Chief Executive John Lee said the visit of two People's Liberation Army (PLA) vessels to Hong Kong showcased the country’s technological capabilities in national defence.
The two vessels -- guided-missile destroyer Nanning and guided-missile frigate Hengyang -- entered Hong Kong waters on Thursday morning.
In a welcome ceremony, Lee said the five-day visit showed Beijing's care and support for Hong Kong.
The CE said Nanning was independently developed by the country, showcasing the achievements in national defence and military development, as well as breakthroughs in technology.
The two ships’ visit would also cultivate a sense of patriotism in the SAR, he said.
“The vessels are open for public visits, providing us with a valuable opportunity to experience first-hand the strength of our country’s military power,” Lee said.
“Through interaction and exchanges with soldiers, youngsters can learn the spirit of discipline, resilience and dedication to the country. This serves as a vivid lesson in patriotic education.”
A navy officer, Lei Xiao, said various exchange activities including training displays, military experiences and performances would be held during the fleet’s visit to Hong Kong, so that Hong Kong people can learn more about the nation's military development.
“All officers of the fleet feel deeply honoured for the mission and we are looking forward to meeting Hong Kong residents at the naval base on Stonecutters Island,” he said.
“When I stood on the deck and saw the welcoming crowds, I could feel the enthusiasm of the public. I believe this enthusiasm will surely become a driving force in our journey to build a stronger military.”
Both vessels will be open to public visits at the PLA Hong Kong Garrison's naval base on Stonecutters Island this weekend.
