Informal meeting in Brussels on migration management

In the margins of the European Council meeting, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, together with the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, and the Dutch Prime Minister, Rob Jetten, held another informal meeting today with some of the Member States that have the most interest in innovative solutions for the management of migration. 

In addition to Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands and the European Commission, the meeting was also attended by Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, and Sweden.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined the main areas of the Commission’s work regarding migration, focusing in particular on the possible migratory consequences deriving from developments in the Middle East crisis, and on the initiatives needed to provide an effective and timely European response.

During the meeting, participants expressed appreciation for the results achieved over the last few months, including the creation of an EU list of safe countries of origin, the introduction of the new safe third country concept, the adoption of the Chisinau Declaration on migration, the political agreement on the new Return Regulation, and, most recently, the inclusion of a reference to EU financial support for innovative migration management solutions as part of the negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework.

President Meloni stressed the need to move rapidly from the definition of new rules to their concrete implementation, starting with the Return Regulation. Making reference to the joint letter sent today together with Prime Minister Frederiksen and another 17 EU Heads of State and Government, President Meloni highlighted the importance of swiftly launching concrete and replicable pilot projects. In this regard, during the leaders’ discussion, an interest emerged in also considering the possibility of joint return centres in third countries.
