Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday hailed the “true and special relationship” between Pakistan and the United States, which has spanned nearly eight decades and covers bilateral interests in security, counter-terrorism, energy and science, among other fields. Addressing an event marking the US 250th anniversary, PM Shehbaz noted that Islamabad and Washington had “worked closely at the most consequential moments of our history, whether it be the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s or the global war on terror from 2001–2021”. “Last year, following India’s unprovoked aggression after the Pahalgam incident, it was President [Donald] Trump’s timely and most decisive intervention that resulted in a ceasefire between Pakistan and India on May 10, last year,” he said, referring to a brief four-day war between the nuclear-armed neighbours. “We shall forever remain grateful to President Trump for restoring peace in South Asia and saving millions of people. In this context, he will always be remembered as a man of peace.” Recalling the relationship between Islamabad and Washington, PM Shehbaz noted that the US was among the first countries to recognise Pakistan, when then-US president Harry Truman sent a congratulatory letter to Quaid-i-Azam. “Ours is a true and special relationship, spanning over nearly eight decades and encompassing cooperation not only in security and counter-terrorism, but equally so in trade, investment, agriculture, science, education, health, energy and people-to-people exchanges,” the premier said. Veteran stage actor and director Chung King-fai on Wednesday passed away in his sleep at the age of 89. Affectionately known as "King Sir", Chung was the founding Dean of the School of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and is best remembered for being a mentor to generations of performers. In a career spanning decades, he worked as an actor, director, drama educator, television producer, host and voice-over artist. On social media, Chung's nephew, Chung Chi-kuen, wrote that he dedicated his entire life to theatre, nurturing countless students and earning deep respect and love from everyone. Former RTHK programme host Serina Ha, who knew Chung for more than 20 years, described him as steady and graceful, and someone who took his work very seriously. "He's a gentleman. Very polite and genuine. Among all the people I know, he is a mentor who truly connected with the times. He gave me the kind of guidance that a senior should. And his attitude – his seriousness – that is something worth learning from," she said. Chung held a bachelor's degree in speech and drama from Oklahoma Baptist University in the United States and and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University. A pioneer in staging Cantonese versions of absurdist dramas and Broadway musicals, he won Best Actor eight times and Best Director four times at the Hong Kong Drama Awards, along with many other accolades throughout his career. In addition to the Academy for Performing Arts, he lectured at Hong Kong Baptist University for 23 years and worked in various local television outlets. In a statement, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law expressed her condolences to Chung's family, saying he dedicated his life to the performing arts with countless productions and contributions to Hong Kong theatre. "His passing is a tremendous loss to Hong Kong's performing arts sector. We will always treasure the memory of this stage veteran and remain deeply grateful for his distinguished contributions to the performing arts in Hong Kong," she said. Edited by Edmond Fong

United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Saturday said Washington and Islamabad were developing a “true friendship” as he lauded Pakistan’s role in the ongoing US-Iran peace negotiations. With Pakistan acting as the official interlocutor between Washington and Tehran in the ongoing peace negotiations that resulted in the April 8 US-Iran ceasefire, Trump and his top officials have hailed Pakistan’s role several times. At the three-day Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Hegseth was reminded of former director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s remarks about Pakistan’s future missile capabilities potentially posing a threat to the US and was asked whether India’s Agni-VI missile programme posed a similar threat. The question was posed after Hegseth, in his speech, had lauded US defence cooperation with Indo-Pacific and Southeast Asian countries, as well as India, which he termed a “critical anchor to hold the line”. “I mentioned India here, but I very easily could have mentioned Pakistan and the role that the field marshal and the prime minister are playing in peace negotiations,” Hegseth replied, praising PM Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. “I think an unexpected development and a true friendship [is] developing there, which I think is important,” he added. Noting that both India and Pakistan were nuclear-capable countries, Hegseth said, “I think both sides are going to see understandable threats coming from the other, maybe some of which we see differently, and countries are going to want to develop ICBM threats.” However, he added, “But we’re not pointing fingers, at least from our view, right now, at either country and calling them a threat to us.” The defense secretary further said that the US was “grateful for, in each of their lanes, the benefits they’ve given to peace around the world”. Hegseth also reiterated Washington and Islamabad’s stance that President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire between Pakistan and India during the May 2025 conflict — a narrative that India’s PM Narendra Modi has denied, irking Trump. The US president has lauded PM Shehbaz and CDF Munir on multiple occasions, calling the prime minister “great” and the military chief “fantastic” last month. In February, at the inaugural meeting of the US-led Board of Peace, Trump had praised Shehbaz and described the field marshal as a “tough man” and a “serious fighter”. The US president has even referred to the army chief as “my favourite field marshal”. In November 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US saw an opportunity to expand its strategic relationship with Pakistan and that the recent strengthening of ties between the two countries did not come at the expense of Washington’s relationship with New Delhi.
