Sources say lawmaker William Wong was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving on Monday night.
It's believed his vehicle hit two cars parked at an outdoor car park on the Chinese University campus.
The lawmaker is associate dean of the faculty of engineering at the university.
Wong, 66, is said to have returned to a university staff residence after the accident, and failed to pass a breathalyser test when police officers arrived on campus to investigate the case.
No one is believed to have been injured.
The case was classified as traffic accident, careless driving, failing to stop and report after an accident, as well as drink-driving.
Officers at the New Territories South Regional Headquarters are following up on the case.
