Video of figures clambering in and out of manholes sparks intrigue โ and comparisons with crime-fighting turtles It started in early May. Under cover of darkness, three people pried open a manhole cover in Queens, New York, and clambered down into the sewer. The incident might have gone unnoticed, but the subterranean quest, which was caught on film, captured New Yorkersโ interest when it happened again, and again, in the same month, with two other groups filmed making their way in and out of the sewer system in Brooklyn. The string of events have seen those involved dubbed โmole peopleโ by the local press. Continue reading...
Senior figures at Manchester's Fire and Rescue Service said they have had words with employees who backed the party, saying it was a cause for 'concern'.
Former figures at regulator voice disquiet after series of provocative interviews by recently departed chair Regulators are not generally known for courting controversy. When the day job involves making delicate, legally fraught decisions, they tend to be a circumspect bunch. However, since stepping down as chair of Ofcom, one of Britainโs most scrutinised watchdogs, the Conservative peer Michael Grade has been doing his best to buck that stereotype. โIโm free of the shackles,โ he recently said. Lawyer for British women attacks โextraordinary spectacleโ of Tateโs arrival in Moscow British women who have accused Andrew Tate of rape, assault and coercive control have questioned why the self-professed misogynistic influencer has appeared in Russia as UK authorities continue to hold off on seeking his extradition. Tate admires Vladimir Putin and amplifies Kremlin propaganda online. He arrived in the same week that Russian authorities welcomed US rightwing figures at an annual conference described as Russiaโs answer to Davos. Continue reading...
A fake alien made by a Doctor Who sculptor, animal organs sourced from a butcher, an actual magician behind the camera โฆ this outrageous story makes for a great watch If you had to be interviewed on film, how would you hope to come across? Attractive, honest, a good egg? Or pathologically shifty, to the point that audiences want to throw their shoes at the screen? I found myself unlacing my Doc Martens this week, watching a documentary about the biggest hoax of the last century. In 1995, a grainy film was released that purported to be of an autopsy conducted on a creature recovered from a crash site on military land in Roswell, New Mexico. The incident had long been hallowed in ufology, but no moving footage had ever been uncovered. Youโve seen it. Hazmat figures loom over a bulbous-headed humanoid, spreadeagled on the table. Its dead, oval eyes are black, mouth agape, belly distended. I saw the shocking footage again last night, or thought I did. It was actually my laptop screen going dark, after I fell asleep in front of Netflix. Continue reading...

Settlement over alleged child molestation by school janitors is latest in troubling string of allegations spanning decades One of the most prominent Catholic high schools in New Orleans has agreed to pay a seven-figure monetary sum to settle a lawsuit claiming child molestation by janitors at the institution decades earlier. The plaintiff struck the agreement with Jesuit high school ahead of a trial scheduled to start in the Louisiana cityโs civil district courthouse on 15 June, roughly six years after he sued under a pseudonym. It is the third month in a row US jobs figures have beaten expectations.
Government figures show unemployment rate at 4.3% amid rising inflation and economic uncertainty from Iran war US employers added 172,000 jobs in May while the countryโs unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%, a sign of a resilient labor market despite rising inflation and economic uncertainty brought on by continued conflict in the Middle East. Economists initially predicted there would be about 80,000 new jobs and a steady unemployment rate of 4.3%. Job figures for March and April were also revised up 29,000 and 64,000, respectively, a 93,000 boost compared to initial figures. Continue reading...

British Retail Consortium figures show footfall rose in May, with consumer confidence improving after spending squeeze Greater numbers of consumers went shopping last month as spring sunshine brought welcome relief to retailers, which have faced a squeeze on spending since the US-Israel war on Iran. Figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and a separate survey by the accountancy firm BDO showed a bounce-back in footfall during May, reversing a sharp decline in April. Continue reading...
(Atlantic) After scrapping an album and starting anew, Lizzo still sounds lost amid these weak genre-hopping songs. Perhaps the zeitgeist has simply left her behind Just over a year ago, Lizzo appeared on Saturday Night Live, announcing a new album called Love in Real Life in grandstanding style. Wielding an electric guitar, clad in a Trump-baiting T-shirt that read Tariffied, she performed its title track and two other new songs, Still Bad and Donโt Make Me Love U. As with her appearance earlier the same week on a late night talkshow โ during which she ran into the audience to high-five fans who were yelling โwe love you Lizzo!โ โ it looked very much like a defiant comeback, fit to drag her out of the controversy that erupted at the end of her hugely successful 2023 world tour. Three former backing dancers and a costume designer filed lawsuits against the singer alleging harassment and discrimination: damaging claims given how Lizzoโs songs have preached a message of inclusivity, body positivity and self-confidence. Some of the allegations were dismissed by a judge but others are ongoing; Lizzo has refused to settle out of court, saying: โIโm fighting the case because I know that itโs not true.โ But the Love in Real Life single, a pivot towards rock that owed a little to Tom Pettyโs American Girls โ or the Strokesโ American Girls-indebted Last Nite if you prefer โ failed to make the charts, a far cry from the period between 2018 and 2022 when Lizzoโs singles seemed to go multi-platinum as a matter of course. The same fate befell Still Bad, a track much more in the vein of her big hits, prompting a rethink. The album was pulled, Lizzo apparently taking control of her own destiny โ โI need to do shit my wayโ. A mixtape that returned her more-or-less to where she started, before pop stardom came calling โ punchy hip-hop, albeit tricked out with guest appearances from Doja Cat and SZA โ appeared in its place: My Face Hurts from Smiling received mixed reviews and underwhelming streaming figures.
