Malaysia has begun barring those aged under 16 from registering accounts on social media platforms, its communications regulator said on Monday, as it boosts efforts to protect minors from exposure to harmful content online. The Southeast Asian nation joins a growing number of countries introducing measures to regulate access to online platforms, amid mounting concerns over the impact of social media on children’s health and safety. Starting Monday, social media platforms, including Meta Platforms’ Facebook and Instagram, TikTok, and Alphabet’s YouTube, must conduct age verification against government-issued records, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said. Fines up to 10 million ringgit ($2.5 million) may be levied against social media platforms that fail to comply. “The measure is not intended to prohibit child users from the internet or to deny them access to technology,” it said, rather it aims to boost responsibility among social media platforms, parents and guardians in protecting minors online. Age verification for existing users will be implemented by social media platforms over a six month-period. Malaysia has stepped up scrutiny of social media companies after finding a sharp rise in harmful online content in recent years, and is cracking down on material that deliberately tries to stir racial or religious tensions, or criticises the monarchy.

Rescuers pulled four people from a flooded cave in Laos on Saturday, Thai volunteer rescuers said, hours after another man was brought out late on Friday. The five are among seven Lao nationals who had entered the cave in Xaisomboun province to prospect for gold, but were trapped for more than a week when rising water blocked their exit. Two others remain missing. Kengkard Bongkawong, a Thai cave diver involved in the mission, said in a Facebook post on Saturday that all four of the trapped people had emerged from the cave. Video footage from the volunteers showed rescuers bringing four Laotian men out of the cave with flashlights strapped to their heads and with muddy clothes. They had joyful expressions on their faces, and some were crying with relief. The five rescued people were found by rescuers on Wednesday, but had remained trapped. Rescue officials said they would continue searching for the two missing people. A team of volunteers from neighbouring Thailand joined the rescue efforts last Sunday and further reinforcements, including divers from Finland, France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and Australia, have also joined the rescue operation, the volunteer group posted on Facebook. The international rescue team included some members who were involved in the 17-day rescue at the flooded mountain cave of Tham Luang in northern Thailand in 2018.
PTI senior leader Asad Qaiser on Saturday claimed he was prevented from reaching the Islamabad airport, resulting in him missing his flight to Skardu in connection with the ongoing election campaign in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). The incident comes just a day after PTI MNA Junaid Akbar and his team were expelled from GB while they were campaigning for the upcoming elections on June 7. Qaiser, also the secretary general of Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP), accused the Punjab police of not letting him “enter the Islamabad airport and closing the entry routes of the airport”. “The Punjab police kept me under detention till the flight took off,” he wrote on X, decrying that not only did he miss his flight, but ordinary citizens were also inconvenienced. Qaiser termed the incident an instance of undue obstruction in the electoral process and political victimisation. He alleged that efforts were being made to influence the electoral process in GB and that PTI was being hindered from carrying out its election campaign freely. The PTI leader expressed the hope that the people of GB would reject such tactics and exercise their right to vote freely. He reaffirmed his resolve that, despite all such restrictions, he will continue to participate in the election campaign. Videos shared by Qaiser showed a long queue of vehicles before the airport’s entry gate. The PTI leader also shared a video of him speaking with what appeared to be Punjab police officials, wearing the force’s olive coloured uniforms, urging them to at least let other passengers continue onward. PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram, while speaking to Dawn, highlighted that sitting federal ministers were participating in the GB election campaign, but PTI leaders were not being allowed to do the same. “Running an election campaign by sitting ministers is a clear violation of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) code of conduct, but unfortunately, the electoral watchdog is silent,” he said. Meanwhile, an Islamabad Police official, wishing not to be named, told Dawn that the airport was not under their jurisdiction. “We have come to know that a PTI leader has alleged that he was not allowed to enter the airport, but Islamabad police has nothing to do with it,” he said. PML-N’s Saad Rafique also misses flight Senior PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique also said he missed his flight to Skardu, accusing the Rawalpindi police of “obstructing all traffic heading to the airport”. In a post on Facebook, the former minister said he had to depart for Skardu for his party’s election campaign, but he and 12 others missed their flights. Rafique contended that no “reasonable explanation” was given for the traffic blockade, claiming that Air Blue also closed the boarding gates “before the scheduled time despite the forced traffic closure”. “Numerous women, children and elderly passengers around us were languishing in the hot weather,” he said, lamenting the extent of “indifference and incompetence”.

A local election in an industrial city in northern Italy is exposing differences over immigration between governing coalition parties and showing how the country’s rapidly changing social fabric is shaping politics. Surrounded by factories and rice paddies, Vigevano is a city of 62,000 people where 15 per cent of the population is foreign, including many people from Egypt and Romania. Many more are naturalised Italians and second-generation immigrants. Once a Communist Party bastion, the city is held by the League, a far-right junior partner in Italy’s ruling coalition whose leader Matteo Salvini has said citizenship should be revoked for second-generation immigrants who commit crimes. One of the two, Italian-Egyptian Hagar Haggag, 20, said she had received a slew of insults and threats since her candidacy was announced. She attributed the virulent reaction mainly to the fact that she wears a headscarf. She told AFP she had “never felt racism” in the local section of the party, pointing out that the former League mayor had allowed a Muslim prayer hall to open in a disused hangar in 2022. Haggag said she was also running because she wanted to “put an end to the left-wing cliche that Muslim women are ignorant”. She is studying diplomacy and is considering a political career beyond Vigevano — maybe even in Egypt. The other candidate, Ibrahim Hussein, is a spokesman for the local prayer hall who presented his bid “in the name of Allah”. Hussein wrote on Facebook that he chose to be a candidate for the League because he sees himself as “a real example of integration”. On the last day of campaigning on Friday in Vigevano’s majestic central square, Ghia said he “does not look at whether people are Muslim or Buddhist”, adding that whoever “respects the rules is a citizen with full rights”. Divisions between parties Italy is gearing up for national elections next year in a country that is becoming ever more multi-ethnic and where the political clout of second-generation immigrants is growing. The national leadership of the League said it was “distancing” itself from the candidates in Vigevano, which voted on Sunday and Monday. But Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party is supporting the candidates. Forza Italia, another coalition partner, is more open on immigration and integration but is supporting a different mayoral list. The divisions could be a boon for Roberto Vannacci, a former general who quit the League to set up a more radical far-right party called Futuro Nazionale (National Future). Vannacci was in Vigevano on May 17 for a speech laden with anti-immigrant rhetoric. The speech came a day after a young Italian man of Moroccan heritage with mental health problems rammed his car into pedestrians in the city of Modena, injuring eight people. The local candidate supported by National Future, lawyer Furio Suvilla, says his programme is focused on security. He has called for the army to intervene against groups of young people who gather around the station and wants the Muslim hall closed. He said he thinks he could “pick up quite a few League voters”. ‘Still a foreigner’ Candidates with foreign origins still remain relatively rare in Italian elections, where immigration has been more recent than in France or Germany, said sociologist Maurizio Ambrosini from Milan’s Statale university. Several right-wing parties “are trying to attract candidates with immigrant origins,” the sociologist said, adding that “many naturalised migrants tend towards the right”. Sabrine Hamrouni, 23, a health sector worker, is also a candidate in Vigevano but for the centre-left. She said she thinks divisions on the right could help boost her campaign. Hamrouni’s father moved from Tunisia to Vigevano in the 1990s to work in construction. “I was born here. I have always lived here but I am still a foreigner,” the candidate said. She said she wants to make Vigevano “a beautiful city — it will take a long time but I am willing to put in that time”.
Humanitarian worker Saad Edhi, who was illegally detained by Israeli forces during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters earlier this week, arrived in Karachi on Saturday. Saad was detained by Israeli forces on Monday along with around 100 other members of the humanitarian flotilla, after at least 10 boats were intercepted in the eastern Mediterranean. He landed at Jinnah International Airport today after being deported from Israel to Türkiye on Friday, along with other foreign activists on board the Sumud Flotilla. A large number of supporters and family members gathered at the airport to welcome him home. Video footage showed people showering him with flower petals and placing floral garlands around his neck as chants and cheers filled the arrival area. Many supporters were seen embracing him and expressing relief at his safe return. A day earlier, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Saad — grandson of late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi — had arrived safely in Istanbul along with other activists following what he described as “concerted efforts” by the authorities. Dar also thanked the Turkish government for facilitating Saad’s return and ensuring his safe passage to Istanbul. He described Israel’s treatment of humanitarian workers as “deeply condemnable and totally unacceptable” and reiterated Pakistan’s “unequivocal support” for the Palestinian people. On Thursday, the Foreign Office (FO) condemned Israel’s unlawful interception of the flotilla in international waters. In a statement, the FO confirmed that those detained included humanitarian activist Saad Edhi. Earlier on Monday, Israel’s foreign ministry posted on X that it “will not allow any breach of the lawful naval blockade on Gaza”. Reports of Saad’s detention by Israeli forces emerged on Monday after his father, Faisal Edhi, post a video on Edhi’s official Facebook handle. In the video, Faisal said that the “the Gaza aid flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces near Cyprus and its members have been arrested, including Saad Edhi”. Faisal had also appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take action following his son’s detention by Israeli forces. Later, Saad also issued a video statement from the flotilla. “I am Saad Edhi, a Pakistani citizen. If you are watching this video, it means that I have been intercepted or am being intercepted,” he said. He had described it as a “non-violent humanitarian aid mission” for Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla had set sail from Turkiye last week in the latest attempt by activists to breach Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian enclave, after Israeli forces intercepted a previous convoy last month. Earlier this week, Pakistan and nine other countries issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s interception of the flotilla. The joint statement was issued by the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Turkiye, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Jordan, Libya, Maldives, and Spain. Israel controls all entry points into Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007. Due to Gaza’s invasion by Israel, the territory has suffered severe shortages of food, medicine and other essential supplies, with Israel at times halting aid deliveries entirely.
