Speaker rejects the Greens’ 'urgent motion' on a re-run of the vote on transition rules

Sweden’s Speaker of Parliament, Andreas Norlén, is refusing to allow a new vote in the Riksdag on transition rules for citizenship, news agency TT reports. This comes as a response to a so called "emergency motion" that was submitted by the Green Party's Annika Hirvonen last Friday asking for the vote to be re-run. The official name of this kind of motion is "a motion arising out of an occurrence of major significance" and Norlén says the unexpected outcome of a vote can not be seen as 'major', he said.

How companies in Europe are struggling to recruit workers from outside the EU

Almost half of European small and medium companies struggle to find workers with the skills they need but recruitment outside the EU remains “limited” and “too difficult”, a recent Eurobarometer survey published by the European Commission had shown.

New customs fee will make that cheap purchase from outside the EU more expensive

From July 1st a new customs fee will be introduced for products ordered from outside the European Union, which could significantly rack up the cost of your small purchase. For packages worth less than 150 euros a fee of three euros per product will be added, according to Swedish Customs. The new EU rules, which are to be applied across the union, are supposed to stop products that don't meet the EU's safety requirements, and to create healthier competition for companies inside the EU.

Employer groups predict lower growth ahead of wage negotiations

Ahead of Sweden's next big round of collective bargaining, several employer groups in Swedish industry say the economy is developing worse than previously expected. They have cut their growth forecast for this year, from about 3 to just over 2 per cent, and say there is no space for wage increases similar to the last two rounds of collective bargaining, when union wage demands rose to just over 4 per cent. Industry employers organisations Teknikföretagen and Industriarbetsgivarna speak about economic uncertainty, while trade unions in the industry sector have no plans to lower their wage demands.

Suspect shot dead by police after car chase near Nynäshamn

A man was shot dead by police outside Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, during a car chase on Tuesday evening. Police was called out just after 8pm about a suspected kidnapping and attempted murder and the suspect was located in a car on the motorway. After the car had crashed into the motorway barrier, one of the police officers opened fire at the man, who was killed.

EU calls on nine European countries to scrap internal Schengen border checks

The European Commission on Tuesday asked nine countries in the Schengen area, including France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy, Denmark and Norway to phase out internal border checks, which have been reinstated in some cases for years.

Sweden’s parties close Järvaveckan with pledges on homes, safety and school 'culture days'

The Järvaveckan political event ended over the weekend and representatives of all parties in parliament have now held their speeches. The Moderate Party representative spoke about the right to own your own flat and the Sweden Democrats spoke about freedom from violence, crime and too much meddling by the state. The leader of the Liberal Party promised a 'culture day' for school children in socio-economically vulnerable areas, to go visit a theater for example, while the Center Party leader in her speech focused on overcrowding and the housing shortage.

Sweden’s ‘94 World Cup anthem gets a next-gen reboot

The children of GES, the trio behind Sweden's best loved World Cup football anthem, "När Vi Gräver Guld i USA", have made a new version of their fathers' 1994 hit song to mark Sweden's return to American soil for the 2026 World Cup later this month. Thirty-two years ago, "När Vi Gräver Guld i USA" or, "When We Dig For Gold in the USA", provided a popular backdrop to Sweden's best ever World Cup on foreign soil, when they finished third. Citizenship: Greens make new bid for a transition rules re-vote — through a special motion

The Greens are still trying to get a re-vote on the question of transition rules for the government's new citizenship reforms, set to come in effect on June 6. The controversy around the vote on transition rules — which saw two paired-out Sweden Democrat MPs vote in the chamber, causing the opposition's motion to be voted down — led to the collapse of the pairing agreement between Sweden's political parties. Now the Greens are reportedly planning to file what's known as a "motion arising out of an occurrence of major significance" — listen to hear what that means.

Four in 10 Swedes wouldn't move north — even if they got SEK 100,000

Four in 10 Swedes would say no to moving to the country's north for work and where unemployment is lower, even if they were offered a SEK 100,000 relocation allowance. That's according to a survey from Indikator Opinion, carried out on behalf of Swedish Radio's local P4 channels. Most people are happy with the lives they have where they live, and money doesn't make much of a difference there, says Indikator's head of polling Per Oleskog Tryggvason.

Party support for increasing voter turnout cut to nearly half

While voter turnout among foreign-born Swedes is declining, political parties are getting less money to reach this group as well as others with low participation in elections. Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand tells Radio Sweden that parties will have to make do with the funding they get. Meanwhile a number of opposition parties are critical: "It's unfortunate," says the Left Party's party secretary Maria Forsberg.

Dozens of Swedish children identified in child pornography

Police have identified 49 children in Sweden who appear in child pornographic material, and who are suspected of having been victims of sexual assault. This follows a special operation, and according to police the children are from all over the country and range from infants to 18-year-olds. Police say their priority is working out the victims' identities: "Finding the children often means also finding the culprit," says Christer Andersson at the police's unit for internet-related sexual abuse of children.

Lundin Oil: Sweden's longest-running trial to conclude

Sweden's longest-running trial will come to a close on Thursday. It concerns the company Lundin Oil, and alleged involvement in human rights abuses in what's now South Sudan. Two former Lundin Oil executives are facing charges and could be sentenced to several years in prison if found guilty, while the company risks a multibillion kronor payment to the state, in addition to the approximately SEK 1 billion already spent on its defence. Current CEO of the company, Daniel Fitzgerald, says the case is "flawed" and "should never have seen the inside of a courtroom", and that the company has the weight of evidence on its side.
