아서 그레그 설즈버거 미국 뉴욕타임스(NYT) 회장 겸 발행인(사진)이 1일(현지 시간) 인공지능(AI) 기업들의 뉴스 콘텐츠 무단 활용을 강하게 비판했다. 생성형 AI가 정당한 비용을 지불하지 않고 뉴스 콘텐츠를 도용하고 있다는 것. 그러면서 언론사들이 지속 가능한 취재 환경을 확보하기 위해 빅테크들을 상대로 권리를 지켜내야 한다고 강조했다. 이날 세계신문협회(WAN-IFRA) 주최로 프랑스 마르세유에서 개막한 제77회 ‘세계 뉴스미디어 총회 2026(WNMC 2026)’ 개막식 기조연설에 나선 설즈버거 회장은 “AI 기업들이 전례 없는 규모로 자행된 뻔뻔한 지식재산권 절도로 공론장을 강탈하고 있다”고 말했다. 그는 “빅테크들이 보상 없이 뉴스 웹사이트를 긁어가 훔친 것을 자신들의 것으로 재포장하면서 언론사로 갔어야 할 독자와 수익을 빼돌리고 있다”며 “이는 매일 수없이 반복되고 있다”고 했다. 실제로 NYT는 빅테크를 상대로 한 데이터 무단 사용 소송에 앞장서고 있다.
