It’s genuinely a combination of both: mayhem that is very well organised. Making a show from scratch from Monday to Saturday is going to be chaotic but they’ve got the best of the best in the crew. All the wardrobe people, the camera crew, the set designers … they’re just incredible. There have been moments I’ve thought: are we going to pull this off? But every single time, we manage brilliantly. Where were you when you got the call saying you were going to be a cast member? In Daniel Sloss’s bedroom. He woke me up … To be honest, I have no idea. Clarkson’s Farm review – you might as well call him Jeremy Kardashian

From his multi-million pound beer brand to souvenir emporium flogging cufflinks, there’s such a cult of personality around the bumbling berk now that he’s basically morphing into Kim, Khloé et al. Stick to the farming, Jeremy! By now, five series in, the fatal flaw at the heart of Clarkson’s Farm has become unignorable. Ultimately, this is meant to be a show about failure; about an oafish man who wades in to an industry he knows little about and mucks everything up. Except, well, it isn’t that any more, is it? Because in real life, Clarkson’s Farm has become so successful that Clarkson has now essentially colonised the entire Cotswolds in his image. His Farmer’s Dog pub is now such an attraction that it recently had to turn a nearby field into a 360-space car park – the same as a large supermarket – to cope with demand. His Diddly Squat farm shop is a souvenir emporium, catering to anyone who wants to buy branded hats and cufflinks, or to own a jar of honey with Clarkson’s face on it. And this isn’t even mentioning his Hawkstone beer brand, which reported sales of £21.3m in the year to March 2025 and has a stated goal of putting Peroni “out of business”. Tonight the Music Seems So Loud by Sathnam Sanghera review – a heartbreaking portrait of George Michael

This affecting exploration of the troubled genius’s impact is packed with anecdote, sharp analysis and social context In 1998, George Michael was arrested for public lewdness in an LA lavatory, an incident that finally led the singer to publicly come out. The following day, Sathnam Sanghera found himself unable to leave his room at university: the doorway had been mockingly plastered with tabloid newspaper headlines – “ZIP ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO!” – by fellow students aware of his longstanding fandom. As a writer, Sanghera is best known for a series of award-winning books on the British empire, which he calls his “specialist subject”. Judging by Tonight the Music Seems So Loud – not a biography so much as a miscellany, a set of themed essays that tend to digress in all kinds of intriguing directions – the life and work of one Georgios Panayiotou runs imperialism and its legacy a very close second. It is an unashamedly partisan book, although not an uncritical one. Sanghera is as alive to Michael’s personal and professional failings (whether the naffness of some of his early work as one half of Wham! or his high-handed treatment of the duo’s other half, Andrew Ridgeley) as he is in love with his artistic triumphs. These, of course, range from Careless Whisper and Wham!’s annually inescapable Last Christmas to the 1996 solo masterpiece Older, a peculiar and peculiarly effective cocktail of raw grief at the Aids-related death of his lover Anselmo Feleppa and unrepentant horniness. Mandelson private messages to be released today – UK politics live

Sources predict ‘toe-curling’ revelations as more than 1,000 pages of documents relating to his appointment as US ambassador to be published Mandelson files show no mitigation of security concerns Good morning. Many people despair at the quality of governance in Britain at the moment, but in one respect we are living through a golden age; if you are interested in contemporary history, and learning about what actually happens at the heart of government, then you can now – sometimes – access the sort of information never available before. Today the government is publishing a mass of information – apparently running to three volumes, and more than 1,000 pages – containing the private messages Peter Mandelson exchanged with government ministers and officials when he was ambassador to the US, and before his appointment. Last month a minister compared this to the evidence released as part of the Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war. But the Chilcot inquiry took place in the era before WhatsApp, and it was publishing secret memos – intended for circulation within Whitehall. WhatsApp messages are a lot more personal; reading them is like being able to eavesdrop on a private conversation. Mandelson is a man with spiky, controversial views, who loves gossip and plotting, and whose private views don’t always accord with what he has said in public. It should be fascinating. I think the level of transparency is going to be unprecedented. The volume of information that’s going to be put out is unprecedented. It’s right we do that. The Guest review – the risks of protecting refugees in the Poland-Belarus danger zone

Zvika Gregory Portnoy and Zuzanna Solakiewicz’s documentary lays bare the problems faced by refugees and the compassion of good samaritans It all begins with a knock. In a small Polish town on the border with Belarus, Maciek and his family have taken in 27-year-old Alhyder, a Syrian refugee seeking shelter from the freezing weather and police patrols. Since 2021, the area has become increasingly militarised after Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, in a purely political move, offered up the Belarussian border as a new migration route into the EU. In response, the Polish government created a 3-km zone where refugees and migrants are seized and deported back to Belarus. With humanitarian organisations also banned from the area, asylum seekers are now pawns in a political war game, with their lives continuously in danger. Laying bare the risks faced by both Maciek and Alhyder, Zvika Gregory Portnoy and Zuzanna Solakiewicz’s documentary intimately trails its subjects. Most of their conversations unfold in tense closeups, as Alhyder struggles to contact his group of fellow refugees; his host meanwhile keeps watch for the constant military presence in the neighbourhood. The film expands to take in other forms of resistance, such as a network of good samaritans who provide food, warm clothes and translation services for those hiding out in the forests. These acts of compassion shine a heartwarming light against the darkness of a humanitarian crisis. Continue reading...

My latest masterpiece – a house for toy farm animals! What my son learned from a day making art at home

Fed up with dragging your children out the door to visit famous artworks they’re too grumpy to appreciate? Channel your inner Miffy and you’ll find inspiration all around the house There’s a book about Miffy – the little white rabbit created by Dutch author Dick Bruna – going to a gallery that I can recite by heart. A fellow art critic friend posted it to my son soon after he was born; back then its pages were pristine, now they’re crumpled and torn. Another Miffy book on our shelves (the bunny’s a firm favourite) follows her as she makes half a dozen pictures at home, and, at the end of the day, puts them up on the wall. “That looks wonderful, Miffy,” says Mother Bunny. “It’s your very own gallery.” Her very own gallery in her very own home. We’ve been to museums and sculpture parks across the country. We’ve braved family drop-ins and an underground gallery dedicated to digital art. We’re lucky – so very lucky – that there’s great art on offer out there. But what about those days when it’s just easier to stay home? Days when it’s raining or the trains are cancelled or your child is refusing to put on their socks and shoes. From The Twits to The Gruffalo and an angry bear in search of his hat… Quentin Blake, Cressida Cowell, Axel Sheffler, Lauren Child and more reveal how they bring children’s books to life Spread across a sprawling 17th-century industrial complex in London’s Clerkenwell, the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, which opens next month, is being billed as the largest institution of its kind anywhere in the world: a permanent national home for an art form that shapes everything from children’s books and political cartoons to animation, fashion, advertising and digital culture. Part museum, part gallery and part creative laboratory, the centre represents an extraordinary attempt to drag illustration out of the margins and finally place it at the heart of British cultural life. Eventually the centre will become home to Blake’s own enormous archive: 40,000 drawings created by one of the UK’s best-known and most immediately recognisable artists. Now 93, Blake has spent three-quarters of a century bringing the words of some of our most beloved authors to life. Roald Dahl is the big one, of course – it’s impossible to think of Dahl without seeing Blake’s energetic, dip-pen pictures – but the list also includes Michael Rosen, John Yeoman, Sylvia Plath and Voltaire, as well as Blake’s own books. Cape Fear: Amy Adams is incredible in this twisty remake of the classic Scorsese thriller

Javier Bardem and his co-star are brilliant as the duelling pair at the heart of a dread-packed psychological drama – where evil lurks in plain sight The 1991 revenge thriller Cape Fear boasts many famous moments. A teddy bear rigged with fishing wire. A drowning man speaking in tongues. But the image I cannot shake is the back of a sailboat, piloted by a lawyer who is being hounded by Max Cady, a rapist he once sent to jail. The boat is called Moana. It makes sense – throughout Polynesia, moana means “ocean”. However, watching now, I can’t help but wonder if the Rock is going to appear and save the day with his magical pec tattoo. Martin Scorsese’s classic was a remake of a 1962 film, which was based on a 1957 novel. Recycling IP can feel depressing, but Cape Fear always stirs the pot. The 60s film, starring Gregory Peck as a morally upright man tormented by a senselessly evil one, had a Book of Job mystery to it. Scorsese’s version introduced sympathy for the devil, and a jaundiced view of its protagonist: a lawyer who buries evidence that might exonerate his client, whom he believes should go to jail. The high-water mark, though, is probably Cape Feare, the Simpsons parody featuring Sideshow Bob. (Best. Episode. Ever.) Continue reading...

‘How often I’m called a paedophile online is shocking’: inside Russell T Davies’s horrifying drama about rising hatred

The creator of It’s a Sin is back – and he’s furious. His new series Tip Top explores the rise of homophobia through a feud between two Manchester neighbours. He and stars Alan Cumming and David Morrissey talk death, fear and ‘joy as a form of protest’ Late at night on Manchester’s Canal Street, the heart of the city’s famous queer scene, two neighbours are at war. An escalating feud between gay bar manager Leo (Alan Cumming) and reserved, judgmental neighbour Clive (David Morrissey) shows no sign of abating. Yells from Leo are so loud they echo down the canal. The street is not closed to the public as their altercation plays out, so you can’t tell who in the background is an employee at Leo’s bar, Spit & Polish, who is a regular, and who is a member of the public out for their midweek pint. In the background, an ambulance’s lights flash while unflappable drag queens continue to flyer for their neighbouring bars. Russell T Davies’s Tip Toe, a new Channel 4 drama, looks at how political rhetoric, toxic online bullying and misinformation can add jet fuel to a feud between neighbours. The location of the series won’t be lost on viewers of Queer As Folk. The 1999 classic, which regularly featured scenes shot in Canal Street, followed the lives of three gay men, in a way that not only made being gay seem cool, it also reflected a new era of tolerance. Kinky hippos, foul-mouthed raccoons and heaps of heart: Big Mouth’s creators’ wild new animated comedy

This tale of a horny bear on a quest of sexual exploration after his partner leaves him during hibernation is certainly shocking. But can it match the sweetness of its predecessor? In the first minute of Netflix’s animated comedy Mating Season, a bear wakes up, urinates uncontrollably across his cave, stumbles outside, sees two horny raccoons banging away, then spirals into a deep well of shame about it. At this stage, it is barely worth pointing out that Mating Season is the spiritual successor to the outrageous, witty comedy Big Mouth, so completely does it inhabit that show’s DNA. And at this point, you will already know if the show is for you or not. Because Big Mouth, as popular as it was, polarised audiences like little else. That show was about the horrors of puberty and sexual awakening, and it was tailored with absolute precision to its target audience of hormone-battered adolescent boys. You could argue that it did this a little too precisely, because its juvenilia was so relentlessly nuclear-powered that plenty of people found themselves turned off by all the sex and farts and swearing. Risk-taking, rigour and radicalism – Daniel Harding is an exciting prospect for Los Angeles

Also, happy 125th to the Wigmore Hall, and, the vivid soundworld of 16th-century Spain A tale of two conductors on the west coast of America this week. Yesterday, the Los Angeles Philharmonic announced that Daniel Harding will be their next music director from 2027, which is also when Elim Chan starts her job leading the San Francisco Symphony. These are both forward-looking appointments, showing a commitment to the future of these orchestras and the art-form in California. Mind you, San Francisco’s situation looked pretty dire until recently, after the previous incumbent Esa-Pekka Salonen’s largely unrealised dreams of putting the orchestra at the heart of cultural and technological innovation. It made sense – why not use the San Fran orchestra as a Silicon Valley of the humanities, without the corporate evil, addictive algorithms and responsibility-free tech-brocracy? Alas: Salonen was stymied by the pandemic among other things, and made clear his artistic disagreements with the board in his letter of departure. Continue reading...

No Place for Football review – battling ice and snow to play the beautiful game in Greenland

Life is tough on the autonomous territory – not least for its footballers, as this documentary testifies As the football-industrial complex churns out ever more eyeball-aimed product, precision engineered to trigger either triumphalism or nostalgia (or both), there’s occasionally room for stories like this about Greenland’s eight team championship playoff: scrappy chronicles of big-hearted underachievers in obscure corners of the football universe. (One of them, about perennial losers American Samoa, even got turned into a feature film directed by Taika Waititi.) Could Greenland’s strugglers and strivers end up as characters in a big-screen comedy? Stranger things have happened and, after the country’s surprise arrival in the geopolitical spotlight, this might yet be the best way for outsiders to get some understanding of the place. As it is, one of the main virtues of this film is to convey just how tough life is in the world’s largest island (an “autonomous territory”, part of the kingdom of Denmark). We see the team captain, Patrick Frederiksen (a charismatic presence and one of the documentary’s main characters), moodily hunting for seals, giant icebergs floating yards away from the edge of a football pitch, and the non-appearance of half the team for the week-long playoffs due to cancelled flights (travelling by boat takes longer, but is more reliable). The team in question is the slightly unmemorably named B-67, who hail from Greenland’s capital Nuuk; they appear to have an Old Firm-ish sort of rivalry with Nagdlunguak, from the island’s third largest town, Ilulissat. The shortness of the playing season, it is regularly pointed out, is one of the main factors hampering Greenland’s football, as there are only a few short summer weeks where the place thaws enough for outdoor matches. The aforementioned travel issues mean, moreover, it’s almost impossible to arrange games against anyone other than local sides. Continue reading...

Fairyland review – moving memoir of queer parenting and new kinds of family in 70s San Francisco

Andrew Durham’s tender adaptation of Alysia Abbott’s book finds warmth, humour and heartbreak in an unconventional family unit shaped by love and loss For anyone familiar with the Bay Area in the 1970s and 80s, this offers a glorious wallow in nostalgia, from the grainy archive footage of San Francisco Gay Freedom parades to the novelty of sushi at a book launch and the new wave hairstyles. But this film is not just about the set dressing and the costumes; at the story’s core is what was then a new kind of family. A gay father raises his young daughter in San Francisco after his wife, her mother, is killed in a car accident; they live first in a squalid commune in the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood and later move to slightly more bougie digs. The dad, Steve (Scoot McNairy), is a man with his foot only half out of the closet when the tragedy happens. He loves his daughter Alysia (Nessa Dougherty, then Coda’s Emilia Jones as a teen) deeply and turns down an offer from his ultra-straight mother-in-law (Geena Davis) to raise the little girl. Nevertheless, Steve is also a bit selfish and neglectful, likely to convince himself that he’s teaching Alysia independence when, for example, he tells her to get a bus across town instead of picking her up from school. There are echoes of the parenting techniques showcased in Marielle Heller’s adaptation of The Diary of a Teenage Girl which was set in a similar period, except that Alysia ends up a little less damaged than the heroine of that story. In fact, she turns out as independent and resilient as her father hoped she’d be, even if she never learned to ride a bicycle. Continue reading...

From racy riders to romantic rivals: Jilly Cooper’s best books – ranked!

The second series of Rivals has put the bestselling author’s brand of saucy jollity back on screen, but what is her bonkbuster nonpareil? In the last of Jilly Cooper’s Rutshire Chronicles – her epic, engrossing sagas of bucolic life among horse-riding poshos – Rupert Campbell-Black, template-handsome cad turned loving husband, is now (I did the maths) 67. Taggie has cancer, which is bracing, since the Chronicles as a whole rarely brush with mortality. I was astonished to learn that Cooper did 15 months of rewrites, following interventions from a sensitivity reader; it is not that sensitive, certainly not on class. Bianca, Rupert and Taggie’s daughter, has fallen in love with a footballer (“from the gu’er” – the Ts are silent) and her father buys a local club to keep them both in the postcode. ‘A masterclass in lesbian eroticism’: why Bound is my feelgood movie

The latest in our ongoing series of writers celebrating their most rewatched comfort films is a pick for 1996’s revealing and relatable romantic thriller I’m not necessarily inclined towards what might typically be dubbed “feelgood”. No, you won’t find me seduced by a happy ending, nor am I partial to the oeuvre of Disney (in fact, I find all the talking animals and poreless princesses a bit grotesque). The raw edges and friction of feelbad have tended to be much better suited to my tastes: the porno chic slasher Knife+Heart, the sartorial murder of In Fabric and the snuff film-obsessed Thesis. Sex and gore, basically. For a long time, my favourite film was Crimes of the Future: a stomach-churning body horror about sexual-surgical experiments. However, there is one movie that reveals a slightly soft(er)core side to my viewing habits, which I frequently return to in order to feel the gushy feelings and butterflies of a school crush. That film is Bound. The 1996 directorial debut from the Wachowski sisters, the plot revolves around an opposites-attract scenario which is both familiar and high stakes: plumber Corky, and mafia moll Violet. When their eyes meet across an elevator, the tiny vestibule becomes thick with sexual tension: it is so on. Continue reading...
