Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day review – dreamy adaptation reaches for the stars

SXSW London Wolf’s novel about a headstrong young Edwardian woman takes flight under Tina Gharavi’s direction, with Timothy Spall and Jennifer Saunders among the ensemble cast Here is an adaptation, written by Justine Waddell, of Virginia Woolf’s peculiar and tonally elusive work that is all about the quarterlife crisis of a headstrong, well-born young woman in Edwardian London faced with the necessity of getting married. What emerges is a wayward, unworldly fantasia, a four-leaf clover of a film – or even five-leaf; rather beautifully designed and photographed, flavoured with a wistful, unexpectedly Germanic kind of romanticism. Waddell and Iranian-born director and Bafta nominee Tina Gharavi have creatively gone against the grain of the novel, amplifying Woolf’s single glancing reference to astronomy and making that the centre of the heroine’s yearning, perhaps playfully implanting a subconscious memory of Cole Porter’s lyrics to the song of the same title: “You are the one, only you beneath the moon, under the sun ….” And – thankfully, in my view – the film removes Woolf’s supercilious condescension towards the self-betterment of newly educated lower and middle classes, and instead focuses on a sweet-natured story, performed with conviction by its all-star ensemble cast, interspersed with dreamlike set pieces. The result is not precisely Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day; maybe more EM Forster’s Night and Day or even Ronald Firbank’s Night and Day. Continue reading...

Fuck the Polis review – cryptic docu-essay is a sphinxlike studty of Greek myth and modernity

This film may be making a point about the classical vis a vis the contemporary, but its visual collages and dense poetic texts render it inert The title of this lyrical but frustrating docu-essay about director Rita Azevedo Gomes’s travels in Greece cuts both ways. Is it expressing impatience with the classical ideals she hopes to discover there; or, borrowed from street graffiti, is it actually critiquing the modern society that has betrayed ancient standards of beauty and harmony and, in the words of Albert Camus cited here, “has fed its despair on ugliness and convulsions”? Nostalgic aspirations and the sobering here-and-now vie for supremacy in the texts recited by Gomes and others over travelogue images from Athens and the Cyclades beyond. As if echoing heroic voyagers past, she adds a layer of fictionalisation to her exploits, reading a poem written by João Miguel Fernandes Jorge based on a journey there in 2007; it becomes the story of Irma, who romances a young man, Ion, on the island of Delos, birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. But the affair founders – and there are other reality-checks, such as the incongruous Chinese cargo ships that now traverse the 21st-century Aegean. Continue reading...

Rafa review – Netflix’s documentary couldn’t have gotten closer to Spain’s greatest ever tennis player

This is access-all-areas viewing, with this four-parter talking at length to Nadal, his wife, his coaches and opponents. But that doesn’t necessarily make it insightful… There’s a lovely sequence in the second episode of this four-part documentary about the career of Spain’s greatest ever tennis player. It’s 2007 and Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal are walking on to Wimbledon’s Centre Court to play the first of the many finals they would contest. Federer is poised and slightly smug; hair flopping perfectly over his headband, dressed in an immaculate white blazer. Nadal trails behind him, wearing a vest and baggy shorts, shaggy hair flowing and eyes wild, looking for all the world like a beautiful young caveman. It captures his initial appeal perfectly: in his early years, Nadal was elemental, athletic beyond description and impossibly charismatic: equal parts tennis player, action hero and acrobat. It feels like our sporting legends are increasingly reluctant to leave the stage. Lionel Messi (38) and Cristiano Ronaldo (41) will both be at this summer’s football World Cup. One of England’s greatest ever cricketers, James Anderson, turns 44 this year and is still plying his trade in the County Championship. Becoming unsurpassably brilliant at something requires laser focus, but unlike music or acting or writing, there’s a definitive best before date. And once that date has passed, a big, scary void looms. If the miracles of modern medicine allow you to continue, it’s clearly incredibly hard to walk away. Rafa is on Netflix Continue reading...

Spider-Noir review – Nicolas Cage’s stylish take on the superhero as a 1940s detective is huge fun

All smoke, shady dames and black and white cinematography, Marvel’s latest Spidey offering is fast, witty and confident As is increasingly, wearyingly, the case as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand/bloat/chase the dollar in an ever-more unseemly and less rewarding manner – delete according to taste – Prime Video’s new series, Spider-Noir, requires you to set aside some lore while retaining other bits. Thus I should point out that the arachno-inflected human being brought to you here is played by Nicolas Cage but is not the spider character that he played in 2018’s Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse, although he sounds a lot alike. That one was called Peter Parker, as is traditional. This one’s called Ben Reilly. Why you would still cast one of the most divisively idiosyncratic performers in modern cinematic history – who can no more be dissociated from any of his previous parts by the average human brain than the concept of sourness can be uncoupled from a lemon, sweetness from honey, or Nigel Farage’s face from that of a melting frog’s – is beyond me, but I guess … that’s Hollywood? As the title suggests, Spider-Noir has been conceived as a homage to the hard-boiled films and fictions of the 1940s. The whole thing was filmed in black and white and digitally colourised thereafter, so that viewers can choose in which form they want to watch it. I look forward to online wars breaking out over this issue, upon which I shall remain Switzerland. Except to say that the decision to colourise a noir homage was a craven one in the first place – never give the people what they want! – and the decision to watch such a version is worse. 007 First Light review – a triumphant James Bond game made by obsessive fans

PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5; IO Interactive The stealth masters behind Hitman go loud for this game about Bond’s brilliant beginnings Given that we’ve not had a great James Bond video game in decades – or any Bond film at all in five years – there’s a lot of pressure on 007 First Light to reinvigorate a British cinematic hero. But developer IO Interactive has been auditioning for this role for some time. It’s there in the globetrotting nature of its Hitman assassination games, starring a besuited hero who knows how to turn a soiree to his deadly purpose; then there’s the developer’s evident eye for corporate opulence and brutalist architecture. Even their in-house game engine, Glacier, sounds like a secret codename cooked up in a Bond villain’s lair. All it would take is a slight shift in Hitman’s moral compass – more old boys club, fewer old boys clubbed – to turn IO’s familiar series into a Bond game with minimal fuss. 007 First Light refuses that easy route. We join young Bond in his pre-00 days, as a petulant, belligerent rule-breaking trainee. Actor Patrick Gibson begins as a cookie-cutter insubordinate, but warms to the role once he’s bouncing off M (herself a green leader looking to make her mark), and an enjoyably urbane Q who drops the frustrated quartermaster routine and introduces Bond to the wonders of vinyl. A scene where he teaches our agent to tie a bow tie is a perfect bit of prequelcraft: arriving at an iconic look through a lovely character touch. Continue reading...

Fairyland review – moving memoir of queer parenting and new kinds of family in 70s San Francisco

Andrew Durham’s tender adaptation of Alysia Abbott’s book finds warmth, humour and heartbreak in an unconventional family unit shaped by love and loss For anyone familiar with the Bay Area in the 1970s and 80s, this offers a glorious wallow in nostalgia, from the grainy archive footage of San Francisco Gay Freedom parades to the novelty of sushi at a book launch and the new wave hairstyles. But this film is not just about the set dressing and the costumes; at the story’s core is what was then a new kind of family. A gay father raises his young daughter in San Francisco after his wife, her mother, is killed in a car accident; they live first in a squalid commune in the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood and later move to slightly more bougie digs. The dad, Steve (Scoot McNairy), is a man with his foot only half out of the closet when the tragedy happens. He loves his daughter Alysia (Nessa Dougherty, then Coda’s Emilia Jones as a teen) deeply and turns down an offer from his ultra-straight mother-in-law (Geena Davis) to raise the little girl. Nevertheless, Steve is also a bit selfish and neglectful, likely to convince himself that he’s teaching Alysia independence when, for example, he tells her to get a bus across town instead of picking her up from school. There are echoes of the parenting techniques showcased in Marielle Heller’s adaptation of The Diary of a Teenage Girl which was set in a similar period, except that Alysia ends up a little less damaged than the heroine of that story. In fact, she turns out as independent and resilient as her father hoped she’d be, even if she never learned to ride a bicycle. Continue reading...

‘I’m an absolute gurner. I’m worried’: The Archers stars on their flower power stage show

The hallowed radio show is celebrating 75 glorious years – by stepping out of the studio and on to the stage. We sent the Guardian’s food writer (and Ambridge obsessive) along to meet her heroes and find out more I’m very careful not to betray my true levels of excitement when I speak to The Archers actor Susie Riddell, before a nationwide theatre tour to mark the rural radio drama’s 75th anniversary. I may be an Ambridge superfan but I still don’t want to scare the horses (nor indeed the cows, pigs or sheep). Riddell’s character Tracy Horrobin (who will be appearing with husband, Jazzer, local lush Lilian and cravat-wearing criminal Brian) is not one to hold back however: “It’s like a dream come true for me too!” she confides, slipping easily into broad Borsetshire. “I never thought I’d see the day that I was interviewed by the Guardian. I’ve seen it in the Bull!” The Bull, for the uninitiated, is a half-timbered pub on the village green offering ale, artisanal food and, it seems, copies of the Guardian. It’s a thrilling thought: I briefly entertain the idea of rock star turned vegan baker turned wedding caterer turned pub chef Fallon sitting in the snug, poring over my pie recipes in the Guardian. But it’s stretching credibility to believe an old-fashioned village boozer would find room for any reading material more substantial than Farmers Weekly. Tosca review – Puccini’s high-octane bloodbath bonanza makes for a shocking festival kick-off

Glyndebourne, Sussex Caitlin Gotimer’s Tosca goes from 0-60 in mere moments while the London Philharmonic unlock the barely contained violence in Ted Huffman’s long-awaited exceptional staging Giacomo Puccini died only a decade before the first Glyndebourne festival opened. 92 years later, Tosca – global operatic blockbuster and the work once derided as a “shabby little shocker” – has finally made its Glyndebourne debut, opening the 2026 festival with a high-octane bloodbath presided over by director Ted Huffman. Forget shabbiness (and not just because of the champagne and tuxedos); this show is all about the shock. But Huffman and conductor Robin Ticciati also play the dramatic long game. The curtain goes up on a mid-20th-century church interior. There are wooden pews and a small Madonna and child on the wall. Boys in uniform assist men in cassocks; there’s a real mop bucket, a real wooden ladder for the artist-hero and real mid-century modern spotlights to illuminate his work (the first of many exquisite details of this production’s lighting). It’s not 1800, but this is unmistakably Tosca, its accoutrements familiar. Continue reading...
