HKO downgrades typhoon signal to T8 at 7.10am

The Observatory replaced the T9 signal with the No. 8 Southwest Gale or Storm Signal at 7.10 am on Sunday, and confirmed that the warning would stay in effect until at least noon.

Sustained winds averaging 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected, with gale-force conditions forecast to persist for some time.

Although Typhoon Noul is moving steadily inland across Guangdong and gradually weakening, the Observatory noted that gales are still sweeping many parts of Hong Kong — particularly offshore areas and high ground, where occasional storm-force gusts may occur.

The No. 8 signal will stay hoisted through the midday period.

Depending on how local wind speeds subside, the Observatory will then evaluate whether to downgrade the alert further to the Strong Wind Signal No. 3.

Meanwhile, rough seas and large swells continue to pose hazards.

The public is urged to remain vigilant — stay well away from the shoreline and avoid all water sports.

Residents should continue sheltering indoors until conditions moderate, and authorities stress that the public should continue to exercise caution until conditions subside.
