Grease backlog prompts stricter enforcement on eateries

Authorities have renewed calls for restaurants to maintain grease traps or face steeper penalties after removing approximately 1,500 kilograms of grease from sewers this week. The Public Works Bureau (DSOP) said that pipe blockages between Rua dos Mercadores and Rua da Madeira required urgent mechanical cleaning. Officials warned that poorly maintained traps could allow fats to enter public drains, undermining hygiene and flood control during heavy rain. Under Law No. 5/2026, fines now range from MOP 10,000 to MOP 30,000, with possible closure for severe violations.
