LAHORE: The Punjab government has deferred its decision to restore original historical names of roads and streets in Lahore apparently on the pressure of some โextremist elements.โ The Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LAHR) held a huddle last March jointly presided over by PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The meeting had approved restoration of original historical names of roads and streets in Lahore and and its neighbourhood. Nawaz Sharif is the head of the LAHR. However, some extremist elements including vloggers took on CM Maryam on the decision by giving it a religious colour. The Punjab administration appears to have gone on the back foot and deferred the decision to avert backlash. โNo such decision has been taken as yet,โ Lahore Deputy Commissioner retired Capt. Muhammad Ali Ijaz replied to Dawnโs queries on Monday. A few days ago, the LHAR invited a gathering of scholars, historians, architects, urban planners, and prominent citizens seeking their suggestions on what the government called โproposalโ to restore the original historical names of roads, streets, and localities across Lahore. The meeting concluded with a consensus that Lahoreโs historic identity constituted an invaluable legacy, deserving thoughtful preservation for future generations. โMost of the participants spoke in favour of restoring the historical names of the roads and streets of Lahore,โ one of the participants told Dawn. Several historic (pre-Partition) streets and roads in Lahore have been renamed over the years, often replacing British-era or Hindu-associated names with those of Islamic, Pakistani, or local historical figures such as Queenโs Road was renamed Fatima Jinnah Road, Jail Road renamed Allama Iqbal Road, Davies Road renamed Sir Aga Khan Road, Lawrence Road renamed Bagh-i-Jinnah Road, Empress Road renamed Shahrah-i-Abdul Hameed bin Badees, Krishan Nagar renamed Islampura, Santnagar renamed Sunnat Nagar, Dharampura renamed Mustafabad, Brandreth Road renamed Nistar Road, Temple Street renamed Hameed Nizami, Laxmi Chowk renamed Maulana Zafar Ali Khan Chowk, Jain Mandir Road renamed Babri Masjid Chowk, Ram Gali renamed Rehman Gali, Kumharpura renamed Ghaziabad and Outfall Road was renamed Jilani Road. Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged the country on Monday to focus on fuel, fertiliser and foreign exchange and underlined Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs plea to conserve foreign exchange as โvery importantโ amid the Gulf crisis. Earlier this month, Modi called on Indians to conserve fuel and foreign exchange and avoid gold purchases, among other austerity measures, to better manage the energy shock and economic headwinds. โThe prime minister giving a call to conserve foreign exchange, as far as possible, is very important,โ Sitharaman said, adding that the stress on โ3Fsโ โ fuel, fertiliser and foreign exchange โ should be viewed in this context. India has been reeling under the effect of rising crude prices and supply disruptions after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the US-Israel war on Iran. High prices of crude, fertilisers and gold are creating some challenges on the external front, Sitharaman added, while speaking at an event in Mumbai. India, the worldโs third-largest oil importer and consumer, raised prices of petrol and diesel again on Monday, the fourth increase in May in a bid to recoup some losses. Sitharaman said that the Indian governmentโs revenue is expected to be hit by one trillion rupees in FY27 due to a reduction in excise duties on fuel.
Nigeriaโs military on Tuesday said that joint airstrikes with the United States had killed 175 Islamic State (IS) fighters in the countryโs northeast, including the militant groupโs global second-in-command. The remote region has been gripped by an extremist insurgency since 2009, first by Boko Haram, then its offshoot and rival, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). According to the United Nations, more than 40,000 people have been killed and two million others displaced. US and Nigerian forces killed Abu Bilal al-Minuki, an IS leader described as the โmost active terroristโ in the world, at a remote village in the northeast last weekend. The Nigerian military said on Tuesday that 175 IS militants had so far been โeliminated from the battlefieldโ. โThe joint strikes have resulted in the destruction of ISIS checkpoints, weapons caches, logistical hubs, military equipment and financial networks used to sustain terrorist operations,โ it added. As director of global operations for IS, al-Minuki provided strategic guidance on media and financial operations and โthe development and manufacturing of weapons, explosives and dronesโ, according to the Nigerian military and the US Africa Command (Africom). After the announcement of al-Minukiโs death, Nigeriaโs President Bola Ahmed Tinubu thanked his US counterpart, Donald Trump, for his โleadership and unwavering supportโ. He said he looked forward to โmore decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nationโ. Senior figures According to Tuesdayโs military statement, the operations in the last few days have killed other key IS figures. They include Abdal Wahhab, said to be a โsenior leaderโ of ISWAP, โresponsible for coordinating attacks and distributing propagandaโ. Abu Musa al-Mangawi was said to be a high-ranking ISWAP member, while Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir was a โsenior media production team manager and close confidant to al-Minukiโ. Boko Haram and ISWAP have recently stepped up their attacks on villages, police stations and workers such as loggers and fishermen, as well as military bases, causing the deaths of several civilians and senior army officers. The upsurge in attacks prompted Tinubu to declare a nationwide state of emergency in 2025 and the US president to threaten Nigeria with military intervention. Trump has claimed that Christians in Nigeria were being โpersecutedโ and victims of a โgenocideโ carried out by โterroristsโ. The government in Abuja and most experts reject the claim and point out that the violence generally affects Christians and Muslims without distinction. The US military, in coordination with the Nigerian authorities, carried out airstrikes on December 25 last year in the northwestern state of Sokoto, targeting what Washington called jihadists. Northern Nigeria has been grappling with violence from criminal gangs known locally as bandits, who frequently carry out attacks on villages and mass kidnappings for ransom. Africom has also taken action against IS and al-Shabaab militants in Somalia, intensifying airstrikes since the beginning of the year.
