Een chemiebedrijf uit het Groningse Farmsum heeft de afgelopen drie jaar zo'n 5 miljoen kilo afvalzout illegaal laten dumpen nabij de Belgisch-Nederlandse grens, blijkt uit onderzoek van Follow The Money (FTM) en BN De Stem. Dit zou tot ernstige bodemverontreiniging in de grensregio hebben geleid. Het Openbaar Ministerie heeft een strafrechtelijk onderzoek ingesteld. Het chemiebedrijf dat van de illegale dumpingen wordt verdacht is Dutch Glycerin Refinery (DGR), gevestigd op het Chemie Park Delfzijl in Farmsum. Het bedrijf produceert glycerine, dat gebruikt wordt in cosmetica en in schoonmaakmiddelen. Hierbij komt veel afvalzout vrij. Het bedrijf wist lange tijd van het zout af te komen door het als strooizout aan te bieden. De laatste jaren werd dat vanwege de mildere winters steeds lastiger. Ook de milieueisen voor strooizout werden steeds strenger. Drugslabs Volgens FTM en BN De Stem kwam het afvalzout vanaf 2023 via tussenpersonen terecht bij twee handelaren in België. DGR zou het zout hebben gepresenteerd als een bodemverbeterend middel voor de agrarische sector. De tussenhandelaren Geert H. en Peet W. verkochten het zout door, verspreidden het op landbouwgronden en begroeven het onder gesloopte stallen en onder akkers. Dit gebeurde in de omgeving van Baarle-Nassau. Op sommige plaatsen was het grondwater uiteindelijk zo zout als zeewater, ontdekten Belgische inspecteurs. Peet W. is eerder veroordeeld voor mestfraude. Bij panden op naam van Geert H. zijn in het verleden drugslaboratoria ontdekt. Afvalzout in grote hoeveelheden uitstrooien op landbouwgrond is funest voor de bodemkwaliteit, zegt Angelique Huijben, voorzitter van de Zuidelijke Land- en Tuinbouworganisatie (ZLTO) tegen de NOS. "Te veel zout is voor heel veel gewassen niet goed. Kijk naar Zeeland: daar is veel grond onbruikbaar door het zoute zeewater." Ze noemt het gebruik van zoutafval als bodemverbeteraar "crimineel". Bodemecoloog Ciska Veen onderschrijft dit: "Al het leven, planten en dieren, kan slecht tegen zout. Dit kan lange gevolgen hebben." Strafrechtelijk onderzoek Door het zout illegaal te dumpen, bespaarde het Groningse bedrijf ongeveer 1 miljoen euro per jaar, ontdekten FTM en BN De Stem. Een woordvoerder van DGR ontkent tegenover BN De Stem dat het bedrijf het afvalzout als bodemverbeteraar heeft aangeboden. "Er zijn wel afnemers geweest die mogelijkheden zagen om dit zout als bodemverbeteraar in de markt te zetten." Ook zegt het bedrijf dat de leveringen aan "de betrokken afnemer per direct zijn stopgezet". Volgens de Omgevingsdienst Groningen heeft het bedrijf betaald voor de afvoer van het zout. Dat was daarmee geen afval, maar een product, zo stelt de dienst. Volgens FTM was DGR ervan op de hoogte dat het zout via tussenhandelaren op landbouwgrond terechtkwam. Het zout zou ook zijn geëxporteerd naar Polen en Duitsland. De Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport zegt dat in het strafrechtelijk onderzoek wordt samengewerkt met de Duitse, Belgische en Poolse autoriteiten. Geert H. en Peet W. zijn volgens de Belgische justitie officieel verdachte in de zaak. Huijben van ZLTO hoopt dat het tot een veroordeling komt. "De bodem is alles voor een boer. De grond moet kloppen. Als dat niet klopt, is de bodem onder je bestaan weg." DGR is onderdeel van de Musim Mas Group, een Indonesisch voedselverwerkingsbedrijf. Het bedrijf wordt gezien als een grote speler op het gebied van palmolieproductie en de verwerking daarvan.
