President Meloni’s video message to FII PRIORITY Europe 2026 Summit

Distinguished authorities, ladies and gentlemen, dear friends, welcome to Rome!

Italy is pleased to host the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit Europe 2026 to discuss the future of Europe in the very place where the Treaties of Rome were signed in 1957 laying the foundations of today’s European Union. As we approach the seventieth anniversary of those Treaties, we must reflect on the Europe we want and need to build.

It is clear that being a major commercial or regulatory platform is no longer enough. We need strategic autonomy, industrial capacity, technological sovereignty, and financial power. And Europe must be ready to use its geopolitical and geoeconomic strength. We want a Europe that focuses its energies on the major strategic issues where it is vital to join forces, while leaving to nation states responsibility for those areas where they can achieve better results on their own.

In doing this, a priority must be strengthening synergies with our partners. Starting with cooperation between Europe and the Gulf, which has enormous untapped potential and can be decisive in connecting West and East, Africa and Asia. Italy intends to play a leading role in this, as a gateway to Europe and a natural energy, logistics and commercial hub in the Mediterranean. Working together, Europe and the Gulf can offer the world a replicable and scalable model of strategic cooperation, capable of turning energy, trade, infrastructure and interconnections into factors of stability rather than vulnerability.

This is consistent with what the Future Investment Initiative represents: a global agenda where ideas, capital, technology and concrete projects come together to build the future. My hope is that Rome can become the permanent European stop for this work: the place where we measure results, calibrate progress and set new priorities. To determine, together, our destiny.
