The restrictions come as Yerevan pursues closer European ties — and ahead of parliamentary elections in the South Caucasus country.

The restrictions on fruit and vegetable imports come a day after Moscow threatened to rip up a natural gas agreement with Yerevan.

"Putin has repeatedly stressed that it is impossible to belong to" both the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union, Kremlin adviser Yury Ushakov said.
The measure is the latest in a series of restrictions on Armenian goods introduced as relations between Moscow and Yerevan deteriorate.
Rosselkhoznadzor claimed the ban, which takes effect on Thursday, is aimed at protecting domestic plant safety and domestic producers.
