Bij een schietpartij op een festival in de Amerikaanse staat Ohio zijn twaalf mensen gewond geraakt. Twee van hen verkeren in kritieke toestand, melden lokale autoriteiten. De politie heeft nog niemand opgepakt. Er is nog veel onduidelijk over wat er precies is gebeurd. De politiechef van Toledo, waar de schietpartij plaatsvond, zei dat het erop leek dat "minstens twee personen betrokken waren die waarschijnlijk op elkaar schoten". De schietpartij vond plaats om 17.30 lokale tijd tijdens The Old West End Festival. Dat is een jaarlijks tweedaags festival in het historische centrum van de stad met livemuziek, voedselkraampjes en rondleidingen door Victoriaanse huizen en winkels. Het wordt gezien als de aftrap van Toledo's festivalseizoen. Ze omschrijven de situatie als "totale chaos". Bezoeker Kevin Berry zei dat hij met zijn vrienden op straat naar livemuziek zat te luisteren toen hij schoten hoorde. "Iedereen ging liggen", zegt hij tegen persbureau AP. Toen hij weer naar boven keek, zag hij dat een pistool op minder dan 15 meter afstand van hem op de grond werd gegooid. Volgens hem reageerden politieagenten die rondliepen op het festival op het incident. Berry, die een medische opleiding heeft gevolgd en in de Amerikaanse marine heeft gediend, zei dat hij door het gebied liep op zoek naar potentiële slachtoffers die hulp nodig hadden. Hij zei dat hij minstens vijf mensen met schotwonden had gezien. Mike DeWine, de gouverneur van Ohio zegt diep bezorgd te zijn over de situatie. "Zomerfestivals moeten veilige plekken zijn voor gezinnen om samen tijd door te brengen zonder angst voor geweld."
