Nederland, België en Luxemburg komen "vrij snel" met ideeën over hoe de EU-uitbreiding verbeterd kan worden. Dat zei premier Jetten bij aankomst in Montenegro, waar hij een top bijwoont met landen van de Westelijke Balkan over uitbreiding van de Unie. Behalve het gastland willen Albanië, Bosnië en Herzegovina, Noord-Macedonië, Servië en Kosovo graag lid worden, maar de onderhandelingen verlopen moeizaam. Met de toetreding tot de EU zijn de landen al jaren bezig. Het is een proces van lange adem: landen moeten tal van hervormingen doorvoeren om aan alle voorwaarden te voldoen om lid te mogen worden. De trage onderhandelingen leiden vaak tot frustratie. Zo reageerde de Albanese premier Rama vandaag terughoudend toen hem werd gevraagd naar een mogelijke toetredingsdatum voor zijn land. "Wanneer Albanië lid zal worden van de EU? Er zijn drie dingen in het leven die je niet kunt voorspellen: God, seks en de EU", aldus de premier. Premier Jetten vindt het belangrijk "dat kandidaat-lidstaten eerder voordelen gaan genieten van het doorvoeren van hervormingen". Hij wil dat landen hun inwoners sneller kunnen laten zien wat er tegenover die hervormingen staat. Jetten denkt daarbij bijvoorbeeld aan praktische voordelen voor het bedrijfsleven en inwoners om alvast zaken te kunnen doen, zonder dat ze al lid zijn van de Unie. Door dit soort voordelen te bieden en intensiever te gaan samenwerken, moet voorkomen worden dat de toekomstige EU-landen hun blik richting Rusland of China wenden, hoopt Jetten, maar juist op "het Europese pad" blijven. De laatste tijd is er veel discussie over de uitbreiding van de Europese Unie. Behalve de landen op de Westelijke Balkan, willen ook Oekraïne en Moldavië lid worden. President Zelensky dringt aan op snelle toetreding van zijn land, maar veel EU-leiders temperen zijn verwachtingen. Op verzoek van de Europese Commissie komen de afgelopen tijd steeds meer voorstellen naar buiten hoe het toetredingsproces verbeterd of versneld kan worden. De Duitse bondskanselier Merz en de Franse president Macron stuurden aan de vooravond van de top samen een plan rond. Proeflidmaatschap Daarin stellen ze een soort proeflidmaatschap voor, waarin kandidaat-landen onder meer mogen deelnemen aan sommige vergaderingen, maar dan zonder stemrecht. Ook zouden ze onder voorwaarden alvast mogen toetreden tot de interne markt, nog voordat ze lid zijn. "Uitbreiding is erg belangrijk vanuit geopolitiek oogpunt. Energie, veiligheid, migratieroutes: dat zijn Europese belangen hier in de regio", zei Macron voor aanvang van de top. Merz steekt de hand ook in eigen boezem. "We hebben al dertien jaar geen nieuwe lidstaten toegelaten tot de EU. Dat betekent dat er ook nalatigheden aan onze kant zitten", aldus de bondskanselier. "De EU moet laten zien dat ze klaar is voor uitbreiding en die ook wil." Eerder kwamen Oostenrijk, Italië, Slovenië, Slowakije en Tsjechië met hun eigen voorstel. Ook zij willen dat de landen op de Westelijke Balkan zicht blijven houden op toetreding, omdat ze anders mogelijk afhaken en hun heil zoeken bij bijvoorbeeld Rusland en China. Echt sterker Daarbij kijken ze met name naar het grootste kandidaat-lid op de Balkan, Servië. Dat land onderhoudt goede banden met zowel Moskou als Peking. In Servië is de steun voor EU-toetreding onder de bevolking inmiddels gedaald tot maar 33 procent. Voor een deel is dat het gevolg van het gebrek aan vooruitgang in het toetredingsproces. Jetten gaat alle plannen vandaag bespreken, zegt hij. Voor een lidmaatschap-light, zoals in het voorstel van de Fransen en Duitsers voelt hij weinig. Wat hem betreft komen er geen "A- en B-leden" van de Europese Unie. Volledig lidmaatschap moet het einddoel blijven van onderhandelingen, zegt Jetten. "Het is heel erg belangrijk dat als je lid wil zijn van de Europese Unie je ook echt wel voldoet aan de normen en waarden die we stellen, zodat de EU ook echt sterker wordt bij nieuwe toetreders."
SYDNEY: A Sydney man credited with saving dozens of lives during last year’s deadly mass shooting on Bondi Beach has been charged with assaulting his father, local media and police said on Thursday. Ahmed al Ahmed shot to fame in December when he wrested a gun from one of the attackers during Australia’s deadliest attack in decades. Local media including national broadcaster ABC said Ahmed, 44, had been charged after allegedly assaulting his father. Asked to confirm the reporting, New South Wales police said: “On Sunday 15 March 2026 police received a report of an alleged assault at a home in Bankstown on Monday 9 March 2026.” They added that a 44-year-old man had then been charged this week with assault and stalking. He will face court on June 29, police said. Australian police as a rule do not identify individuals charged with crimes to the media. Ahmed told the ABC that the alleged incident was “fake information… it’s not true at all”. “I don’t have any information at all,” he was quoted as saying. Ahmed was widely hailed as a hero for his actions during the shooting, in which 15 people were killed and dozens wounded in what authorities have described as an antisemitic terrorist attack. He met Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and a fundraiser set up for him raised over $1 million.
