indecent assault. He was apprehended on Friday night at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge checkpoint when he returned to the city. Edited by Edmond Fong
Hong Kong serves as an ideal platform to help Uzbek enterprises expand through its world-class professional services and international business environment, the city’s leader has told the Central Asian country’s prime minister as he wrapped up a five-day regional tour. Sources said Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Friday also invited Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov to be a keynote speaker at the coming Belt and Road Summit to be held in Hong Kong in September. It was understood that during a...
Rick Wilking/Reuters
Chief Executive John Lee on Friday expressed confidence that Hong Kong and Uzbekistan will further advance their "win-win cooperation" as he concluded his week-long Central Asia trip. Speaking on the final day of his visit to the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, Lee described his trip to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as fruitful, noting achievements have been secured in eight areas. These include the establishment of high-level contacts and ties between the SAR government and the governments of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with the respective sides reaching consensus on cooperation across multiple areas, he said. Lee added that a total of 96 cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding, involving investments exceeding US$1.65 billion, had been reached during his visit. Before returning to Hong Kong on Friday night, Lee attended a business exchange event and met again with the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Abdulla Aripov. Lee said he looked forward to strengthening co-operation between the two places and laying a solid foundation in areas that include capital markets connectivity, infrastructure financing and green finance. The CE thanked the government of Uzbekistan for making arrangements for his visit, saying he was confident that the two places would open up a new chapter of mutual benefits and win-win cooperation. Earlier in the day, Lee attended a luncheon hosted by the Chinese Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Yu Jun. There, he expressed gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for its continued support and for making arrangements for the visit. Lee also visited the Center for Islamic Civilization – the country’s largest cultural, scientific, and educational complex – to learn about local efforts in cultural preservation, academic research and education promotion. During the visit, he noted that Hong Kong and Uzbekistan could further strengthen cooperation in arts and culture, people-to-people exchanges and museum collaboration. Edited by Edmond Fong
