Deadly attack on migrants highlights issue of labour abuse in Italy

Four migrants working as fruit pickers in slave-like conditions in southern Italy have been burned to death in a grisly murder case that is prompting fresh national soul-searching over labour exploitation. The migrants were found on Monday in a burned-out ‌van parked in a petrol station in Amendolara, in the southern region ⁠of Calabria. Surveillance cameras showed two people setting the car alight before running away. FRANCE 24's Seema Gupta reports from Rome.

'El Niño turbocharging climate change', warns Gareth Redmond-King

Oliver Farry is pleased to welcome Gareth Redmond-King, Head of the International Programme at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit. As the World Meteorological Organization warns of a powerful El Niño event and its potentially far-reaching consequences, Redmond-King warns that El Niño should not be viewed as an isolated threat, but rather as an accelerant acting upon an already destabilised climate system. El Niño is "pouring fuel on that particular fire" of climate change. He describes the phenomenon as "turbocharging climate change" by adding heat to a planet that has already warmed by approximately 1.4°C. "It's like we're in a very, very hot room and somebody decides to turn on the heating and light the fire," he observes, illustrating how natural climate cycles become more dangerous in an artificially warmed world.

'I can't breathe': protesters clash with police over handcuffed dying student

Protests erupted in the UK after a video emerged of a dying student being handcuffed by police. Eighteen-year-old Henry Nowak was heard repeatedly telling officers: "I can't breathe" after he was stabbed by a Sikh man who falsely accused him of racial abuse. The far right have seized on the case, saying white British people are treated as second class citizens by the police. This is despite a UK government report in 2024 which found that black people were 2.2 times as likely to be arrested as white people. The UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the bodycam footage was "harrowing" and there would be an investigation into police conduct.

‘Chased like dogs’: Anti-migrant mobs in South Africa force foreigners to flee

Hundreds of foreign nationals have been forced to flee their homes in South Africa after violent anti-migrant mobs began chasing them down. Weeks of violent protests have led to the deaths of at least five nationals of Mozambique, that country's government said, adding that roughly 300 had fled back over its border Saturday. Ghana and Nigeria have organised emergency repatriation flights.

France's recognition of its role in 1994 Rwanda genocide marks historic turning point

François Picard is pleased to welcome Juliette Bour, historian and author of a forthcoming book in French entitled "Like Men: Women Politicians Complicit in the Rwandan Genocide". More than three decades after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, France continues to confront difficult questions about its political, military and diplomatic role during one of the most horrific atrocities of the 20th century. The inauguration of a memorial and monument in Paris, attended by President Emmanuel Macron, marks another step in a long and contentious process of historical reckoning.

Japan keeps traditional samurai horse festival alive by adapting to climate change

For more than a millennium, Japan has celebrated its samurai heritage with armoured horseriders charging through the countryside during its annual Soma Nomaoi festival. Up until two years ago, the tradition was threatened by soaring summer temperatures brought on by climate change. Organisers have decided to adapt, relieving riders and horses alike by switching the event to the spring.

French slavery law repealed: 'Now we can start talking about reparations,' historian says

Now that France has finally repealed the so-called Code Noir or Black Code, experts are urging the country to also consider the issue of reparations. The Code Noir was the law that effectively regulated slavery by making people like property, notably in the French colonies – enabling people to be worked, beaten, sold, raped and even killed. It was only repealed last week, even though France abolished slavery back in 1848. In Perspective, we spoke to Olivette Otele, a historian and professor at SOAS in London.

'Peaky Blinders' star Joe Cole and director Clio Barnard on class, masculinity and modern Britain

Premiering in the Directors' Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival, "I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning" is Clio Barnard's adaptation of Keiran Goddard's acclaimed novel about five childhood friends from working-class Birmingham whose lives have drifted far from the futures they once imagined. "Peaky Blinders" actor Joe Cole stars as Rian – the one who escaped, made money and seemingly "made it", only to discover that success cannot free him from the place he came from.

'To start somewhere else is like a rebirth': Franco-American band Fleur bleu·e

A group formed in Paris but now based in the US have told FRANCE 24 that the move has been like a rebirth for their music. Fleur bleu·e were created by a couple who lived above a bar in Paris, but swapped that life for one in a small town in the woods of Pennsylvania. They sing in both French and English as their aim is to address their music beyond France. Their new album is called "Question Marked Upon the World". Fleur bleu·e spoke to us in Perspective.

Nuclear issue remains key obstacle in Iran-US deal
