Installation of Nemo I-VMS devices has begun
MMO confirms next steps for vessels registered for a Nemo device and issues a notice for those unsure about airtime contracts for SC2 devices
Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has confirmed that more than 92% of eligible vessels were registered for a Nemo device by the 12 July 2026 deadline.
Nemo devices are being supplied and installed on eligible vessels at no charge to those who registered by the deadline. Nemo devices, which have already been shipped to vessel owners, will carry a one-year warranty from the date of installation.
Installations have already started and are expected to continue over the next three month.
Vessel owners will be contacted by CLS UK to arrange installations, which are expected to be grouped regionally by port. CLS UK has advised that it will work with industry and engineers to keep disruption to a minimum. Airtime contracts will start when the installation period has been completed, and you will be notified by CLS UK in advance of any payment request.
Once your installation date has been confirmed, please charge your device, ensuring the green light is showing, 48 hours before your appointment. For now, devices should be stored safely in the original packaging.
Sean Douglas, Head of Regulatory Assurance at MMO said:
On behalf of MMO, I would like to extend my thanks to those who participated in this recent stage of the roll-out by registering for a Nemo device. This is a significant uptake during difficult circumstances and we are sincerely grateful for your ongoing cooperation.
MMO has contracted CLS UK to complete this work, following ceased data transmissions of SC2 devices to the UK VMS Hub in August 2025. In response to concerns from industry about future costs associated with Nemo devices, MMO has been assured by CLS UK that any increase in airtime and device price will be in line with normal price rises and inflation.
Please cooperate with CLS UK, and their certified engineers, to arrange the installation of your device at the soonest available appointment”.
Vessel owners are reminded that missing your agreed installation appointment without adequate notice to the supplier or engineer, could mean you incur charges.
Eligible vessel owners who missed the deadline should contact MMO’s I-VMS team, but there is no guarantee that a Nemo device will be provided at no charge.
Those yet to purchase an I-VMS device should act now to secure a device and ensure you are compliant and avoid future enforcement action.
I-VMS data allows MMO to monitor positional data of vessels to support a range of activities such as fisheries management, future displacement compensation and to ensure a level playing field through regulatory assurance.
Notice about SC2 device data and airtime
We are aware there is some confusion about the status of SC2 devices and what this means for you, your vessel and compliance with your licence condition.
For clarity, SC2 devices remain type-approved. However, the licence condition requires I-VMS devices to transmit data to the supplier for ongoing transmission to the UK VMS Hub. The UK VMS Hub has not received data transmissions from SC2 devices, since 12 August 2025.
This means, SC2 devices will not enable you to comply with your licence condition.
Please consider this information carefully before purchasing an SC2 device, or continuing any airtime agreement you may have with the device supplier, Succorfish.
Make sure you review the terms of your contract with your device supplier carefully before making any decisions and seek independent advice if you are unsure what to do.
