Statement by President Meloni on the passing of Cardinal Camillo Ruini

I am deeply moved and saddened by the news of the passing of Cardinal Camillo Ruini.

A great man of the Church, of extraordinary intelligence and profound humanity, he vigorously defended the identity, mission, and role of Catholics in Italian society.

I am honoured to have known him, to have formed a close bond of friendship with him, and to have had the opportunity to draw on his valuable teachings. 

He was one of the most clear-thinking minds in Italian society and I hope that his spiritual, cultural, and human legacy will be carried forward as it deserves, bearing new and generous fruits.
