Os passageiros foram evacuados em Tenerife, no arquipélago espanhol das Ilhas Canárias, antes de serem repatriados de avião para seus respectivos países. O navio, que navega sob bandeira holandesa, concluiu posteriormente sua viagem em 18 de maio em Roterdã, o maior porto da Europa, onde o restante da tripulação foi colocado em quarentena. Three passengers died following a hantavirus outbreak on board the polar expedition ship MV Hondius.
Het door het hantavirus getroffen Nederlandse cruiseschip Hondius mag terug de vaart in. Dat heeft de GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond beoordeeld na een laatste controle van het vaartuig, die vrijdag plaatsvond. Volgens de gezondheidsdienst is de Hondius helemaal gereinigd en gedesinfecteerd. Daarmee kan de Hondius over twee weken aan een nieuwe reis beginnen. Het cruiseschip zou op 16 juni vanuit Vlissingen vertrekken. Dat gebeurt nu vanuit Rotterdam, zo laat een woordvoerder van eigenaar Oceanwide Expeditions weten. Eigenlijk had de Hondius afgelopen week al moeten terugvaren naar de thuishaven in Vlissingen. Dat moest worden uitgesteld omdat de GGD oordeelde dat het schip nog een extra keer moest worden gereinigd. Hantavirus De Hondius werd begin deze maand getroffen door een uitbraak van het hantavirus. Het schip was toen onderweg van Argentinië naar de Canarische Eilanden. Uit voorzorg lag het vaartuig dagen voor de kust van Kaapverdië, om vervolgens door te varen naar Tenerife. Vanaf het eiland werden gasten teruggevlogen naar hun thuislanden. Twee weken geleden kwam het schip, met enkel nog bemanningsleden aan boord, aan in Rotterdam. In totaal zijn drie mensen overleden aan de gevolgen van het hantavirus. De Nederlandse bemanning zit thuis in quarantaine, meldt Oceanwide Expeditions. Een woordvoerder kon niet zeggen of mensen die voor komende reizen hebben geboekt zich zorgen maken over hun reis met de Hondius. Signalen dat passagiers voor de aankomende reis zijn gaan twijfelen zijn er vooralsnog niet, zegt zij. Cruiseschip Hondius kwam twee weken geleden aan in de haven van Rotterdam:
