Anniversary Statement: Beech B200 Super King Air, PH-ZAZ
Loss of control after takeoff, London Southend Airport, 13 July 2025
This statement provides an update on the ongoing AAIB investigation into an accident involving a Beech B200 Super King Air, PH-ZAZ, at London Southend Airport, which occurred one year ago today, on 13 July 2025.
The aircraft experienced a loss of control shortly after takeoff from Runway 05. Prior to rotation the aircraft yawed slightly to the left. Once airborne, it immediately deviated to the left of the runway centreline in a climbing left turn. It reached an altitude of between 70 - 80 ft above the runway level, having turned through 90°, before descending towards the ground. The aircraft struck the ground within the airfield boundary and an intense post-crash fire followed. Tragically, all four occupants were fatally injured.
At this time, our thoughts remain with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this accident and all those affected by it.
To date, the investigation has focused on understanding the factors which contributed to the loss of control. It is examining relevant technical, operational, human and organisational factors to determine if these aspects contributed to the accident. The AAIB has been assisted in its investigation by accredited representatives, technical advisers and subject matter experts from relevant organisations.
The aircraft suffered substantial disruption during the impact and ensuing post-crash fire, with only limited physical evidence remaining. Detailed examination of the aircraft and its components, while limited to some extent by the damage sustained, has been conducted in coordination with the relevant manufacturers.
The aircraft’s flightpath was established by witness video and CCTV imagery, and ADS-B data. There was no requirement for either a flight data or cockpit voice recorder to be installed on the aircraft.
The evidence gathered and the results of various examinations are currently being analysed. The investigation is ongoing and a final report will be published once all investigation activities have been completed.
