우리에게도 친밀한 여행지인 말레이시아는 13개 주로 구성돼 있다. 그중 전통적으로 왕(Sultan)이 통치하는 9개 주는 조호르, 크다, 클란탄, 느그리슴빌란, 파항, 페락, 퍼리스, 슬랑오르, 트렝가누는 다 서말레이시아 반도에 있다. 말레이시아 동부(동말레이시아)는 보르네오섬 북부에 라부안, 사바(Sabah)주와 사라왁(Sarawak)주가 있다. 울창한 열대 우림과 세계적인 휴양지, 다양한 원주민 문화가 공존하는 곳. 사바, 사라왁은 술탄이 없다. 대신 5년마다 선거로 뽑는 주 수상(Chief Minister)이 주 정부 공식 행정 실권과 권한을 행사한다. 해안 도시 코타키나발루(Kota Kinabalu)는 보르네오섬 북부 말레이시아 사바주의 주도다. 현대적인 편의 시설, 토착 문화, 활기찬 시장, 현대적인 산책로, 그리고 아름다운 열대 풍경이 완벽한 해변으로 유명하다. 또한 해발 4095m의 키나발루산이 있는 키나발루 국립공원으로 가는 관문이다. 내가 10년 만에 다시 찾은 지난 5월 말은 추수 감사제(Hari Raya Haji)인 카마탄(Kaamatan 원주민 카디잔두순어로 '수확'이라는 뜻), 사바주 공식 축제 기간이었다. 그래서 관공서와 학교도 쉬고, 대신 백화점, 음식점, 마트 등이 현지인 가족, 무리로 가득했다. 식당에 대기 줄까지 있는 것을 보니 지역 경제 활성화를 느낄 수 있었다. 코타키나발루의 수테라 마리나(Sutera Marina) 선착장에서 늦은 오후에 출발하는 크루즈 요트를 탔다. 약 2시간 남중국해를 따라 툰쿠 압둘 라만 해양 공원 섬들을 지나며, 세계적으로 유명한 코타키나발루의 황금빛 일몰을 감상할 기회다. 선내에서는 승객들이 뷔페식 현지 식사를 하는 동안 3인조 밴드와 승무원들이 군무를 추며 흥을 돋운다. 나중엔 모든 승객이 다 같이 선내를 돌며 춤을 추는 것으로 마무리했다. 유일한 한국인이었던 나 때문인지 한국 노래도 몇 곡 불렀다. 밴드의 한국말 발음이 완벽하다고 내가 감탄하자, 옆 외국인 승객이 "한국만의 노래가 아니라, 이미 세계인의 노래다"라고 답한다. 에어 보르네오(Air Borneo)는 주 내 지역을 연결하는 사라왁 정부가 설립한 국영 지역 항공사다. 아직 사라왁은 한국과 직행이 없다. 사라왁주는 아직 우리에겐 생소한 여행지다. 보르네오섬 북부에 있는 말레이시아 최대 면적의 주로, 석유, 천연가스, 석탄 매장, 팜유, 임업 등 풍부한 천연 자원과 산업 다각화를 통해 말레이시아 내에서 가장 경제력이 높은 지역 중 하나다. 그래서 수도 쿠알라룸푸르나 산업 중심지들과 어깨를 나란히 할 정도다. 전체 내용보기

'2500년 전 바닷길을 열다' 지중해 발효의 기원

2026년 4월 21일부터 23일까지 스페인 바르셀로나 피라(Fira de Barcelona)에서 열린 세계 최대 규모의 수산식품 전문 박람회인 Seafood Expo Global(SEG)에서 바이어 미팅과 전시 일정을 마친 이튿날 새벽, 우리는 바르셀로나 공항 인근에서 렌터카를 빌려 북쪽 레스칼라(L'Escala)를 향해 운전대를 잡았다. 바르셀로나의 복잡한 도심을 벗어나자마자, 지중해 특유의 서늘하고 짭조름한 바닷바람이 뺨을 스치며 박람회장에서 며칠 동안 쌓아온 긴장과 피로를 단숨에 씻어 내렸다. 야자수가 줄지어 선 이 아름다운 해안의 이름은 '코스타 브라바(Costa Brava)'. 스페인어로 '거친 해안(Wild Coast)'이라는 뜻이다. 스페인에서도 손꼽히는 절경으로 이름난 이곳은 부드러운 모래사장이 끝없이 펼쳐지는 여느 휴양지와는 전혀 다른 풍경을 지닌다. 깎아지른 절벽과 바위 해안이 굽이굽이 이어지고, 그 거친 틈새마다 작은 만(灣)과 수백 년 된 어촌 마을들이 숨어 있는, 지극히 야성적인 땅이다. 그러나 경주에서 전통 방식으로 장독에 액젓을 담그는 사람에게 이 거친 바다는 풍광 좋은 관광지만이 아니었다. 무려 2500년 전, 고대 그리스 상인들의 무역선들이 항아리에 발효 액젓을 가득 싣고 험난한 파도를 넘나들던 지중해 발효 무역의 핵심 항로였기 때문이다. 현대 투싼의 SUV 가속 페달을 밟으며 해안선을 달리다 보니, 수천 년 전 돛을 펄럭이며 액젓을 실어 나르던 고대의 돛단배들도 꼭 이 짠 바닷바람을 맞으며 같은 해안을 통과했으리라는 생각에 묘한 흥분이 일었다. 거대한 사각 돛을 활짝 펼친 채 지중해의 바람을 가득 안고 항구로 들어오던 그리스 무역선. 그 선창 깊은 곳에는, 지중해의 천연 소금에 절여져 콤콤하고 진한 우마미(감칠맛)를 품은 수천 개의 액젓 항아리들이 촘촘히 박혀 있었을 것이다. 수천 년 전부터 이 길은 바다와 시간, 그리고 인류가 하나로 연결되던 오래된 지중해의 '발효 로드(Fermentation Road)'였다. 한반도 경주에서 전통 왕신 장독대를 지키며 멸치와 천일염만으로 액젓을 담그는 사람으로서, 지구 반대편 지중해 바닷길 위에서 2500년 전 발효 장인들의 숨결을 좇는 여정은 그렇게 시작되었다. 두 문명이 겹쳐진 도시: 그리스의 시장(엠포리온)에서 로마의 거대 산업 도시로 해안을 따라 두 시간가량 달려 카탈루냐 해안의 아름다운 어촌 레스칼라에 도착했다. 이곳에는 고대 지중해 문명의 거대한 숨결이 고스란히 남아 있는 엠푸리에스(Empúries) 유적지가 자리잡고 있다. 구글 지도가 유적지 정문 대신 좁은 트레킹 도로를 안내하는 바람에 한참을 헤맨 끝에야 박물관 공영 주차장에 닿을 수 있었다. 마침 수학여행을 온 현지 학생들로 북적이는 유적지에서, 꺄르르 웃고 떠드는 아이들에게 수천 년 전 이 땅을 다스리며 바다를 호령했던 그리스와 로마의 흔적이 어떤 의미로 다가올지 문득 궁금해졌다. 유적지 입구를 지나 안으로 들어서는 순간, 나는 한 공간 안에 두 개의 거대한 문명이 겹쳐져 있는 놀라운 풍경과 마주했다. 기원전 6세기경, 바닷길을 통해 지중해 무역을 맹렬히 개척하던 고대 그리스인들은 바로 이 해안에 '시장(Market)'을 뜻하는 '엠포리온(Emporion)'을 세웠다. 배를 대기 좋은 이 항구를 거점으로 삼아 현지 이베리아 부족과 활발히 교류하며, 와인·올리브유·소금·발효 액젓 같은 고가의 식품을 거래하는 거대한 교역로를 다져 나갔다. 이후 기원전 3세기경, 제2차 포에니 전쟁을 거치며 로마가 이베리아 반도로 세력을 확장하면서 이곳은 새로운 전환점을 맞이한다. 로마는 카르타고에 대응하기 위해 엠포리온을 군사 거점으로 활용했지만, 흥미롭게도 그리스인들이 닦아놓은 해상 교역 시스템과 발효 시설을 파괴하지 않았다. 오히려 그 위에 자신들 특유의 거대한 행정력과 고도화된 산업 체계를 덧붙여 신도시로 확장해 나갔다. 현재의 유적지를 살펴보면, 바닷가와 맞닿은 아래쪽에는 아기자기한 규모의 그리스식 도시 흔적이 남아 있고, 박물관이 자리잡은 언덕 위로는 웅장한 로마식 도로와 화려한 목욕탕, 원형 투기장, 신전이 펼쳐진다. 그리스인들이 모험심으로 바닷길을 열었다면, 로마인들은 그 길 위에 액젓의 대량 생산부터 지중해 전역 유통까지 아우르는 치밀하고 조직적인 제국의 산업 도시를 완성해 낸 것이다. 가로스(Garos)에서 가룸(Garum)으로: 로마 액젓은 그리스에서 시작 엠푸리에스의 발효 유적을 제대로 이해하려면, 흔히 '로마의 생선 소스'라 불리는 액젓의 기원부터 바로잡을 필요가 있다. 지중해의 식탁을 점령했던 이 위대한 감칠맛의 뿌리는 로마가 아닌 그리스였다. 기원전 5세기경 고대 아테네의 문헌에 '가로스(Garos)'라는 이름으로 처음 등장한 이 생선 소스는, 제국의 이동을 따라 로마로 건너가 '가룸(Garum)' 혹은 '리쿠아멘(Liquamen)'으로 진화하며 지중해를 넘어 세계의 식문화를 뒤바꿔 놓았다. 전체 내용보기
