The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission on Friday announced the end of election campaigning 48 hours before polling day, prohibiting all election-related activities in the region, according to a press release. The general elections for the GB’s legislative assembly are scheduled on June 7, after a four-month delay. “The commission informs the public, political parties, candidates and their supporters that under Section 182 of the Elections Act 2017 and the Code of Conduct, no election-related activities will be allowed during the 48 hours preceding polling,” said the statement by the commission’s public affairs wing. According to the law, no person would be permitted to organise, attend, promote or support any public meeting, rally, procession or gathering within the relevant constituency during this period, the statement added. “In this regard, a complete ban on all election activities will come into effect from 12 midnight on June 5, 2026,” the press release said. It further said that, following the enforcement of the ban, “holding or participating in election rallies, corner meetings, processions, campaign activities, the use of loudspeakers, or any form of canvassing” aimed at influencing voters would be “strictly prohibited”. “The commission has directed all political parties, candidates, election agents and workers to ensure full compliance with election laws and the code of conduct. In case of violations, action will be taken under the Elections Act 2017 and other relevant laws,” it cautioned. The statement further said that the election commission was making all necessary arrangements for the conduct of “peaceful, free, fair and transparent elections” and had appealed to the public to play a positive role in ensuring compliance with the law. ‘All arrangements finalised’ Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan on Friday assured that all arrangements had been finalised for the June 7 elections, with strict security measures in place to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling. Speaking to PTV News, Khan said the entire region was under strict security arrangements ahead of Sunday’s elections, adding that all necessary measures had been taken to ensure peaceful and smooth polling across constituencies. He added that election campaigning had ended peacefully. “Strict action will be taken against any violation of the election code of conduct,” he warned, urging political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the code to maintain discipline and ensure free, fair and transparent elections. Meanwhile, returning officer for constituency GBA-12 (Shigar), Faisal Hayat, said voters were actively participating in the electoral process, reflecting strong public engagement across the constituency. “Transport facilities have been arranged for polling day, while sensitive locations have been clearly identified to ensure effective monitoring and response,” Hayat said. He added that the security deployment had been divided across three key points in the constituency, with around 120 personnel assigned to maintain order and safeguard the electoral process in Shigar. “A policy of zero tolerance will be enforced to ensure peaceful elections,” he said, urging all stakeholders to extend their cooperation for the smooth conduct of the polling process. Soon after the announcement of the election schedule, political parties, including the PML-N, PPP and PTI, began their election campaigns, holding public rallies, corner meetings and region-wide engagements. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and First Lady Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari led their party’s campaign, vowing to ensure the constitutional rights of the region and to bring wide-ranging development projects based on public-private partnerships. Former prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif also paid a one-day visit to the region, along with several party leaders, to address a public gathering and meet ticket-holders. Meanwhile, the PTI, the main opposition party at the Centre, alleged unlawful and discriminatory treatment by the administration, claiming that several of its leaders had been expelled from the region, while others were denied entry. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, along with several other leaders, has been leading the campaign while also complaining about an “uneven playing field”.

The family of a Nepali climber who dragged himself off Mount Everest six days after being abandoned called for an investigation into rescue efforts, as doctors said on Friday he is in a stable condition and recovering in hospital. Mountaineer Dawa Sherpa, 57, vanished in bitter conditions on the upper reaches of the world’s highest mountain early on May 30. His family thought he was dead and had even begun ritual mourning prayers. He was found crawling towards Base Camp on Thursday morning by the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC), a Nepali team that helps set routes on Everest and clean up waste left behind. Dawa Sherpa, also known as “Hillary” after the famed climber Edmund Hillary, was flown to the capital Kathmandu, where he is being treated for frostbite on his fingers, a fractured thigh bone and severe dehydration, doctors said. “His clinical condition remains stable, and his dehydration is showing significant improvement,” said Jyotindra Sharma, director of the HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu. He said Dawa Sherpa had survived “extremely challenging conditions” on Everest. “He will remain in the [intensive care unit] for a few more days for ongoing care and observation,” Sharma said in a statement. His remarkable survival was greeted with jubilation by his family, who also said they were angry at what they described as the failure of rescue teams to locate him earlier. His wife, Damu Sherpa, told AFP of her joy when she was sent a photograph as he was flown to the capital. “I do not remember how this week went — we thought he was no more, and had already begun his last rites,” she said as she waited to meet him outside the hospital’s ICU. “I was so surprised when I saw the photos and recognised him — he was still wearing a cap I knitted for him.” ‘Angry’ The climb was one of the last of the season, meaning that there were few other mountaineers on the peak. His wife accused the expedition company of failing to deploy search teams in time. “There should be some investigation against the company — they delayed search and rescue for him,” she said. Karma Gyalje Sherpa, a relative who is also an Everest guide, questioned whether more action would have been taken sooner if a high-paying foreigner had been lost on the icy peak. “It is a miracle that he survived in that environment, without eating properly for six days,” he told AFP while waiting at the hospital. “The situation does make me feel angry,” he said. “We don’t know, but if he were a foreigner, maybe the response would be different?” Everest guide Rinji Sherpa, from the same village as Dawa Sherpa, said he was a man who knew the dangers of the mountains well and would do all he could to support his clients. “He is very loyal to his clients, and diligent with making sure he performs his responsibility,” he said. “He is very lucky, he has had several close calls before — but he has survived.” At least five people have died this season — two Indians and three Nepali climbers — on Everest expeditions. More than 1,000 climbers reached the summit of Everest this season, according to initial tallies by Nepali officials, making it the busiest on record.

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the “Shanghai spirit” and called for a joint strategy among SCO member states to counter terrorism, organised crime, drug trafficking, cybercrime and terror financing. Naqvi said this at a special meeting of the Ministers of Interior and Public Security of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He said the region faced “serious and complex security challenges” that were interconnected, noting that criminal and terrorist networks were rapidly adapting to technological advancements, exploiting artificial intelligence, digital platforms, online networks and cryptocurrency transactions to expand their activities. The interior minister emphasised the importance of modernising institutional coordination and enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms across the region to tackle these threats. Shared threats demanded shared solutions, Naqvi told the delegates, further calling for a comprehensive regional strategy to tackle transnational crime and emerging security risks. Highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the SCO, he said: “Pakistan fully adheres to the principles of the Shanghai Spirit, which is based on mutual trust, equality, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty.” Naqvi further stated that Pakistan had rendered “unparalleled sacrifices” against terrorism and continued to strengthen its security architecture to address evolving threats. Under the National Action Plan, he said, Pakistan had strengthened intelligence coordination, border management and anti-money laundering measures. “These initiatives have significantly strengthened the country’s capacity to combat terrorism and organised crime.” He called for more effective cooperation under SCO’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) for intelligence sharing, joint threat analysis and countering online radicalisation and extremist propaganda. Pakistan, he said, fully supported workshops and expert exchange programmes building collective capabilities. Turning his attention to cybersecurity, he said cyber intelligence and digital forensics cooperation were “the need of the hour” and noted that technological advances had created new opportunities for criminal organisations and terrorist groups. On the issue of narcotics trafficking, he warned that the illegal drug trade remained a major source of terror financing. He called for a coordinated joint strategy against drug trafficking networks, online criminal operations and illicit financial flows facilitated through digital currencies. Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force, he said, remained actively engaged in SCO-led counter-narcotics initiatives and stood ready to deepen cooperation with partner countries. He said border security was key to regional peace and stability and stressed greater cooperation on preventing the use of forged documents for travelling, watch-list coordination and human smuggling. He also said that stopping terror financing was among Pakistan’s key priorities, adding that the country had reformed its anti-money laundering (AML) regime and that the country’s enhanced financial monitoring framework was playing “an active role” in detecting and preventing illicit financial activities. Moreover, strong regional cooperation was indispensable for dismantling terror financing networks, he said, emphasising that no country could effectively confront transnational threats in isolation. “Our challenges are common, so our efforts must also be collective and coordinated,” Naqvi said. “The common goal of our joint efforts is a peaceful and secure SCO region.” Concluding his address, Naqvi said that Pakistan looked forward to welcoming participants at the SCO summit to be held in Islamabad in 2027. A day earlier, Naqvi met his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, on sidelines of the SCO moot and the two discussed bilateral relations and the current regional situation. Both ministers also exchanged views on Pakistan-Iran relations and the latest regional situation.
