When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang makes his second visit to South Korea in just seven months this week, it won’t be only to meet top memory chip and robotics executives, but to throw the first pitch at a baseball game and appear on a TV talk show. While a celebrity in his own right, the charm push by the Taiwan-born 63-year-old highlights South Korea’s critical position in the AI landscape. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix between them make about 70 per cent of the memory needed for AI chips like Nvidia’s. And the country’s strength in manufacturing and robotics sets it up to be a key player in physical AI, where AI is embedded in robots, cars and factories. “Nvidia’s dependence on South Korean suppliers is rising,” Jeff Kim, an analyst at Seoul-based KB Securities, wrote in a research note. Huang “needs a manufacturing site for physical AI”, Kim said. “South Korea is emerging as a perfect testbed.” Asia’s fourth-largest economy is also a major Nvidia customer, with the Silicon Valley-based company announcing in October that it would supply more than 260,000 of its most advanced AI chips to the government and some of the country’s biggest businesses. Analysts and investors say South Korea’s importance has been magnified after trade frictions spoiled sales of the most advanced semiconductors to China. “South Korean companies are running high-end factories, which need a lot of these kinds of chips,” said Seung-yub Lee, a fund manager at Seoul-based Quad Investment Management. President Lee Jae Myung has vowed to make AI investment a top policy priority, aiming to turn South Korea into one of the world’s top three AI powers amid a broader push to counter the economic impact of a shrinking population. “Korea is a critical part of our ecosystem,” Huang told reporters at a dinner with South Korean tech executives on Monday in Taipei, the first day of the annual, industry-defining Computex trade show. He highlighted robotics when asked where Nvidia could invest, because “Korea is a manufacturing country, and Korea has a population limit”. “We have a lot to do together,” he said. Huang’s plans clearly include courting the country’s 50 million-strong population. He will appear on one of South Korea’s most popular talk shows, “You Quiz on the Block”, which its production company, CJ ENM, likens to the Jimmy Fallon Show in the US. And he will don a Doosan Bears jersey to throw the first pitch at Sunday’s home game against the Kiwoom Heroes, with Doosan Group Chairman Park Jeong-won acting as the ceremonial first batter. Arms of chaebol Doosan develop robots and make materials used in Nvidia’s Blackwell chips. Park Ju-gun, head of corporate analysis firm Leaders Index, said Huang learned a lesson from his visit in October, when a meeting over chicken and beer with the chiefs of Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor at a Kkanbu Chicken outlet generated a big media buzz. Huang was coy when asked by Reuters which South Korean executives he would meet this time, but food will again be a feature. According to local media, he may have a Korean barbecue dinner in Seoul’s trendy Sungsu area with executives from SK Group, Hyundai Motor and LG Group. Reuters has reported likely meetings with LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and executives at South Korea’s top online platform, Naver.

Here are seven tips to help keep young professionals in demand no matter how quickly the field’s tools evolve. 1. Master the fundamentals first. AI tools can help you code, but you still need strong fundamentals in: Data structures and algorithms for problem-solving. Operating systems, databases, and networking for system-level understanding. Core programming languages such as C++, Java, and Python. AI can autocomplete syntax, but if you don’t understand how things work under the hood, you’re likely to struggle to debug or optimize. 2. Learn how to work with AI, not against it. The best engineers will not try to out-code AI. Instead, they will learn to: Write clear prompts to generate better code snippets. Review and debug AI-generated code for accuracy, performance, and security. Use AI for productivity boosts while still exercising judgment. Think of AI as a teammate. The real skill is knowing when to trust it and when not to. 3. Build projects that showcase end-to-end thinking. Employers increasingly look for engineers who can design and build systems, not just solve problems. Create projects that show you can: Define requirements clearly. Use AI tools responsibly within the workflow. Deliver a product that scales and is maintainable. 4. Sharpen your system design skills early. How to design fallbacks when AI fails. How to ensure scalability and reliability. 5. Develop strong communication skills. Today’s engineers don’t just code in isolation. You will be expected to: Explain design choices to teammates and stakeholders. Document decisions clearly. Collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams. This is one area where AI cannot replace you. Clear communication is a career accelerant. 6. Stay curious and keep learning. The tech industry moves fast, and AI is accelerating that pace. Cultivate habits such as: Following industry news, blogs, and open-source projects. Experimenting with new AI tools, frameworks, and libraries. Engaging in communities such as GitHub, IEEE Collabratec, LinkedIn, and Medium. Employers value engineers who keep themselves sharp and relevant. 7. Think beyond coding. AI will increasingly handle routine coding tasks. The differentiators for you will be: Problem-framing: Can you take a vague idea and turn it into a solution? It’s not extreme weather, even as “major events” become routine. It’s not cybersecurity, even as connections expand across the grid. The real challenge is this: Distribution systems were designed for a different reality. Long gone are the days of predictable demand, one-way power flow and isolated disruptions. At Black & Veatch, we see that leading utilities are no longer debating whether to modernize. They’re deciding how quickly they can do it, and how to do it at scale. Across grid modernization programs globally, three truths consistently emerge. They define what it takes to prepare the distribution system for what’s next: 1. Outage response is not a resilience strategy Resilience is being redefined in real time. A strategy centered on mobilizing crews and restoring service as quickly as possible is reactive, and increasingly insufficient. Resilience has to shift upstream into integrated system design. That starts with hardening. Stronger poles, undergrounding and structural upgrades all have a role, particularly in high-risk corridors. We’re also seeing meaningful gains from how the network is configured and how quickly it can respond without waiting on manual intervention. This is where distribution automation programs can change outcomes. Strategically placed reclosers, automated switches and fault indicators help contain disruptions before they spread. When combined with feeder reconfiguration and updated protection strategies, distribution automation investments allow utilities to set more aggressive recovery targets and achieve measurable reductions in outage duration and customer impact. 2. Future-readiness depends on DERs at scale Forecasting is less and less reliable. Only 19 percent of utilities report strong confidence in their ability to predict future load growth, according to the Black & Veatch 2025 Electric Report. Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) like solar, storage, EVs and behind-the-meter generation are exciting solutions; but they fundamentally change how the system operates. Power is no longer just delivered. It’s injected, stored and redirected in ways the system was never designed to manage. At scale, these challenges show up quickly — particularly on feeders where distributed generation is approaching or exceeding hosting capacity. Protection coordination becomes more difficult when fault current comes from multiple directions. Voltage becomes less predictable as generation fluctuates throughout the day. And planning models must now account for highly variable, location-specific behavior. Distribution modernization is fundamentally changing how the system is designed and operated so it can absorb disruption, manage bi-directional flows and respond in real time. Adapting to bi-directional power flow requires more than incremental updates. Leading utilities are responding by building flexibility into the system, moving beyond static assumptions toward dynamic hosting capacity and interconnection studies, planning that incorporates DER, EV adoption and localized load growth, and infrastructure aligned with the communications and control needed to manage it. 3. The edge must be intelligent, visible and secure As system stress and complexity increase, utilities need far greater visibility and control over the network. Historically, utilities relied on customer calls, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) at the substation level and field crews to understand what was happening on the system. That model doesn’t hold up. You can’t effectively manage a system you can’t see. Plus, the most critical events are increasingly happening beyond the substation — on feeders, laterals, and at the edge where DER and customer behavior are interacting with the grid. Grid-edge technologies have become essential. Sensors, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and automated switching provide the raw data and control needed to move from reactive to proactive operations. In more advanced deployments, utilities are creating centralized control environments that allow operators to see and manage the distribution system in near real time. That capability is enabled by: Advanced communications networks to form the backbone of real-time grid visibility Distribution Management System (DMS) and Outage Management System (OMS) to enable faster, more coordinated system response Analytics, AI and machine learning to improve situational awareness, anticipate system conditions, and support operational decision-making The same connectivity enabling this real-time visibility and control also introduces new vulnerabilities, blurring the line between physical and cyber risk, yet many utilities manage them separately. Only 22 percent have unified teams in place, even as threats continue to rise, including a 50 percent increase in substation attacks and growing exposure to malware and ransomware, according to the Black & Veatch 2025 Electric Report. Cybersecurity and resilient network design must be embedded into the architecture from the outset—not layered on after the fact. People-to-people exchanges are already laying the groundwork for a different kind of Belt and Road collaboration. That's on full display in Astana as Chief Executive John Lee’s delegation wrapped up the Kazakhstan leg of his Central Asian tour with a visit to Nazarbayev University (NU) on Wednesday. Two individuals on the NU campus – a Hong Kong-born engineering professor and a local Kazakh startup founder – believe the story lies not just on a government level, but also in student exchanges, educational technology innovation and a new business corridor between Astana and Hong Kong. For the past eight years, Annie Ng, an associate professor at NU’s School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, is one of the few Hongkongers working in Kazakh academia. Ng said the chief executive’s visit is a long-overdue catalyst. “I think this is a very good start. I believe there will be more MoUs and more collaborations with different university institutes in Hong Kong with NU and Kazakhstan – not just for research, but also other education programmes or short courses,” she said. Ng sees Kazakhstan as a pivotal player under the Belt and Road framework, but notes a gap in Hong Kong’s engagement compared with the mainland. While there has been a growing number of mainland tourists and entrepreneurs in Almaty and Astana, she said Hongkongers remain conspicuously absent and should explore opportunities in Kazakhstan. “Young people will be more interested here and explore something new – not a typical country to visit. Kazakhstan, Central Asia, we are also close to other Central Asian countries,” she said. For Hong Kong businesses, she said, the potential is tangible. “A lot of things are developed in Hong Kong but not here. They can find a lot of room to expand their business.” Nurken Bolatov is chief operational officer of Artisan Education, a startup based on the NU campus that produces engineering kits and a web-platform for learning robotics, programming and STEM. Bolatov’s company has already been accepted into the ideation programme at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP). “For us, I hope it’s a great opportunity and experience to try our products in another region, with other students, and get some more feedback,” he said. But his ambitions for Hong Kong go beyond market testing. He sees the city as a manufacturing gateway. “There are a lot of manufacturers in Hong Kong and in China, so probably it would be great for us to cooperate with them so we can produce a lot more of our products.” He also hopes to tap into Hong Kong’s talent pool. “As I know, there are a lot of strong universities in China and in Hong Kong. Probably it would be helpful to find some potential team members to get into our project.” His startup is already piloting its products in several countries, including South Korea, Türkiye and the UK. Mumbai: Domestic IT stocks extended rally for the third straight session on Tuesday, driving the Nifty IT index to its biggest single-day gain in a year. Analysts said the index's chart structure remains constructive, signalling continued positive momentum in the near term.The Nifty IT index ended 4.2% higher at 31,116.6 on Tuesday, its highest gains since May 2025. The index is up 7.6% in the past three sessions, against Nifty 50's fall of 1.8%. TCS was the top gainer on Tuesday, up 6.7%, followed by Infosys, HCL Technologies and LTM, which were up 4-6% each."Indian IT stocks continue to extend gains, supported by improving global software sentiment and growing evidence that enterprise AI adoption is expanding technology spending opportunities rather than disrupting incumbent service providers," said Kunal Bajaj, research analyst at Choice Institutional Equities.Bajaj said other factors like rupee depreciation, strong orderbook and improving outlook for discretionary tech spending, are supporting the current rally in IT stocks.131473558IT stocks look strong on technical charts too. "The Nifty IT index has formed a bullish hammer pattern on the monthly chart, signalling a trend reversal," said Ruchit Jain, vice-president, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. "Within the sector, recent moves suggest a mix of short covering in stocks such as TCS and HCL Tech, along with fresh long build-up in Infosys and Coforge over the past three sessions." Despite the recent rebound, domestic IT stocks have underperformed the broader market in 2026, with the Nifty IT index declining 17.9% so far this year against a 10.1% fall in Nifty 50.Jain expects the IT benchmark's up move to extend towards 32,000-32,100, near its April highs. According to Bajaj, tier-2 IT firms have historically gained market share during tech transitions due to their agility. "With valuation premiums cooling, we see better relative risk-reward in Coforge, Persistent Systems and Happiest Minds. Among the tier-one companies, we like Infosys and Tech Mahindra," he said.

Mumbai: Information technology stocks surged on Monday, dodging a weak broader market, with the Nifty IT index closing at its highest level since April 23, as attractive valuations and recent AI-led partnerships drew investor interest and prompted traders to build some fresh long positions.The Nifty IT index advanced 2.7%, its strongest single-day gain in nearly two weeks (since May 19), even as the benchmark Nifty declined 0.7%. Tech Mahindra, Infosys and LTM rose 3.7% each, while Persistent Systems gained 3.6%. Coforge and Oracle Financial Services Software advanced 2.6% and 2.1%, respectively."Indian IT firms are following suit of American companies like Anthropic and OpenAI by taking up contracts and tie-ups which are perceived as promising by investors," said Gaurav Sharma, head of Research, Globe Capital.Wipro's expanded Agentic AI partnership with ServiceNow and Coforge's acquisition of Encora have helped ease concerns that had weighed on the sector earlier due to AI-linked disruption fears.The rebound comes after a sharp underperformance this year. The recent momentum has turned positive, with the IT index gaining about 3% over the past week, while the Nifty has fallen 2.7%.131452365"The open interest has doubled in the past couple of months in large-cap IT stocks, indicating a huge build-up of short positions," said Jay Vora, Technical Analyst, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. "On Monday, while short positions remained as is, traders built fresh long positions in the space."Vora said that a more meaningful short covering rally would require stocks to move above key technical levels, with most large-cap names currently 2-3% below their 40-day exponential moving averages."There are short positions in the midcap IT companies as well, but it is not as significant as the large caps," he said.The rebound in IT shares is also on account of valuations falling below 10-year averages following the recent sell-off."Large-cap names like TCS and Infosys are trading at mouthwatering levels, close to 16-17 times Price to Earnings, while midcap companies like Coforge, Oracle and Mphasis are around 20-30 times PE, which are attractive," Sharma said.While near-term volatility may persist, valuations remain compelling over a two-to-three-year horizon, he said. Sharma's top picks are OFSS, Tech Mahindra, Coforge and Mphasis, and recommends IT Exchange Traded Funds for retail investors.The momentum favours IT stocks now, though the index is nearing key hurdles."Technically, the Nifty IT index has immediate support established at the 29,300-28,900 zone, while initial resistance is positioned at 30,500, with a broader multi-week position of 31,200," said Nischal Jain, Quant Researcher, Share.Market by PhonePe.Sharma said the Nifty IT index is on the verge of a breakout from an inverse head and shoulder pattern, which could extend the rally towards 31,500.
