Background
Since 2014, the European Parliament has been ready to update EU air passenger rights rules, which have been in force since 2004 and the purpose of which are to ensure passengers are sufficiently protected against travel disruptions. However, differing positions between EU countries led to progress on this file failing to advance for 11 years. In June 2025, EU ministers managed to overcome their difference, opening the way for negotiations with Parliament. After an intense year of interinstitutional talks Parliament and Council negotiators managed to reach a compromise text on the review of current rules, to be confirmed in a final plenary vote on Tuesday (7 July) and later in Council.
