"Enquanto mantemos firme nosso apoio à Ucrânia, (o presidente Vladimir) Putin está recuando no campo de batalha," disse Anne Keast-Butler. Outras estimativas também já deram conta de centenas de milhares de baixas nos quadros militares russos, enquanto o confronto do Kremlin com o país vizinho já está no quinto ano. Em janeiro, um estudo do think tank americano Centro para Estudos Estratégicos e Internacionais (CSIS, na sigla em inglês) estimou em 1,2 milhão a soma de mortos, feridos ou desaparecidos no lado russo. Do total, 325 mil teriam morrido até então, superando as baixas militares sofridas por uma grande potência em qualquer outro confronto desde a Segunda Guerra Mundial. A Rússia refutou os dados.
