Proposal: Tighter rules for people wanting to bring family to Sweden

The government and the Sweden Democrats want to raise the bar for people who want to bring their family to Sweden from abroad To bring a partner and two kids here, the parties propose that you need to earn at least SEK 23 818 per month after tax, in addition to your housing costs. Students will not be able to bring their families here, and people who have asylum-related status in Sweden will have to wait for two years before they can apply to bring their families here.

Swedish MP suspected of child pornography

An MP with several high-profile roles within the Sweden Democrat Party is being investigated for child pornography offences, reports Swedish Radio News. During a search of the politician’s home, police seized several electronic devices, which are now being analysed, reports Swedish Television News. The Sweden Democrats tell SVT that the person has left all assignments for the party.

Survey: Housing shortage puts young Swedes off having kids

Almost one in five young adults (18 per cent) hesitate to start a family due to the housing shortage, according to a new survey by the Tenants' Association. Four years ago, that number was just 4 per cent. Fewer municipalities report an overall housing shortage, compared to four years ago, but it is the affordable housing that is scarce, according to the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning.

Syrian transitional government offers Sweden access for war crimes evidence

Syria’s transitional government says Sweden and other European countries can come to Syria to gather evidence of Assad-era war crimes, Swedish Radio's investigative programme Kaliber reports. Spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba says investigators can get access to documents, witnesses and crime scenes, and that security and intelligence archives are largely intact. This comes after Kaliber found that 15 men with alleged ties to the Assad regime are living in Sweden.

Opposition parties critical of government's teen deportation plans

The government and the Sweden Democrats have agreed to a solution they say will stop future teen deportations. Migration Minister Johan Forssell told a press conference on Monday it was a good, reasonable and fair proposal that would last a long time. However the opposition parties are critical of the proposal, and of the time it's taken to be presented.

Sweden’s parties close Järvaveckan with pledges on homes, safety and school 'culture days'

The Järvaveckan political event ended over the weekend and representatives of all parties in parliament have now held their speeches. The Moderate Party representative spoke about the right to own your own flat and the Sweden Democrats spoke about freedom from violence, crime and too much meddling by the state. The leader of the Liberal Party promised a 'culture day' for school children in socio-economically vulnerable areas, to go visit a theater for example, while the Center Party leader in her speech focused on overcrowding and the housing shortage.

Government and Sweden Democrats presents plan to stop 'teen deportations'

Young adults will soon be deemed as 'dependents' of their parents until they are 21, according to a proposal put forward by the government and the Sweden Democrats. This is a plan to stop what has become known as 'teen deportations' where children of immigrants have been told they have to leave the country when they turn 18, as they are then deemed as 'adults'. Radio Sweden goes through the details of the proposal, and how that affects those who already have left the country, or who have been told they have to leave.

Sweden’s ‘94 World Cup anthem gets a next-gen reboot

The children of GES, the trio behind Sweden's best loved World Cup football anthem, "När Vi Gräver Guld i USA", have made a new version of their fathers' 1994 hit song to mark Sweden's return to American soil for the 2026 World Cup later this month. Thirty-two years ago, "När Vi Gräver Guld i USA" or, "When We Dig For Gold in the USA", provided a popular backdrop to Sweden's best ever World Cup on foreign soil, when they finished third. Man accused of kidnappings in Assad's Syria worked at Swedish preschool

A man accused of kidnappings and extortion in Bashar al-Assad's Syria has been working in childcare at a Swedish preschool, according to Swedish Radio's investigative programme Kaliber. He is one of 15 men loyal to the former Syrian dictator who live in Sweden today, that Kaliber has been able to identify with the help of Swedish police files, images on social media as well as witnesses on the ground in Syria. Human rights lawyer Basima Jabry says Sweden must investigate, prosecute or expel such men to protect the public. The man denies the allegations.

Long-term unemployment remains high in Sweden

Unemployment has fallen since last summer, but the number of long-term unemployed people in Sweden remains high. The Public Employment Service has been criticised for not doing enough to help people get a job, or to offer training for professions where there are jobs available. The agency's director general, Maria Hemström Hemmingsson, says that they have relied too much on digital channels in the past. Now they will prioritise to meet in person with people who are, or who risk becoming, long-term unemployed.

Over a dozen of Bashar al-Assad's militiamen live in Sweden

Several men from militia groups loyal to Syria's former dictator Bashar al-Assad are currently living in Sweden, according to Swedish Radio's investigative programme Kaliber. They have been identified with the help of Swedish police investigations, social media and testimonies from the militias' victims. One man, who lives in a small town in Sweden, is known in Damascus as a dangerous leader of the militia. He is accused of kidnapping people and demanding money from their families. When contacted by Kaliber, he denies the allegations.

Suspected gang criminals abroad lose their Swedish permanent residence permits

11 people living abroad suspected of involvement in gang crime have had their Swedish permanent residence permits revoked, reports SVT News. Police say they were involved in serious violent crime, as well as drug and financial crimes. "I hope they're disappointed," says Marcus Nilsson, head of the border policing unit at the police's national operations department.

Speeches from Left Party, Social Democrats, Greens as Järvaveckan gets underway

Järvaveckan is underway in northwest Stockholm, and has so far seen speeches from the Left Party, the Social Democrats and the Greens. The Left Party have demanded tougher requirements for landlords while the Greens want it to be easier for young people in socioeconomically vulnerable areas to find work. Järvaveckan continues until Sunday.

Citizenship: Greens make new bid for a transition rules re-vote — through a special motion

The Greens are still trying to get a re-vote on the question of transition rules for the government's new citizenship reforms, set to come in effect on June 6. The controversy around the vote on transition rules — which saw two paired-out Sweden Democrat MPs vote in the chamber, causing the opposition's motion to be voted down — led to the collapse of the pairing agreement between Sweden's political parties. Now the Greens are reportedly planning to file what's known as a "motion arising out of an occurrence of major significance" — listen to hear what that means.

Four in 10 Swedes wouldn't move north — even if they got SEK 100,000

Four in 10 Swedes would say no to moving to the country's north for work and where unemployment is lower, even if they were offered a SEK 100,000 relocation allowance. That's according to a survey from Indikator Opinion, carried out on behalf of Swedish Radio's local P4 channels. Most people are happy with the lives they have where they live, and money doesn't make much of a difference there, says Indikator's head of polling Per Oleskog Tryggvason.

Party support for increasing voter turnout cut to nearly half

While voter turnout among foreign-born Swedes is declining, political parties are getting less money to reach this group as well as others with low participation in elections. Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand tells Radio Sweden that parties will have to make do with the funding they get. Meanwhile a number of opposition parties are critical: "It's unfortunate," says the Left Party's party secretary Maria Forsberg.

Ukraine to buy 20 JAS Gripen fighter jets from Sweden

Ukraine is to buy 20 of the latest models of JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in Uppsala today. Once the initial purchase is complete, Sweden will also donate 16 of its older generation of JAS Gripens to Ukraine in early 2027. It's the first step in a larger Gripen deal, in which Ukraine will buy up to 150 of the JAS 39 Gripen E/F combat aircraft, President Zelensky told a press conference.

Dozens of Swedish children identified in child pornography

Police have identified 49 children in Sweden who appear in child pornographic material, and who are suspected of having been victims of sexual assault. This follows a special operation, and according to police the children are from all over the country and range from infants to 18-year-olds. Police say their priority is working out the victims' identities: "Finding the children often means also finding the culprit," says Christer Andersson at the police's unit for internet-related sexual abuse of children.

New law obliges some stores in Sweden to accept cash

Grocery stores and pharmacies are to accept cash more widely, after a parliamentary vote. The use of cash has rapidly declined in Sweden in recent years, however many people remain dependent on it for daily purchases. The new law comes into effect on 1 July 2026.
