On the morning of June 3, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone strike on the St. Petersburg region, injuring several people — the exact number was never disclosed — and hitting an oil terminal and infrastructure facilities in Kronstadt. The Leningrad region’s governor, Alexander Drozdenko, said 59 drones were shot down over the region that day. A correspondent for the independent journalism cooperative Bereg visited the neighborhoods hit by the strikes and filed this report from the city in the aftermath of the attack, which came on the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Russia has spent more than a year and hundreds of lives fighting to capture one small village in Ukraine. So why can’t it take Mala Tokmachka?

A video compilation of statements by pro-Kremlin pundit Boris Rozhin about the Russian military’s endless assault on the village of Mala Tokmachka in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region surfaced in mid-April and quickly became the most popular military meme so far in 2026. The village’s name had already appeared regularly in dispatches from Russian milbloggers as “nearly cleared” — week after week, month after month. As the meme evolved, it took on a range of meanings, becoming a commentary on the lies of Russian military officials and their blogger allies, and a symbol of the senselessness of a war in which hundreds of lives have been spent fighting over a single small village. The name has also been used as shorthand for the gap between the Russian military’s ambitions and its capabilities (“We’ll take Tokmachka — then we march on Europe”). Ukrainian media outlets and bloggers, meanwhile, have turned Mala Tokmachka into a symbol of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ resilience. By their count, the battle has lasted more than 1,500 days, ostensibly longer than any successful defense in world history. Russian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Hilarion released without charges in Czech Republic. Two days ago, drugs were found in his car.

Czech police have released Metropolitan Hilarion, a Russian Orthodox Church clergyman serving at a church in Karlovy Vary, along with the camera operator who was with him at the time of his detention. The releases were announced in Hilarion’s Telegram channel.

Statements by Ruslan Kutayev — president of the Assembly of Peoples of the Caucasus and a member of the PACE platform representing Russia’s indigenous peoples — are generating widespread debate in the Russian opposition. In an interview with a Ukrainian YouTube channel, he said that when the time comes, Chechens will “return to Moscow” and control the Russian capital so that it “doesn’t get uppity with the surrounding peoples.” Journalist Alexander Plushev later invited Kutayev onto his program to clarify remarks that may have been misunderstood, but the conversation produced several more explosive statements: Kutayev justified “honor killings” and compared queer people to “outcasts” and “perverts,” saying they should not “put themselves on display.” Human rights advocates and journalists are now demanding that Kutayev be removed from his role at PACE and asking how he came to be there in the first place.
